ADHD Assessments
There is no one test that can determine if a person is suffering from ADHD. Instead, experts employ different instruments to collect information and assess the signs of an individual.
These include standardized clinical interviewing and rating scales, observational ratings and a number of psychometric/neuropsychological tests (including intelligence testing). They are an integral element of the comprehensive evaluation process required to evaluate, screen, diagnose and monitor treatments.
Assessment Process
The majority of ADHD assessments involve a detailed interview between the evaluator and the person who is being evaluated. A clinical professional, such as a psychologist, doctor, or clinical social worker will conduct the test. The clinician will ask the patient about their past and current symptoms. A lot of evaluators employ standardized behavior ratings scales. These tests are based on research comparing behaviors of people with and without ADHD. They aren't diagnostic by themselves but they do provide objective information to the evaluation. The Vanderbilt Assessment Scale, the Teacher-Parent report form of the Behavior Assessment System for Children and the Vanderbilt Assessment Scale are all examples. Adults can be assessed using a standard ADHD rating scale, such as the Wender Utah Rating Scale. For both adults and children, the clinician will also employ a checklist for behavioral issues. This looks for other conditions that are often co-occurring with ADHD, such as conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder, depression or anxiety.
The evaluator also examines the person's current and past medications. In addition, the clinician will look over medical records and gather background details about the person's family and environment. For example, the evaluator will ask about whether the patient's parents or other relatives have ADHD and what their symptoms were like.
These tests can be extremely beneficial to the examiner, especially if the diagnosis is not clear. However these tests are not of much use as the sole instrument for determining an ADHD diagnosis due to problems in their sensitivity and specificity. They don't take into account the complexity of daily situations that adults face.
A more recent test called SPECT brain scanning can provide valuable information on how the brain functions for just a few minutes. The results are only useful for diagnosing certain types of brain injuries and diseases. They don't accurately reflect how the brain operates in everyday life like school, work and relationships.
It is best to consult an expert in mental health who has experience in the assessment and management of ADHD. The best method to locate the right person is to get a referral from the doctor, therapist or any other professional.
