Emerging research suggests mindfulness may reduce stress and asthma symptoms in children, yet there is a gap in understanding parental views towards learning about mindfulness.
This study aimed to compare the perceived acceptance to learn about mindfulness among parents of children with and without asthma, and to understand differences across income levels.
This was a national, cross-sectional, online survey of parents of children 0-18 years. Acceptance was measured with questions on whether parents believe mindfulness could be beneficial while parenting, and if they would be willing to learn about mindfulness. Comparisons of mindfulness acceptance between income level were conducted using chi-square and Fisher's exact test.
Parents of children with asthma were more likely to be interested in learning about mindfulness from their health care provider compared to those without asthma (46% vs. 38%,
< 0.0001). At all income levels examined in the study, parents (63-75%) of children with asthma indicated that they agreed or strongly agreed that mindfulness can be beneficial when parenting.
Findings suggest an opportunity to incorporate mindfulness teaching into asthma care for pediatric patients of all income levels.
Findings suggest an opportunity to incorporate mindfulness teaching into asthma care for pediatric patients of all income levels. The present study surveys potential antibacterial synergism effects of silver nitrate with eight other metal or metalloid-based antimicrobials (MBAs), including silver nitrate, copper (II) sulfate, gallium (III) nitrate, nickel sulfate, hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) trihydrate (gold), aluminum sulfate, sodium selenite, potassium tellurite, and zinc sulfate. Bacteriostatic and bactericidal susceptibility testing explored antibacterial synergism potency of 5760 combinations of MBAs against three bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus) in three different media. Silver nitrate in combination with potassium tellurite, zinc sulfate, and tetrachloroaurate trihydrate had remarkable bactericidal and bacteriostatic synergism effects. Synergism properties of MBAs decreased effective antibacterial concentrations remarkably and bacterial cell count decreased by 8.72 log10 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL in E. coli, 9.8 log10 CFU/mL in S. aureus, and 12.3 log10 CFU/mL in P. aeruginosa, compared to each MBA alone. Furthermore, most of the MBA combinations inhibited the recovery of bacteria; for instance, the combination of silver nitrate-tetrachloroaurate against P. aeruginosa inhibited the recovery of bacteria, while three-fold higher concentration of silver nitrate and two-fold higher concentration of tetrachloroaurate were required for inhibition of recovery when used individually. Overall, higher synergism was typically obtained in simulated wound fluid (SWF) rather than laboratory media. MPP antagonist nmr Unexpectedly, the combination of A silver nitrate-potassium tellurite had antagonistic bacteriostatic effects in Luria broth (LB) media for all three strains, while the combination of silver nitrate-potassium tellurite had the highest bacteriostatic and bactericidal synergism in SWF. Here, we identify the most effective antibacterial MBAs formulated against each of the Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogen indicator strains. The search for an ocular drug delivery system that could provide long-acting effects without a detriment to the anatomy and physiology of the eye remains a challenge. Polyphenolic compounds (curcumin in particular) have recently gained popularity due to their powerful antioxidant properties; yet curcumin suffers poor stability and water solubility. A conventional eye drop formulation of curcumin in the form of a suspension is likely to suffer a short duration of action requiring multiple instillations. On the other hand, polymeric in-situ gelling inserts offer the prospect of overcoming these limitations. The aim of this study was to prepare, characterize and evaluate in vivo, polymeric, in-situ gelling and mucoadhesive inserts for ocular surface delivery of curcumin. Different types and ratios of biocompatible polymers (HPMC, CMC, PL 127 and PVA) and three plasticizers along with the solvent casting method were adopted to prepare curcumin inserts. The inserts were investigated for their physicochemical characteristics, applicability, and suitability of use for potential placement on the ocular surface. The prepared inserts revealed that curcumin was mainly dispersed in the molecular form. Insert surfaces remained smooth and uniform without cracks appearing during preparation and thereafter. Improved mechanical and mucoadhesive properties, enhanced in vitro release (7.5- to 9-fold increases in RRT300 min) and transcorneal permeation (5.4- to 8.86-fold increases in Papp) of curcumin was achieved by selected in-situ gelling inserts compared to a control curcumin suspension. The developed inserts demonstrated acceptable ocular tolerability, enhanced corneal permeability, and sustained release of curcumin along with retention of insert formulation F7 on the ocular surface for at least two-hours. This insert provides a viable alternative to conventional eye drop formulations of curcumin.Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic joint disease that is characterized by joint pain and stiffness, and limitation of motion and the major cause of disability, which reduces life quality of patients and brings a large economic burden to the family and society. Current clinical treatment is mostly limited to symptomatic treatment aimed at pain alleviation and functional improvement, rather than suppressing the progression of OA. Nanotechnology is a promising strategy for the treatment of OA. In this review, we summarize the current experimental progress that focuses on technologies such as liposomes, micelles, dendrimers, polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs), exosomes, and inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) for their potential treatment of OA.
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) can affect the development of the maxilla; which may create a midfacial deficiency as well as an interference of the facial growth pattern and dentofacial esthetics.
This study aimed to estimate the chronological age of complete fusion of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis (SOS) in cleft lip and palate patients and a control group; using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.
In this retrospective study; 125 patients were enrolled (cleft lip and palate group (
= 91); control group (
= 34)). Age comparison was made with a chi-square test; and a Kaplan-Meier analysis determined the median time to reach complete fusion of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis (
<0.05).
The experimental group showed statistically significant differences in the median time for complete ossification between males and females (
= 0.019). The median time for complete ossification of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis was; for males; 15.0 years in both groups; for females; it was 14.0 years and 13.
