These CP NPs PIS are also used to synthesize nano-hydrogels with a relatively narrow and controlled size distribution in the absence of surfactants. It is proposed that polymerization is initiated at the CP NPs surface by photogenerated free polarons, in close analogy to the mechanism previously described for PIS based on inorganic semiconductor NPs. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. However, the interplay of targeted agents, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy is complex. An improved understanding of the effect of chemotherapy or radiotherapy on specific molecular pathways in immune cells would help to optimize the synergistic antitumor efficiency. In this study, the selenium-containing nanoparticles (NPs) could deliver the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) to tumor sites by systemic administration. Radiation stimuli facilitate DOX release and enhance chemotherapy efficiency. Moreover, radiation could oxidize diselenide-containing NPs to seleninic acid, which have both synergistic antitumor effect and immunomodulatory activity through enhancing NK cells function. These results indicate that the selenium-containing NPs would be a potential approach to achieve simultaneous treatments of immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy by a simple but effective method. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Adverse effects of inhaled environmental aerosols and pharmacological efficacy of inhaled therapeutics are dependent on aerosol properties as well as person-specific respiratory tract anatomy and physiology. Anatomical geometry and physiological function of human airways depend on age, gender, weight, fitness, health, and disease status. Tools for the generation of the population- and subject-specific virtual airway anatomical geometry based on anthropometric data and physiological vitals are invaluable in respiratory diagnostics, personalized pulmonary pharmacology, and model-based management of chronic respiratory diseases. Here we present a novel protocol and software framework for the generation of subject-specific airways based on anthropometric measurements of the subject's body, using the anatomical input, and the conventional spirometry, providing the functional (physiological) data. MF-438 This model can be used for subject-specific simulations of respiration physiology, gas exchange, and aerosol inhalation and deposition. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.A number of synapse devices have been intensively studied for the neuromorphic system which is the next-generation energy-efficient computing method. Among these various types of synapse devices, photonic synapse devices recently attracted significant attention. In particular, the photonic synapse devices using persistent photoconductivity (PPC) phenomena in oxide semiconductors are receiving much attention due to the similarity between relaxation characteristics of PPC phenomena and Ca2+ dynamics of biological synapses. However, these devices have limitations in its controllability of the relaxation characteristics of PPC behaviors. To utilize the oxide semiconductor as photonic synapse devices, relaxation behavior needs to be accurately controlled. In this study, a photonic synapse device with controlled relaxation characteristics by using an oxide semiconductor and a ferroelectric layer is demonstrated. This device exploits the PPC characteristics to demonstrate synaptic functions including short-term plasticity, paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), and long-term plasticity (LTP). The relaxation properties are controlled by the polarization of the ferroelectric layer, and this polarization is used to control the amount by which the conductance levels increase during PPF operation and to enhance LTP characteristics. This study provides an important step toward the development of photonic synapses with tunable synaptic functions. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Here, the mechanochemical route is proposed to prepare nitrogen doped γ-graphyne (NGY) and its high capacity is demonstrated in lithium (LIBs)/sodium (SIBs) ion batteries. The sample delivers large reversible Li (1037 mAh g-1 ) and Na (570.4 mAh g-1 ) storage capacities at 100 mA g-1 and presents excellent rate capabilities (526 mAh g-1 for LIBs and 180.2 mAh g-1 for SIBs) at 5 A g-1 . The superior Li/Na storage mechanisms of NGY are revealed by its 2D morphology evolution, quantitative kinetics, and theoretical calculations. The effects on the diffusion barriers (Eb ) and adsorption energies (Ead ) of Li/Na atoms in NGY are also studied and imine-N is demonstrated to be the ideal doping format to enhance the Li/Na storage performance. Besides, the Li/Na adsorption routes in NGY are optimized according to the experimental and the first-principles calculation results. This work provides a facile way to fabricate high capacity electrodes in LIBs/SIBs, which is also instructive for the design of other heteroatomic doped electrodes. