Follow-up studies including a wider distribution of domestic mariners (deck hands, engineers) would further characterize occupational risks.
The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between mental health, effort-reward imbalance, intrinsic overcommitment and burnout in occupational groups that face mental stress.

Three hundred forty-six people aged 43.8 ± 9.9 years in professions characterized by mental strain (medical assistants, nurses, bank employees, teachers) were surveyed. The Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire, overcommitment, General Health Questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory were used.

There were occupational group-specific differences. Nurses showed the highest effort-reward imbalance, the highest impaired mental health and risk of burnout. selleck inhibitor The intrinsic overcommitment was highest among teachers. Gender and work experience had no influence, but there were some differences in age.

The occupational groups we studied experience stress differently. They would benefit from the establishment of general conditions to improve the management of stress in the workplace. The focus should be on improving mental health.

To examine the association between parental occupational exposure to traumatic events and their children's mental health in families of First Responders (FRs), a neglected area of research.

In 208 families of Israeli FRs, children's symptoms and comorbidity patterns of seven psychiatric disorders were regressed on parental work-related variables, controlling for relevant covariates.

Having a father working as a FR and higher paternal exposure were associated with a greater number of separation anxiety and posttraumatic stress symptoms, respectively. Maternal exposure was associated with a greater number of symptoms of generalized anxiety, panic disorder, depression, and oppositional defiant disorder, and with increased odds of comorbid internalizing symptomatology.

Additional research on children of FRs is encouraged. An adaption to this understudied population of family-centered interventions available for military families could inform targeted prevention efforts.

This paper examines the association of occupational injuries with work safety culture among Latinx child farmworkers.

Interviews were conducted in 2017 with 202 Latinx farmworkers aged 10 to 17 years.

Occupational injuries were common among the child farmworkers for example, 66.8% reported any work injury and 45.5% reported heat-related illness. Work safety culture was inadequate; for example, most did not receive safety training, one-third reported having worked piece-rate; only a few field sanitation services were available, and perceived work safety climate was low. Work safety culture had a mixed association with occupational injuries, with safety training and a better perceived work safety climate having a direct association with occupational injuries.

Policy is needed to reduce child farmworker injuries. Strategies to improve the predictive value of the work safety culture model are required.

We aimed to determine the effect of workplace violence on long-term sickness absence, and whether social support from supervisors and colleagues buffer this effect.

Information on workplace violence and social support were derived from the Danish Work Environment Cohort Study in 2000, 2005, and 2010 and the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health in 2006 and 2008. Individual- and joint-effects on register-based long-term sickness absence were determined using logistic regression models for repeated measurements. Cohort-specific estimates were combined in random effect meta-analyses.

Workplace violence and low social support were independently associated with a higher risk of long-term sickness absence, and we did not find evidence of an interaction.

Exposure to workplace violence is a risk factor for long-term sickness absence while social support is associated with a lower risk of long-term sickness absence.

Employers affect the health of employees and their families through work environments and employee benefits. We sought to understand employer decisions around those topics.

Interviews with 21 executives from diverse, purposely-sampled, progressive companies with transcripts analyzed using inductive and deductive methods.

Companies often viewed keeping employees healthy primarily as a means to profitability rather than an end in itself and rationalized stressful workplaces as necessary and non-changeable. Many possible actions including job redesign and changing benefits administrators were seen as infeasible. Even large, resource-rich organizations were strikingly non-agentic.

Companies seem less committed to the goal of increasing employee health than they claim or than they should be, given the significant relationship between employee health and economic performance, and see external and internal barriers to improving health that are often self-created.

To investigate the association of sickness absence with severe psychiatric outcomes in the workforce of a health institution.

This cross-sectional analysis included 16,890 employees from a health institution. The association of all-cause sick-leave spells and mental sick-leave spells with a composite outcome (psychiatric hospital admission and/or suicidality) was investigated with logistic regression, adjusted for age, sex, education, and job position.

There were 18,855 sick-leave spells among 6428 employees and 8.2% were mental sick-leaves. All-cause sick-leave was associated with the composite outcome (OR = 6.81; 95% CI = 2.99-15.52). This association was driven by mental-sick leave (OR = 100.52; 95% CI = 41.26-244.91), and the odds were higher among men.

Health promotion interventions on workers with mental sick-leave should be implemented to minimize the impact of mental disorders in this high-risk group.
