Acne vulgaris is the most common dermatoses affecting adolescents with significant impact on their quality of life (QoL). The current study aimed to estimate the prevalence of acne, severity, and its impact on QoL and self-esteem among Egyptian adolescents.
A cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 787 students were selected using multistage stratified random sampling from 12 secondary schools in Alexandria, Egypt. Data was collected using aself-reported questionnaire, and clinical examination was performed. Severity of acne and its impact on QoL and self-esteem were assessed using theGlobal Acne Grading System (GAGS), Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI), and Coopersmith self-esteem scale, respectively.
Prevalence of self-reported acne was 34.7%. Females significantlyreported acne more frequently than males (39.1% vs. 30.3%, p = 0.009). Prevalence of clinically confirmed acne was 24.4%, with higher rates among females (28.6%) than males (20.2%, p = 0.006). The majority of students had mild acne (75.5%). CADI showed that 11.4% had severe disability. A significant medium positive correlation between GAGS and CADI was found (r = 0.338, p < 0.01). Among acne group, low self-esteem was more prevalent among females (67.0%) than males (45.0%, p = 0.004).
Acne is a common problem among Egyptian school-aged adolescents with higher prevalence and impact in females. Our findings should alert health professionals and school authorities to timely identify, manage, and educate adolescents with acne.

The resultant Fe3O4MWCNTs@copolymer was proposed as QuEChERS adsorbent for determination of 15 mycotoxins and 25 pesticides in grains via liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The adsorbent was characterized by a transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, elemental analysis, and other techniques. The common matrix interferences were efficiently removed by the proposed adsorbent, such as pigment, fatty acids, and the saccharide. PAGA segment played an important role in removing the hydrophilic interferences through hydrogen bonding due to the high density of hydroxyl groups. PtBMA segment removed the fatty residues through its strong hydrophobic carbon moiety. In comparison with the commercially available QuEChERS adsorbents, the proposed adsorbent had higher adsorption capacities towards the typical matrix interferences. To achieve satisfactory recoveries of analytes, various parameters in the QuEChERS procedure were comprehensively investigated. Under the optimal conditions, 95.0% of the analytes showed satisfactory recoveries in the range 70.0-120% as well as negligible matrix effects. The limits of detection (LOD) were in the range 0.00015-1.3 μg kg-1. Compared with previously reported QuEChERS methods, the proposed method had improved sensitivity and benefited from low matrix effects. #link# The recoveries of analytes in various grains were in the range 60.8-108% with relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 13%. Moreover, the Fe3O4MWCNTs@copolymer exhibited good synthetic reproducibility and rapid magnetic separation (less than 10 s). The research provides a versatile platform to develop multi-functional QuEChERS adsorbents based on the amphiphilic block copolymer. For a long time, the Cyperid clade (Thurniceae-Juncaceae-Cyperaceae) was considered a group of species possessing holocentromeres exclusively. The basal phylogenetic position of Prionium serratum (Thunb.) Drège (Thurniceae) within Cyperids makes this species an important specimen to understand the centromere evolution within this clade. In contrast to the expectation, the chromosomal distribution of the centromere-specific histone H3 (CENH3), alpha-tubulin and different centromere-associated post-translational histone modifications (H3S10ph, H3S28ph and H2AT120ph) demonstrate a monocentromeric organisation of P. serratum chromosomes. Analysis of the high-copy repeat composition resulted in the identification of two centromere-localised satellite repeats. Hence, monocentricity was the ancestral condition for the Juncaceae-Cyperaceae-Thurniaceae Cyperid clade, and holocentricity in this clade has independently arisen at least twice after differentiation of the three families, once in Juncaceae and the other one in Cyperaceae. In this context, methods suitable for the identification of holocentromeres are discussed. As an important endogenous growth factor, PDGF-BB can effectively promote neurogenesis, thus is considered as a potential agent for Parkinson's disease (PD) therapy. However, the protective function of PDGF-BB on neuronal cells, especially the molecular mechanism, remains less clear, which is needed to explore before its clinical practice. In this study, we investigated the function and mechanism of PDGF-BB against 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) toxicity in SH-SY5Y cells, a widely used cellular tool for PD-related molecular study. Our results indicated that PDGF-BB exerts a prominent protective effect against neurotoxin MPP+-triggered ROS generation and cellular loss. We further dissected the molecular mechanism involved in this process by using specific pharmacological inhibitors and validated that the