Herein, we developed a fluorescent aptasensor based on carbon quatum dots (CQDs) derived from shaddock peel green synthesis for rapid detection of E2 as a useful auxiliary tool of forensic examination. The CQDs conjugated to the aptamer achieved fluorometric detection of E2 in blood and the blood of healthy female from 12 to 60 years old could be sensitive detected with the limit of detection of 0.025 ng/ml, and the analytical process could be completed within 10 min. The aptasensor was also used to assay E2 in forensic samples including blood and blood stain. In all instances, the results were positive when mixed samples involving female sample. This fluorescent aptasensor was proved to be a green, rapid and sensitive detection method of E2, and it exhibited great potential in discrimination of female samples in forensic practice.Lower N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) GluN1 subunit levels and heightened neuroinflammation are found in the cortex in schizophrenia. Since neuroinflammation can lead to changes in NMDAR function, it is possible that these observations are linked in schizophrenia. We aimed to extend our previous studies by measuring molecular indices of NMDARs that define key functional properties of this receptor - particularly the ratio of GluN2A and GluN2B subunits - in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) from schizophrenia and control cases (37/37). We sought to test whether changes in these measures are specific to the subset of schizophrenia cases with high levels of inflammation-related mRNAs, defined as a high inflammatory subgroup. Quantitative autoradiography was used to detect 'functional' NMDARs ([3H]MK-801), GluN1-coupled-GluN2A subunits ([3H]CGP-39653), and GluN1-coupled-GluN2B subunits ([3H]Ifenprodil). Quantitative RT-PCR was used to measure NMDAR subunit transcripts (GRIN1, GRIN2A and GRIN2B). The ratios of GluN2AGluN2B binding and GRIN2AGRIN2B mRNAs were calculated as an index of putative NMDAR composition. We found 1) GluN2A binding, and 2) the ratios of GluN2AGluN2B binding and GRIN2AGRIN2B mRNAs were lower in schizophrenia cases versus controls (p less then 0.05), and 3) lower GluN2AGluN2B binding and GRIN2AGRIN2B mRNA ratios were exaggerated in the high inflammation/schizophrenia subgroup compared to the low inflammation/control subgroup (p less then 0.05). No other NMDAR-related indices were significantly changed in the high inflammation/schizophrenia subgroup. This suggests that neuroinflammation may alter NMDAR stoichiometry rather than targeting total NMDAR levels overall, and future studies could aim to determine if anti-inflammatory treatment can alleviate this aspect of NMDAR-related pathology.
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) may increase the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. The study aimed to estimate the proportion and associated factors of MetS among individuals (≥15 years) across three cross-sectional surveys in 2009, 2013 and 2019 in Mongolia.

Cross-sectional data were analysed from 6,321 individuals (15-64/69 years, median age=42 years) that participated in the 2009, 2013 or 2019 Mongolia STEPS surveys, and had complete MetS (harmonized definition) measurements.

Almost two in five participants (35.6%) had MetS, 33.3% in 2009, 35.3% in 2013, ad 37.0% in 2019 (p-for trend 0.023). In adjusted logistic regression analyses, older age was associated with MetS in 2009 and in 2019, male sex and higher education were associated with MetS in 2013, and urban residence was associated with MetS in 2009. Current tobacco use was associated with MetS in 2009 and 2019, moderate or high physical activity was protective against MetS in 2013 and 2019, while general overweight and obesity increased the odds of MetS in 2009, 2013, and 2019.

Naringenin (NAR), a bitter and colorless flavanone ubiquitous in herbs and fruits, has been shown to inhibit QS activity in P. aeruginosa by decreasing the production of pyocyanin and elastase. In this study, to evaluate the anti-QS activity of naringenin against an E. coli Top 10 biosensor, we developed a novel core-corona nanocapsule formulation comprising surface co-adsorbed β-cyclodextrin (Captisol®) and chitosan loaded with NAR. The results showed that both the nanocapsule (NC) and nanoemulsion (NE) formulations, NAR payload associated with high efficiency , namely ~ 92.88 and ~ 67.98%, respectively. These formulations remained stable for 24 h and showed a biphasic controlled release profile in bacterial M9 medium. Captisol® was effectively immobilized on the NC's surface, resulting in a surface charge inversion from positive (~ + 42 mV) to negative (~ -32 mV) ζ-potential. The biosensor assay revealed that NC outperformed NE in quenching the QS response and the incorporation of naringenin at the NC's multifunctional surface enhanced this bioactivity. Cytotoxicity assays showed that when NAR was associated in NC (188 µM) it was not cytotoxic to Caco2 cells, by contrast with its free form, thus highlighting the cytoprotective effect of the developed formulation. Biofilm formation was inhibited up to ~ 60% in NAR-loaded NC (188 μM), indicating the synergistic effect of positively charged chitosan with the bioactivity of NAR while harnessing the NC's high surface area-to-volume ratio.Photothermal therapy (PTT) induced by near-infrared (NIR) laser has attracted much attention for the innovation of tumor therapy, in which the photothermal agent with good biocompatibility and high efficiency is the prerequisite. Herein, the biocompatible bovine serum albumin (BSA) coated Ag2S nanoparticles (NPs) as photothermal agent were synthesized directly at mild temperature for PTT of cancer. The high photothermal conversion efficiency of the obtained Ag2S NPs with strong NIR absorption is about 18.89%, which make them ideal materials for photothermal agents. Furthermore, the Ag2S NPs can induce effective apoptosis of tumor cells exposed to an NIR laser (808 nm), realizing an effective PTT with excellent killing effect of tumor cells. This work provides a simple reproducible method to fabricate the water-soluble and biocompatible Ag2S NPs, which would provide new insights of designing new functional NPs for the PTT therapy of tumor.The decreasing effectiveness of conventional drugs due to multidrug-resistance is a major challenge for the scientific community, necessitating development of novel antimicrobial agents. Phosphorylated polymer and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized and characterized by NMR, FT-IR, TEM, and DLS instruments. The synthetic polymer, MNPs, and biopolymer were mixed then freeze-dried to prepare a porous scaffold. Physiochemical assessments showed that a scaffold with well-developed porous morphology, and stable structure was obtained. In the present study, palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) were synthesized and were successfully coated with trimethyl-chitosan (TMC) to improve their biocompatibility. Coating with TMC improved the nanoparticle accumulation in MDAMB231 breast cancer cells, compared to nanoparticles coated with native chitosan. The TMC coated palladium nanoparticles (TMC/PdNPs) exhibited good biocompatibility and physiological stability, as compared to the plain(uncoated) PdNPs. TMC coated PdNPs resulted in photothermal therapeutic effect, when irradiated with a near-infrared (NIR) laser having the wavelength of 808-nm. The TMC/PdNPs resulted in good cytotoxic effect upon laser treatment in both, 2D monolayers and 3D spheroids of MDAMB231 cells, the latter mimicking the tumor microenvironment. These results clearly indicated that TMC/PdNPs acted as ideal photothermal agents for anti-cancer therapy in combination with a non-invasive near-infrared laser.
