The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary Bacillus subtilis supplementation on growth performance, jejunal lesion scores, oocyst shedding, and cytokine and tight junction protein expression in broiler chickens infected with Eimeria maxima. A total of 196 male day-old Ross 708 broilers were given a nonexperimental diet until 14 D of age. Then, all chickens were randomly assigned to one of seven dietary treatments 2 basal diets (CON and NC); CON + virginiamycin (AB1); CON + bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD; AB2); CON + B. subtilis 1781 (PB1); CON + B. subtilis 747 (PB2); or CON + B. subtilis 1781 + 747 (PB3). At day 21, all chickens except those in the CON group were orally inoculated with E. maxima oocysts. At 7 D after E. maxima infection, the body weight gains of chickens fed PB2 and PB3 increased (P = 0.032) as much as those in chickens fed AB2. The body weight gain and feed efficiency of chickens fed PB2 were significantly increased (P less then 0.001), and PB2 chickens nd have the potential to replace antibiotic growth promoters. Improving the digestive efficiency of birds is becoming increasingly important with the diversification of feedstuffs used in poultry diets. Compared with time-consuming chemical analyses that were previously used to measure digestive efficiency, near-infrared spectroscopy has been a great advance as it was fast and thus allowed measurements to be taken from a large number of animals, as required for genetic studies. However, it still implies to rear the birds in cages to collect feces, which is questionable in terms of welfare. The purpose of this study was thus to establish whether the serum color could be used as a biomarker of digestive efficiency that would be easy and fast to measure on floor-reared animals. We first compared the serum color of 2 lines of chickens divergently selected for high or low digestive efficiency when fed with a wheat-based diet. Digestive efficiency was assessed by nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy. Color was assessed by the absorbance of the serum between 300 and 572 nm. Color differed between the 2 lines between 430 and 572 nm, which corresponds to the absorption zone of carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin. In a second step, we estimated the heritability of serum color measurements and their genetic correlations with digestive efficiency. Taking these parameters into account, in our experimental conditions the best trait among those tested that can be used as a biomarker of digestive efficiency is serum absorbance at 492 nm, with a heritability estimate of 0.31 ± 0.09 and a genetic correlation with digestive efficiency of 0.84 ± 0.28. Although a number of welfare assessment methods have been developed for poultry, none have been evaluated for use in commercial duck farms. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the inter-rater reliability and relative accuracy of 4 duck welfare assessment strategies. Over 2 experiments, 12 flocks of commercial meat ducks (5,850 to 6,300 ducks/flock) aged 30 to 34 D were evaluated. During experiment 1, six flocks were evaluated using 2 welfare assessment methods transect walks (TW) and catch-and-inspect (CAI). The aim of the study was to compare P33 (Polish Pekin), P8 (Danish Pekin), and LsA (English Pekin) ducks after 2 reproductive seasons for carcass composition and some meat quality traits. The genotype of the birds had a significant effect on the water and fat content in the pectoral and leg muscles, as well as protein and collagen in the leg muscles. The origin of the ducks had a significant impact on the magnesium content in pectoral muscles and Warner-Bratzler shear force pectoralis muscle major, as well as the electrical conductivity of the leg muscles. The differences in duck genotype had a significant effect on the sum of elastic moduli, fiber cross-sectional area, fiber perimeter, and vertical fiber diameter of pectoralis major muscle. Pearson correlation coefficients indicated that IMF content had significant negative correlations with moisture content but not with pH (r = -0.066), shear force (r = -0.072), WHC (r = 0.085), or color (L*(r = -0.049), a*(r = -0.028) and b*(r = 0.045)). Besides, meat pH had significant negative correlations with WHC (r = -0.036; P less then 0.01) and lightness (L*) (r = -0.292; P less then 0.01). Consequently, we consider pH to be one of the most important factors in evaluating meat quality of partridge. The aim of this study was to evaluate the fatty acid profile and health lipid indices of meat from 3 Polish local goose varieties (Romanian-RO, Pomeranian-PO, and Subcarpathian-SB) and the commercial cross White