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Novel molecular markers based on the alterations in gene expression and the molecular pathways activated or deactivated during melanoma progression are needed for predicting the course of the disease already in primary tumors and for providing new targets for therapy. Here, we sought to identify genes whose expression in primary melanomas correlate with patient disease-specific survival using global gene expression profiling. Many of the identified potential markers of poor prognosis were associated with the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, extracellular matrix formation, and angiogenesis. We studied further the significance of one of the genes, prolyl 4-hydroxylase subunit alpha 1 (P4HA1), in melanoma progression. P4HA1 depletion in melanoma cells reduced cell adhesion, invasion, and viability in vitro. In melanoma xenograft assays, we found that P4HA1 knockdown reduced melanoma tumor invasion as well as the deposition of collagens, particularly type IV collagen, in the interstitial extracellular matrix and in the basement membranes of tumor blood vessels, leading to vessel wall rupture and hemorrhages. Further, P4HA1 knockdown reduced the secretion of collagen triple helix repeat containing 1 (CTHRC1), an important mediator of melanoma cell migration and invasion, in vitro and its deposition around tumor blood vessels in vivo. Taken together, P4HA1 is an interesting potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target in primary melanomas, influencing many aspects of melanoma tumor progression. © 2020 The Authors. The higher sensitivity of these methods, compared with their achiral counterparts, not only enables the determination of absolute configuration and conformational preferences, but also supramolecular interactions may be monitored. In order to expand the applicability of chiroptical systems, the development of functional materials exhibiting intense chiroptical responses is essential. As a proof of principle, we previously constructed chiroptical interfaces via thioacetate-derivatized allenes. Because of the photoisomerization issues associated with allenes, we have recently proposed their replacement by spirobifluorenes to achieve robust chiroptical systems. Thus, we hereby present the design and synthesis of chiral spirobifluorenes bearing thioacetates suitable for suface functionalization. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Nanocatalytic medicine has been developed recently to trigger intratumoral generation of highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) for cancer therapy, which, unfortunately, suffers from compromised therapeutic efficacy due to a self-protective mechanism, autophagy, of cancer cells to mitigate oxidative damage. In this work, during the efforts of ROS generation by nanocatalytic medicine, a pharmacological autophagy inhibition strategy is implemented for augmenting ROS-induced oxidative damage for synergetic cancer therapy. An iron-containing metal-organic framework [MOF(Fe)] nanocatalyst as a peroxidase mimic is used to catalyze the generation of highly oxidizing •OH radicals specifically within cancer cells, while chloroquine is applied to deacidify lysosomes and inhibit autophagy, cutting off the self-protection pathway under severe oxidative stress. Cancer cells fail to extract their components to detoxicate and strengthen themselves, finally succumbing to the ROS-induced oxidative damage during nanocatalytic therapy. Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate the synergy between nanocatalytic therapy and autophagy inhibition, suggesting that such a combined strategy is applicable to amplify tumor-specific oxidative damage and may be informative to future design of therapeutic regimen. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Do changes in the level of angiogenesis related mediators (VEGF-A, TSP-1 and NF-Κb) in sciatic nerve mediate diabetic neuropathy in the Streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetic male rat? Can exercise and IGF-I treatment improve diabetes related-decreased angiogenesis in the sciatic nerve of Streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetic male rat? What is the main finding and it's important? VEGF-A, TSP-1 and NF-Κb levels change in the sciatic nerve of diabetic rats and may mediate diabetic neuropathy. Treatment with IGF-I and exercise could increase angiogenesis in the diabetic rats by increasing VEGF-A as well as decreasing TSP-1 and NF-Κb expression in the sciatic nerve. However, combination therapy didn't show any additive effect on angiogenesis or VEGF-A, TSP-1 and NF-Κb levels in the sciatic nerve of the diabetic rats compared with eachtreatmrnt alone. ABSTRACT Background Diabetic neuropathy is a severe complication of diabetes , affecting 40-50% of diabetic TSP-1 and NF-Ƙb levels in the sciatic nerve compared to the control group, whereas these effects were reversed by exercise and IGF-1. However, simultaneous treatment of diabetic rats with IGF-I and exercise did not have any synergistic effects. Conclusions These findings indicate that diabetes-induced neuropathy may in part be associated with decreased angiogenesis mediated by overproduction of TSP-1 and NF-Ƙb, as well as reduced production of VEGF-A proteins. The findings also showed that exercise and IGF-I can reduce neuropathy followed by increased angiogenesis by change of TSP-1, NF-Ƙb and VEGF-A production levels.
