This paper investigated the incidence and risk of newly diagnosed glaucoma after the initiation of maintenance dialysis in Taiwan. A case-control study was conducted using the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. There were 3949 patients with dialysis in the study group and 78,980 non-dialysis subjects matched by age and sex in the comparison group. The incidence of newly diagnosed glaucoma after the initiation of maintenance dialysis was analyzed based on the diagnostic code for glaucoma. Patients with dialysis had a higher risk of glaucoma (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.270; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.035-1.560) than patients without dialysis. GLPG0634 chemical structure The incidence rate of glaucoma was 8.18 per 10,000 person months in the dialysis group, which was higher than that in the non-dialysis group (5.01 per 10,000 person months). Patients with dialysis exhibited a significantly higher risk of angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) (aHR 1.550; 95% CI 1.074-2.239). In contrast, there was no significant risk of developing open-angle glaucoma or normal-tension glaucoma in dialysis patients. Our data suggest that dialysis patients are more susceptible to ACG. Regular ophthalmic examinations may be useful in patients with dialysis to identify high-risk individuals with glaucoma, and preventive measures can be applied to avoid permanent vision loss as soon as intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation is identified.Amphisphaeriaceous taxa (fungi) are saprobes on decaying wood in terrestrial, mangrove, and freshwater habitats. The generic boundaries of the family have traditionally been based on morphology, and the delimitation of genera has always been challenging. Amphisphaeria species have clypeate ascomata and 1-septate ascospores and a coelomycetous asexual morph. Lepteutypa is different from Amphisphaeria in having eutypoid stromata and more than 1-septate ascospores. These main characters have been used for segregation of Lepteutypa from Amphisphaeria for a long time. However, the above characters are overlapping among Amphisphaeria and Lepteutypa species. Therefore, here we synonymized Lepteutypa under Amphisphaeria based on holomorphic morphology and multigene phylogeny. Further, our cluster analysis reveals the relationship between seven morphological traits among Amphisphaeria/Lepteutypa species and suggests those morphologies are not specific to either genus. Three new species (i.e., Amphisphaeria camelliae, A. curvaticonidia, and A. micheliae) are introduced based on morphology and LSU-ITS-RPB2-TUB2 phylogenies. Furthermore, the monotypic genus Trochilispora, which had been accepted in Amphisphaeriaceae, is revisited and synonymized under Hymenopleella and placed in Sporocadaceae.Healthcare workers are at an increased risk of contracting Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) represent the available tests most used for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Different borderline zones have been proposed for defining conversions and reversions to improve the interpretation of the IGRA test results as part of serial testing. From 2012 to 2017, 5468 health students of an Italian University Hospital were screened for tuberculosis infection through the execution of the TST and, in case of positivity, of the QuantiFERON-TB® Gold In-Tube assay (QFT-GIT). The QFT-GIT is considered "borderline" with values from 0.35 to 0.99 IU/mL. Among the students who performed the QFT-GIT assay, 27 subjects presented a range of values defined as borderline. The QFT-GIT was repeated after 90 days on 19 subjects with borderline values and showed a negativization of the values in 14 students and a positive conversion in three cases, while for two students, a borderline value was also found for the second test, with a 74% regression of the borderline cases. The introduction of QuantiFERON borderline values is a useful assessment tool to bring out LTBI case candidates for chemoprophylaxis.Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) have recently become the most attractive tools for the development of efficient hydroponic systems. Nevertheless, some inherent shortcomings such as signal drifts, secondary ion interferences, and effected high ionic strength make them difficult to apply in a hydroponic system. To minimize these deficiencies, we combined the multivariate standard addition (MSAM) sampling technique with the deep kernel learning (DKL) model for a six ISEs array to increase the prediction accuracy and precision of eight ions, including NO3-, NH4+, K+, Ca2+, Na+, Cl-, H2PO4-, and Mg2+. The enhanced data feature based on feature enrichment (FE) of the MSAM technique provided more useful information to DKL for improving the prediction reliability of the available ISE ions and enhanced the detection of unavailable ISE ions (phosphate and magnesium). The results showed that the combined MSAM-feature enrichment (FE)-DKL sensing structure for validating ten real hydroponic samples achieved low root mean square errors (RMSE) of 63.8, 8.3, 29.2, 18.5, 11.8, and 8.8 mg·L-1 with below 8% coefficients of variation (CVs) for predicting nitrate, ammonium, potassium, calcium, sodium, and chloride, respectively. Moreover, the prediction of phosphate and magnesium in the ranges of 5-275 mg·L-1 and 10-80 mg·L-1 had RMSEs of 29.6 and 8.7 mg·L-1 respectively. The results prove that the proposed approach can be applied successfully to improve the accuracy and feasibility of ISEs in a closed hydroponic system.Low-phosphorus (low-P) stress has a significant limiting effect on crop yield and quality. Although the molecular mechanisms of the transcriptional level responsible for the low-P stress response have been studied in detail, the underlying epigenetic mechanisms in gene regulation remain largely unknown. In this study, we evaluated the changes in DNA methylation, gene expression and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) abundance genome-wide in response to low-P stress in two representative soybean genotypes with different P-efficiencies. The DNA methylation levels were slightly higher under low-P