Thanks to its strong representation capabilities, researchers are looking at ways to apply transformer to computer vision tasks. In a variety of visual benchmarks, transformer-based models perform similar to or better than other types of networks such as convolutional and recurrent neural networks. Given its high performance and less need for vision-specific inductive bias, transformer is receiving more and more attention from the computer vision community. In this paper, we review these vision transformer models by categorizing them in different tasks and analyzing their advantages and disadvantages. The main categories we explore include the backbone network, high/mid-level vision, low-level vision, and video processing. We also include efficient transformer methods for pushing transformer into real device-based applications. Furthermore, we also take a brief look at the self-attention mechanism in computer vision, as it is the base component in transformer. Toward the end of this paper, we discuss the challenges and provide several further research directions for vision transformers.Dysconnectivity of large-scale brain networks has been linked to major depression disorder (MDD) during resting state. Recent researches show that the temporal evolution of brain networks regulated by oscillations reveals novel mechanisms and neural characteristics of MDD. Our study applied a novel coupled tensor decomposition model to investigate the dysconnectivity networks characterized by spatio-temporal-spectral modes of covariation in MDD using resting electroencephalography. The phase lag index is used to calculate the functional connectivity within each time window at each frequency bin. Then, two adjacency tensors with the dimension of time × frequency × connectivity × subject are constructed for the healthy group and the major depression group. We assume that the two groups share the same features for group similarity and retain individual characteristics for group differences. Considering that the constructed tensors are nonnegative and the components in spectral and adjacency modes are partially consistent among the two groups, we formulate a double-coupled nonnegative tensor decomposition model. To reduce computational complexity, we introduce the low-rank approximation. Then, the fast hierarchical alternative least squares algorithm is applied for model optimization. After clustering analysis, we summarize four oscillatory networks characterizing the healthy group and four oscillatory networks characterizing the major depression group, respectively. The proposed model may reveal novel mechanisms of pathoconnectomics in MDD during rest, and it can be easily extended to other psychiatric disorders.
Although plane wave imaging (PWI) with multiple plane waves (PWs) steered at different angles enables ultrafast three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasonic imaging, there is still a challenging tradeoff between image quality and frame rate. To address this challenge, we recently proposed the aperiodic PWI (APWI) with mathematical analysis and simulation study. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of APWI and evaluate the performance with phantom and in vivo experiments.
APWI with a concentric ring angle pattern (APWI-C) and APWI with a sunflower pattern (APWI-S) are evaluated. For experimental verification of the methods, the experimental results are compared with simulation results in terms of the spatial resolution and the mainlobe-to-sidelobe ratio. In addition, the performance of APWI is compared with that of conventional PWI by using a commercial phantom. To examine the potential for clinical use of APWI, a gallstone phantom study and an in vivo carotid artery experiment are also conducted.
In the phantom study, the APWI methods provide a contrast ratio approximately 2-3 dB higher than that of PWI. In a gallstone experiment, the proposed methods yield 3-D rendered stone images more similar to the real stones than PWI. In the in vivo carotid artery images, APWI reduces the clutter artifacts inside the artery.
Phantom and in vivo studies show that the APWI enhances the contrast without compromising the spatial resolution and frame rate.
This study experimentally demonstrates the feasibility and advantage of APWI for ultrafast 3-D ultrasonic imaging.