distinct signaling pathways PI3K/Akt/GSK-3β and MEK/ERK are involved in the process against MPP+ toxicity upon PDGF-BB treatment. link2 We also detected that activation of upstream PI3K/Akt/GSK-3β and MER/ERK signaling pathways contribute to phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of the downstream effector cyclic response element-binding protein (CREB), a known transcription factor to exhibit neuroprotective and growth-promoting effects. Using genetic approach, we further confirmed that the activation of CREB is involved in PDGF-BB-mediated protection in MPP+-exposed SH-SY5Y cells. Together, these data demonstrated the protective effect of PDGF-BB in MPP+-mediated toxicity in SH-SY5Y cells and verified the involved molecular mechanism in PDGF-BB-mediated neuroprotection.Fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) is inflammation of the paranasal sinus mucosa due to fungal infections, which can be invasive or non-invasive. The occurrence of a sphenoid mucocele with a fungal ball is rare. We report a case of sphenoid sinus mucocele with a fungal ball caused by Scedosporium apiopermum in a 32-year-old female who presented to the Emergency Department with persistent headache not relieved on medications. The radiological images showed a mucocele with clival osteomyelitis. Urgent endoscopic examination and debridement was undertaken which demonstrated a mucocele with fungal ball. Microbiological examination confirmed it to be Scedosporium apiopermum. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) critically regulates several essential biological functions, such as cell growth, metabolism, survival, and immune response by forming two important complexes, namely, mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) and complex 2 (mTORC2). mTOR signaling is often dysregulated in cancers and has been considered an attractive cancer therapeutic target. Great efforts have been made to develop efficacious mTOR inhibitors, particularly mTOR kinase inhibitors, which suppress mTORC1 and mTORC2; however, major success has not been achieved. With the strong scientific rationale, the intriguing question is why cancers are insensitive or not responsive to mTOR-targeted cancer therapy in clinics. Beyond early findings on induced activation of PI3K/Akt, MEK/ERK, and Mnk/eIF4E survival signaling pathways that compromise the efficacy of rapalog-based cancer therapy, recent findings on the essential role of GSK3 in mediating cancer cell response to mTOR inhibitors and mTORC1 inhibition-induced upregulation of PD-L1 in cancer cells may provide some explanations. These new findings may also offer us the opportunity to rationally utilize mTOR inhibitors in cancer therapy. Further elucidation of the biology of complicated mTOR networks may bring us the hope to develop effective therapeutic strategies with mTOR inhibitors against cancer.C-type lectin-like receptor 2 (CLEC-2) is a platelet surface-activating receptor with the prominent involvement in platelet activation, which was found to be associated with the progression and prognosis of acute ischemic stroke patients. Although podoplanin is the only known endogenous ligand for CLEC-2, the role of podoplanin/CLEC-2 in cerebral ischemia injury was unclear. In selleck compound , we examined their role by using a mouse middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. The expression of CLEC-2 and podoplanin increased after ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, peaked at 24 h, and then decreased gradually. link3 Podoplanin and CLEC-2 co-localized mainly in the ischemia/reperfusion cortex and expressed on neurons and microglia. Anti-podoplanin antibody pretreatment reduced cerebral infarct volume from 52.67 ± 4.67 to 34.08 ± 6.04% (P less then 0.05) and attenuated the neurological deficits during acute stage and recovery stage. Moreover, a significant decrease of IL-18 and IL-1β was observed in the mice pretreated with the anti-podoplanin antibody. Our results demonstrate that the podoplanin-CLEC-2 axis might play an important role in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in mice by promoting inflammatory reactions.Pichia pastoris expression system was introduced with post-translation process similar to higher eukaryotes. Preliminary studies were performed toward process intensification and magnetic immobilization of this system. In this experiment, effects of magnetic immobilization on the structure of recombinant protein were evaluated. P. pastoris cell which express human serum albumin (HSA) was used as a model. The cells were immobilized with various concentrations of APTES coated magnetite nanoparticles. HSA production was done over 5 days induction and structure of the product was analyzed by UV-vis, fluorescence, and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Second derivative deconvolution method was used to analyze the secondary structure of HSA. P. pastoris cell that were immobilized with 0.5 and 1 mg/mL of nanoparticles were produced HSA with intact structure. But immobilization with 2 mg/mL of nanoparticles resulted in some modifications in the secondary structures (i.e., α-helixes and β-turns) of produced HSA. Based on these data, immobilization of P.
