The performance of many Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading the performance of them. They can be a great source of extra damage, more AD or even more affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to the more modernized Common or Magic gear due to their higher requirements.

Armor


Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item they are attached to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of games and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at bonfires. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components in them using a specialist or more powerful salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will absorb. A piece of armor upgraded to the highest upgrade level will increase its damage absorption. However, it's important be aware that this upgrade will increase its weight, causing it to weigh more than it was before.

There are several types of armor upgrades available in the game and they all have different effects. Some upgrades give armor an extra amount of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade an item can be given, as illustrated below.

A few upgrades are magic or a mix of technology and magic which is identified by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Certain upgrades also require fees in order to be used. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are either updated daily or never expire based on the upgrade.

The cheapest method of upgrading armor is by using Iron Ore, which can be obtained through exploring the surroundings and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more costly, but is readily available in the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high level armor pieces. These upgrades can give players a significant increases in stats and are well worth the cost.

The process of upgrading an armor piece to its maximum upgrade level will significantly increase its defense capabilities, but the player should be aware that putting more weight on it will dramatically reduce its speed and agility. For this reason, it is not recommended to upgrade armor pieces that are higher than +9 since the defensive boost gained is usually not worth the additional weight and power cost of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades give players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. Upgrades can increase the accuracy of a rifle or the damage that shotgun shells cause. Certain firearms also have upgrades that enhance their inherent capabilities. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and decreases the chance of weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

The majority of upgrades for weapons require a whetblade. It's one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by completing Side Quests or killing a certain amount of bosses and monsters.

To increase their level faster, most players will prioritise upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their teammates utilize to increase their power. Shepard, for example should upgrade his M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more useful when used by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to improve the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in weapons and armor. Jewelry crafting is a method of creating them. You combine gemstones with specific reagents on a jewelry table. The higher the tier of the gem, the better its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses all over the world, or through salvaging Legendary Gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can improve the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. Based on item upgrades of the gem it will give different stat boosts when inserted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

The Jeweler can craft all tiers of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones that you must be at certain levels to gain. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped by a different identical jewel without destroying it. You can only replace the jewel once in an item of equipment.

It is common to use more gems to enhance the appearance of. Apart from improving performance, the jewels also create an area that is stronger than metal, so repeated friction from pivots doesn't damage them as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the look of your shields and weapons. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be freely swapped, but they are not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold and Scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as aegis and traits, cannot be swapped out, and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that offer a wide range of small but useful benefits to your hero. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and by doing road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player will be able to unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but valuable boost in speed of movement and evasion. The player can then acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be used in any kind of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets also provide additional buffs and skills that remain active when the hero is not fighting. This lets a hero become more efficient even when not in combat. It also helps compensate for the lack of a excellent team or talent tree slots which would normally be filled by a hero's top stats.

A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you will not replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is especially true when you are looking to upgrade multiple statistics on an item. It's more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat than two less important ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one prior to the start of the game. Mid and top players on the other hand they will select a pink or green ward, depending on the matchup. These choices will have a major impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.