This study experimentally demonstrates the feasibility and advantage of APWI for ultrafast 3-D ultrasonic imaging.COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, and within the following 2 months, most states had issued mandatory stay-at-home orders, leaving many patients without access to outpatient care. Similar to many other outpatient-based specialties, dermatology quickly adopted telemedicine into clinical practice, and this expansion of virtual communication provided (1) increased access for patients living in remote areas, (2) ease of multidisciplinary collaboration, and (3) new opportunities for training and education. This article highlights the caveats of teledermatology, such as the need for excellent visual diagnostic skills and the vulnerability of patient privacy and protected information. Additionally, as teledermatology is poised to further expand in the future, it is critical to reflect on patient safety as well as its clinical efficacy in comparison to in-person evaluation. We report the case of a 39-year-old woman who presented with generalized malaise; lymphadenopathy; arthritis; dactylitis; ecchymosis; acute onycholysis; and a red, nonpruritic, nonscaly, mottled rash on the right breast 24 hours after the first injections of ixekizumab for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Ixekizumab is a humanized IgG4 monoclonal antibody that binds to IL-17A. Adverse events of ixeki-zumab include infection, inflammatory bowel disease, candidiasis and tinea infections, severe injection-site reactions, arthralgia, headache, infections, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia. Other biologics, specifically tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, have been reported to cause onycholysis attributed to immune dysregulation. We propose that ixekizumab alters the inflammatory cascade that underlies the induction of acute onycholysis and arthritis. The physician's white coat seems to be under assault as changing trends lead to the adoption of the softshell jacket, fleece, and fitted scrubs. This article reviews literature on the history of the white coat and its role as the institutional garb of the medical doctor. It also examines the literature on patient perception of the white coat and greater impressions regarding the importance of physician attire.Autoimmune bullous dermatoses (ABDs), such as pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid (BP), cause cutaneous lesions that are painful and disfiguring. These conditions affect a patient's ability to perform everyday tasks, and individual lesions can take years to heal. Multiple small studies have examined how these conditions affect a patient's lifestyle. We systematically reviewed the trials that have evaluated the mental health of patients with bullous dermatoses. Of the 13 studies assessed, 2 domains of interest were primarily evaluated quality of life (QOL) and psychological state. Quality of life predominantly was analyzed using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). To evaluate psychological state, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) primarily was utilized. This review informs providers and summarizes the various ways that ABDs affect mental health.Herpes zoster (HZ) was suspected as a predictive cutaneous manifestation of COVID-19, with a debated prognostic significance. We report a series of 5 cases of HZ occurring after vaccination with a nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty, Pfizer-BioNTech). These new cases do not prove causality between COVID-19 vaccination and HZ. The pathophysiologic mechanism remains elusive, but local vaccine-induced immunomodulation may be involved. The occurrence of HZ does not justify avoiding the second injection of vaccine due to the benefit of vaccination.Individuals with chronic illnesses turn to online communities to engage in asynchronous peer-to-peer exchanges to better understand and manage their disease. Messages and advice exchanged by online users with vitiligo are not well characterized. We conducted a qualitative study to explore the content exchanged by individuals with vitiligo in online forums. An interpretive research paradigm was utilized to assess public online forum content. A systematic search using the phrases online forum vitiligo support, vitiligo online message board, and vitiligo forums identified 39 relevant forums; 9 of them met inclusion criteria, with 382 total anonymous users. Major themes and subthemes included vitiligo disease management, homeopathy/home remedies, psychosocial impact, public perceptions, and camouflage/concealment.There is now a growing trend for buccal fat pad reduction in patients who desire a decrease in midface and lower face volume, refinement, sculpting, or enhancement of facial features. The buccal fat pad is connected to the temporal fat, and therefore buccal fat pad reduction can result in volume depletion of the temporal fossae. In addition, most patients undergoing this procedure already have pre-existing temporal volume depletion due to aging. We describe a technique in which we remove part of the buccal fat pad and transfer the fat to the temple to achieve aesthetically pleasing facial contouring.Alopecia has been one of the more common concerns reported at teledermatology (TD) visits during the COVID-19 pandemic. In light of the growing use of TD, a team of experts were consulted to develop workflows for virtual hair and scalp examinations, with particular consideration for skin of color patients.Topical drugs are used to treat a variety of cutaneous and noncutaneous conditions. Direct application to the skin can result in adverse cutaneous effects, including allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). In part 2 of this series on topical medicament ACD, we focus on corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and anesthetics.Eligible for 1 MOC SA Credit From the ABD This Dermatopathology Diagnosis in our print edition is eligible for 1 self-assessment credit for Maintenance of Certification from the American Board of Dermatology (ABD). After completing this activity, diplomates can visit the ABD website (http//www.abderm.org) to self-report the credits under the activity title "Cutis Dermatopathology Diagnosis." You may report the credit after each activity is completed or after accumulating multiple credits.Dermatology remains the second least diverse specialty in medicine. This lack of diversity has important implications for the future of the specialty. This narrative review provides updated evidence on barriers at different stages of medical education training that impede academic advancement for underrepresented minority (URM) learners pursuing careers in dermatology.Jellies, more commonly known as jellyfish, are a common cause of stings in oceans throughout the world. Most stings result in immediate painful skin reactions that can be treated with hot water immersion and careful removal of adherent tentacles. DNA Repair inhibitor Rarely, certain jellyfish species can cause life-threatening systemic reactions that must be treated promptly and monitored in the acute care setting. Wearing a full-body stinger suit or applying a sting-inhibiting lotion are common strategies that may reduce the risk for jellyfish injuries. Avoidance of waters during jellyfish season is prudent in regions that harbor more dangerous species of jellyfish, particularly along the Australian and Indo-Pacific coastlines.