stress in both genotypes. Integrative methylation and transcription analysis suggested a complex regulatory relationship between DNA methylation and gene expression that may be associated with the type, region, and extent of methylation. Association analysis of low-P-induced differential methylation and gene expression showed that transcriptional alterations of a small part of genes were associated with methylation changes. Dynamic methylation alterations in transposable element (TE) regions in the CHH methylation context correspond with changes in the amount of siRNA under low-P conditions, indicating an important role of siRNAs in modulating TE activity by guiding CHH methylation in TE regions. Together, these results could help to elucidate the epigenetic regulation mechanisms governing the responses of plants to abiotic stresses. In this work, we report the preparation of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based activated carbon nanofibers composited with different concentrations of reduced graphene oxide (rGO/ACNF) (1%, 5%, and 10% relative to PAN weight) by a simple electrospinning method. The electrospun nanofibers (NFs) were carbonized and physically activated to obtain activated carbon nanofibers (ACNFs). Texture, surface and elemental properties of the pristine ACNFs and composites were characterized using various techniques. In comparison to pristine ACNF, the incorporation of rGO led to changes in surface and textural characteristics such as specific surface area (SBET), total pore volume (Vtotal), and micropore volume (Vmicro) of 373 m2/g, 0.22 cm3/g, and 0.15 cm3/g, respectively, which is much higher than the pristine ACNFs (e.g., SBET = 139 m2/g). The structural and morphological properties of the pristine ACNFs and their composites were studied by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) respectively. Carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption on the pristine ACNFs and rGO/ACNF composites was evaluated at different pressures (5, 10, and 15 bars) based on static volumetric adsorption. At 15 bar, the composite with 10% of rGO (rGO/ACNF0.1) that had the highest SBET, Vtotal, and Vmicro, as confirmed with BET model, exhibited the highest CO2 uptake of 58 mmol/g. These results point out that both surface and texture have a strong influence on the performance of CO2 adsorption. Interestingly, at p less then 10 bar, the adsorption process of CO2 was found to be quite well fitted by pseudo-second order model (i.e., the chemisorption), whilst at 15 bar, physisorption prevailed, which was explained by the pseudo-first order model. The vigor of tea plants (Camellia sinensis) and tea quality are strongly influenced by the abundance and forms of nitrogen, principally NO3-, NH4+, and amino acids. Mechanisms to access different nitrogen sources and the regulatory cues remain largely elusive in tea plants. A transcriptome analysis was performed to categorize differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in roots and young leaves during the early response to four nitrogen treatments. Relative to the continuously nitrogen-replete control, the three nitrogen-deprived and resupplied treatments shared 237 DEGs in the shoots and 21 DEGs in the root. Gene-ontology characterization revealed that transcripts encoding genes predicted to participate in nitrogen uptake, assimilation, and translocation were among the most differentially expressed after exposure to the different nitrogen regimes. Because of its high transcript level regardless of nitrogen condition, a putative amino acid transporter, TEA020444/CsCAT9.1, was further characterized in Arabidopsis and found to mediate the acquisition of a broad spectrum of amino acids, suggesting a role in amino acid uptake, transport, and deposition in sinks as an internal reservoir. Our results enhance our understanding of nitrogen-regulated transcript level patterns in tea plants and pinpoint candidate genes that function in nitrogen transport and metabolism, allowing tea plants to adjust to variable nitrogen environments.Long-term memory formation requires coordinated regulation of gene expression and persistent changes in cell function. For decades, research has implicated histone modifications in regulating chromatin compaction necessary for experience-dependent changes to gene expression and cell function during memory formation. Recent evidence suggests that another epigenetic mechanism, ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling, works in concert with the histone-modifying enzymes to produce large-scale changes to chromatin structure. This review examines how histone-modifying enzymes and chromatin remodelers restructure chromatin to facilitate memory formation. We highlight the emerging evidence implicating ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling as an essential mechanism that mediates activity-dependent gene expression, plasticity, and cell function in developing and adult brains. Finally, we discuss how studies that target chromatin remodelers have expanded our understanding of the role that these complexes play in substance use disorders.Wood and lignocellulosic-based material components are explored in this review as functional additives and reinforcements in composites for extrusion-based additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing. The motivation for using these sustainable alternatives in 3D printing includes enhancing material properties of the resulting printed parts, while providing a green alternative to carbon or glass filled polymer matrices, all at reduced material costs. Previous review articles on this topic have focused only on introducing the use of natural fillers with material extrusion AM and discussion of their subsequent material properties. This review not only discusses the present state of materials extrusion AM using natural filler-based composites but will also fill in the knowledge gap regarding state-of-the-art applications of these materials. Emphasis will also be placed on addressing the challenges associated with 3D printing using these materials, including use with large-scale manufacturing, while providing insight to overcome these issues in the future.