Kołuda goose (W31). Birds were fed ad libitum with the same complete feeds until 17 wk of age. The geese (n = 72) with body weight close to the arithmetic mean in particular flock were fasted for 12 h and slaughtered in an experimental slaughterhouse (18 females in each flock). Carcasses were stored at 2 to 4°C for 24 h. The breast muscles (m. pectoralis major) were cut out from the left side of carcass, separately vacuum-packed, and stored at -80°C until analysis. Fatty acid profile of meat was determined by gas chromatography and health lipid indices were calculated. The W31 muscles had a higher percentage of C 180 and a lower of C 160 than those of RO, PO, and SB geese. The W31 muscles were characterized by a significantly higher proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids (46.5%) than remaining ones (43.28%-PO, 43.38%-SB, and 44.24%-RO). The lowest proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids was established for W31 muscles (22.05%). The breast muscles of RO, SB, and PO had more favorable polyunsaturated n-6 and n-3 fatty acid (PUFA)/ saturated fatty acid (SFA) ratio (0.85, 0.82, 0.83, respectively) than W31 geese (0.72). The current findings showed that UFA/SFA, PUFA/SFA, and PUFA n-6/n-3 ratios in RO and SB muscles were within the optimum values for human diets. No significant differences were observed in the atherogenic, thrombogenic, and hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic indices between the analyzed muscles. Commercial W31 geese breast muscles showed a lower value (43.90%) of peroxidizability index (PI) compared to SB (52.88%), PO (53.93%), and RO (53.47%). However, the higher values of the PUFA/SFA and PI in the meat of SB, PO, and RO birds may indicate a higher prohealth value of their meat. The sperm storage tubules located in the mucosal folds of the uterovaginal junction (UVJ) are the primary site of sperm storage in chicken hens after natural mating or artificial insemination (AI). The short-term sperm storage (24 h after mating or AI) in hens was highly associated with immunity and pH-related pathway genes. However, the underlying mechanism of longer duration of sperm storage in female birds remains largely unclear. In the present study, transcriptome analysis was applied to uncover the dynamic gene expression changes in chicken UVJ tissues at two time points (day 3 and day 9) after AI. A total of 574 differentially expressed genes (DEG) were enriched, including 266 upregulated and 308 downregulated DEG. The validation of 5 DEG using quantitative PCR showed a similar expression tendency with RNA sequencing results. The gene ontology terms of DEG were highly enriched in heparin binding (9 genes including COMP, CTGF, and IMPG2), glycosaminoglycan binding (10 genes including PCOLCE, POSTN, and sperm maintenance in avian females and eventually improving the duration of fertile egg performance by selected chicken breeding. Owing to the practical interest in understanding duration of fertility (DF) to reduce the cost of producing hatching eggs by decreasing the frequency of artificial insemination, as well to uncover the mechanism of the estrogen-gut microbiome axis, elucidating the interaction between the maternal microbiome and the function of sperm storage tubules (SST) has become important for revealing the DF in laying hens. In this study, we investigated the compositional, structural, and functional differences in gut microbiomes between hens with high (HSST, n = 8) and low SST activity (LSST, n = 10) by performing phenotypic selection from approximately 400 individual hens based on their DFs. Their cecal microbial communities were analyzed by sequencing the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. The microbiome abundance estimators from the ceca of HSST and LSST hens were not significantly different at the phylum and genus taxonomic levels, although the relative abundances for the phylum Firmicutes and the genus Lactobacillus were higher in the HSST group. Furthermore, some taxonomic levels of bacteria expressing the components of several metabolic pathways differed between the HSST and LSST groups. Moreover, predicting functional microbiomes by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) revealed that certain pathways, such as the metabolism of carbohydrates and protein, cellular processes, and organismal systems, of the HSST group exhibited higher expression of genes associated with bioactivity and energy biosynthesis than those in the LSST group. Our results may provide insights into hen-microbe interactions with respect to DF and will be useful in establishing a strategy for new research to uncover the functional regulation of SST in laying hens.
