There are few reports on the causative microorganisms of bacterial enteritis in children in Japan in recent years. The distribution of causative microorganisms is important for estimating pathogens and making decisions regarding the treatment plan, as antimicrobial agents are not required for mild bacterial enteritis cases but are used for severe cases or immunocompromised patients.

We retrospectively surveyed pediatric patients who underwent stool culture at eight hospitals in the Kanto region of Japan from 2014 to 2019 for patient characteristics, causative microorganisms, and prescribed antimicrobial agents.

A total of 4,475 stool cultures were submitted, and the positivity rate for bacterial enteritis was 11%. The causative microorganisms were Campylobacter spp. in 338 cases (67.3%), Salmonella spp. in 85 cases (16.9%), enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157 in 23 cases (4.6%), and Yersinia spp. in 45 cases (9.0%). Hospitals with pediatric infectious disease physicians had a lower rate of antimicrobial therapy for Campylobacter enteritis than hospitals without pediatric infectious disease physicians.

We conducted this scoping review following the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute. see more We searched for MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL databases, and clinical trials in search engines such as clinicaltrials.gov and clinicaltrialsregister.eu. We included clinical trials in patients over 18 years of age diagnosed with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer who suffer treatment failure with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). Even those who have not received prior therapy. Those clinical trials also evaluated intravenous- or intravesical-administered immune checkpoint inhibitors and those associated with BCG.

High diversity of VP1 protein among enteroviruses has been a barrier in developing universally effective antiviral drugs. To maintain structure stability during evolution, several residues of VP1 protein of enteroviruses are conserved. Therefore, investigation of highly conserved residues in VP1 protein may provide information for antiviral drug candidates against enteroviruses.

To identify highly conserved amino acid sequences of the VP1 in enterovirus genus, the Consurf and CABS-flex 2.0 web software were applied. Through the combination with secondary structure information, we focused on conserved amino acids of VP1 property analysis.

Most conserved residues of VP1 were in the interior and interacted with VP2, VP3 and VP4 capsid proteins. Structure of EV-A71 (PDB code 4AED) showed conserved residues were at hydrophobic pocket and close to the junction between the loop and β-barrel. Interestingly, arginine was the most common conserved residue of VP1. Proline was the second most common conserved residue and was found in the loop and β-barrel intersection areas. VP1 protein flexibility was associated with the secondary structure. Conserved residues of VP1 in β-barrel showed significantly low flexibility.

This paper presents a new method, called Extended Inter-Spike Interval (EISI), on identifying the patients with a similar utilisation of mental health services and medications. The EISI measures the distance between the utilisation patterns of the patients. Then, the pairwise distances are given to a developed split-and-merge Partitioning Around Medoids (PAM) clustering algorithm to identify the patients with similar utilisation patterns. To evaluate the proposed method, we use two years (2013-2014) of the 10% publicly available sample of the Australian Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) administrative data. Results show that mental health patients can be grouped into ten clusters with distinct and interpretable utilisations patterns. The largest cluster comprises individuals who only visit general practitioners and take psycholeptics medications for a short time. The smallest group contains occasional visits with general practitioners and regularly utilises psycholeptics and psychoanaleptics medications over long periods. The proposed method provides insights on whom to target and how to structure services for different groups of individuals with mental health conditions.

This study aimed to assess colonic wall layers from both stenotic and non-stenotic complicated DD, bio-phenotypic alterations, inflammatory and oxidative status.

A systematic analysis of colonic specimens obtained from stenotic and non-stenotic DD specimens was conducted and compared with controls. Biological activity and qPCR analysis were performed on longitudinal and circular muscles. Western blot analysis was performed throughout colonic wall layers to quantify oxidative and inflammatory markers.

A homogenous increase in oxidative stress was observed through all the layers, which were more sharpened in the longitudinal muscle for a loss in antioxidant defenses. In both stenotic and non-stenotic colon, the longitudinal muscle presented an impaired relaxation and a cellular phenotypic switch driven by transforming growth factor-β with an increase in mRNA expression of collagen Iα and a decrease in myosin heavy chain. The circular muscle, as the mucosa, was less affected by molecular alterations. No peculiar increase in inflammatory markers was observed.

Subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue (SAT and VAT), as well as hepatic and pancreatic fat, were determined by magnetic resonance imaging. We assessed the associations between fat content and inflammatory biomarkers using multiple linear regression.

What are the trends and changes in patient demographics and practices in treatment with assisted reproductive technology (ART) in Turkey over 25 years?

Data on patient demographics, cycle characteristics and clinical outcome of 29,541 cycles in 22,867 women who underwent treatment with ART between 1996 and 2020 were analysed according to calendar years. Regression and interrupted time series analysis were used to assess changes in patient characteristics, trends and effects of interventions on outcome.

From 1996 to 2020, the average age of women undergoing treatment with ART increased from 32.1 to 36.0 years (r = 0.96), the proportion of women over 40 more than tripled (9% versus 28.7%; r = 0.97) and the average duration of infertility at presentation dropped from 8.4 to 4 years (r = -0.98) (P<0.0001, for all). Diminished ovarian reserve became the major indication by 2015. Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone antagonists dominated ovarian stimulation by 2009. The average number of oocytes retrieved decreased from 11.
