Although the Food and Drug Administration banned other characterising flavours in cigarettes, menthol cigarettes are still available to consumers. Young adult new smokers are initiating with menthol cigarettes, such that the prevalence of young adults menthol versus non-menthol smokers is increasing. Experimentation with menthol cigarettes is associated with progression to regular smoking and nicotine dependence. This ongoing clinical trial in young adult smokers measures appeal and the reinforcing value of smoking menthol versus non-menthol cigarettes and the impact of these variables on changes in smoking behaviour at a 6-month follow-up.
Reinforcement for menthol smoking is assessed in the laboratory using a validated behavioural economic choice task, and appeal is measured in the natural environment using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Analyses will examine differences between menthol and non-menthol cigarette smoking on measures of subjective response in the laboratory and via EMA, and how subjective response mediates the association between menthol preference at baseline and smoking outcomes at follow-up.
This protocol was approved by the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Institutional Review Board (#10581). The findings will isolate the unique effects of menthol in smoking and will help inform regulatory decisions about the abuse liability of menthol cigarettes. Findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journal articles and presentations at national and international conferences.

Emergency department physicians and nurses are at high risk of compassion fatigue, burnout and depression. The purpose of this study was to examine the inter-relationship between compassion fatigue, burnout, compassion satisfaction and depression in emergency department physicians and nurses.
A cross-sectional study.
This study was conducted in five tertiary hospitals in five different cities across the province of Sichuan, China, in 2021.
A total of 342 emergency department physicians and nurses participated in the study.

Among the study participants, 100% were found to have depressive symptoms, 27.8% had low compassion satisfaction, 2.3% had high burnout and 3.8% had compassion fatigue. In the final multiple linear regression model, marital status (p=0.008; 95% CI -5.205 to -0.789), history of chronic disease (p=0.003; 95% CI -6.461 to -1.386), compassion satisfaction (p<0.001; 95% CI 0.593 to 1.274), burnout (p=0.019er these findings to develop appropriate psychological interventions and strategies, to prevent, alleviate or treat severe depression among emergency department physicians and nurses in the province of Sichuan.
Dyslipidaemia is a critical factor in the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Concerning dyslipidaemia regulation, we advocate for lifestyle interventions such as diet to complement drug treatment. Numerous studies have confirmed that oat β-glucan, a critical component of oats, can help lower cholesterol. However, there is no conclusive evidence for the efficacy of oats and their products in the treatment of dyslipidaemia. As a result, we have developed this protocol to serve as a guide for future research on oat intervention for dyslipidaemias.
We will conduct a search of eight databases or websites (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CNKI, SinoMed, VIP and Wanfang) to identify studies on oats' ability to regulate blood lipid levels. Two authors will screen articles independently, extract data based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and assess the quality and bias of included studies. To assess and quantify heterogeneity,

statistics will be used. If there is significant heterogeneity between studies, the source of the heterogeneity will be investigated using subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis. We will analyse potential publication bias using the Begg funnel plot and Egger's weighted regression statistics. To assess the quality of evidence for the primary outcomes, the Grades of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation method will be used.
This study is based on the existing literature and data in the databases. It is not subject to ethical review. The findings, on the other hand, will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. These findings may aid in the management of dyslipidaemia on a daily basis.

CRD42021226751.An abundant number of nanomaterials have been discovered to possess enzyme-like catalytic activity, termed nanozymes. It is identified that a variety of internal and external factors influence the catalytic activity of nanozymes. SAdenosylLhomocysteine However, there is a lack of essential methodologies to uncover the hidden mechanisms between nanozyme features and enzyme-like activity. Here, a data-driven approach is demonstrated that utilizes machine-learning algorithms to understand particle-property relationships, allowing for classification and quantitative predictions of enzyme-like activity exhibited by nanozymes. High consistency between predicted outputs and the observations is confirmed by accuracy (90.6%) and R2 (up to 0.80). Furthermore, sensitive analysis of the models reveals the central roles of transition metals in determining nanozyme activity. As an example, the models are successfully applied to predict or design desirable nanozymes by uncovering the hidden relationship between different periods of transition metals and their enzyme-like performance. This study offers a promising strategy to develop nanozymes with desirable catalytic activity and demonstrates the potential of machine learning within the field of material science.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is related to increased inflammatory processes. The effects of resistance exercise on inflammatory biomarkers in T2DM are controversial. Our purpose was to determine the effectiveness of resistance exercise on inflammatory biomarkers in patients diagnosed with T2DM.
We searched four databases until September 2021. We included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of the effects of resistance exercise on inflammatory biomarkers (C-reactive protein [CRP], tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-10) in patients with T2DM. A random effects meta-analysis was conducted to determine the standardized mean difference (SMD) and the raw mean difference (MD) for CRP.
Thirteen RCTs were included in the review, and 11 in the meta-analysis for CRP. Lower CRP levels were observed when resistance exercise was compared with the control groups (SMD=-0.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.37 to -0.02). When conducting the MD meta-analysis, resistance exercise showed a significant decrease in CRP of -0.59 mg/dL (95% CI, -0.88 to -0.30); otherwise, in the control groups, the CRP values increased 0.19 mg/dL (95% CI, 0.17 to 0.21).
Evidence supports resistance exercise as an effective strategy to manage systemic inflammation by decreasing CRP levels in patients with T2DM. The evidence is still inconclusive for other inflammatory biomarkers.

Despite complex multifactorial etiology, advanced glycation end products are involved in the pathogenesis of many causative age- and diabetes-related eye diseases. Deglycating enzyme fructosamine-3-kinase (FN3K) was recently proposed as a potential therapeutic, but for further biopharmaceutical development, knowledge on its manufacturability and stability and mobility in the vitreous fluid of the eye is indispensable. We evaluated recombinant production of FN3K in two host systems, and its diffusion behavior in both bovine and human vitreous. Compared to Escherichia coli, intracellular production in Pichia pastoris yielded more and higher purity FN3K. The yeast-produced enzyme was used in a first attempt to use fluorescence correlation spectroscopy to study protein mobility in non-sonicated bovine vitreous, human vitreous, and intact bovine eyes. It was demonstrated that FN3K retained mobility upon intravitreal injection, although a certain delay in diffusion was observed. Alkylation of free cysteines was tolerated both in terms of enzymatic activity and vitreous diffusion. Ex vivo diffusion data gathered and the availability of yeast-produced high purity enzyme now clear the path for in vivo pharmacokinetics studies of FN3K.In tumourigenesis, oncogenes or dysregulated tumour suppressor genes alter the canonical translation machinery leading to a reprogramming of the translatome that, in turn, promotes the translation of selected mRNAs encoding proteins involved in proliferation and metastasis. In this review we discuss how RNA binding proteins (RBPs) within the canonical translation factor machinery are dysregulated in cancers and how targeting such proteins is leading to new therapeutic avenues.Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is an environmental hormone disrupter. This study was designed to investigate whether DBP adsorbed in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) can easily cross the blood-testis barrier and slow down the degradation of DBP in male mice, thereby prolonging the interference effect of DBP. The results showed that in male Balb/C mice, the sperm density of the MWCNTs group and the DBP plus MWCNTs group decreased significantly (p less then 0.05); and the sperm deformity rate increased significantly (p less then 0.05). Testicular tissue sections from the combined exposure group showed that most of the seminiferous tubules were atrophied, there were more large gaps between the cells in the tubules, and the number of mature-sperm decreased. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels increased significantly in the combined exposure group (p less then 0.01). Proteomics results showed that there were 231 differentially expressed proteins in the combined exposure group compared with the MWCNTs only group, and 69 differentially expressed proteins compared with the DBP group. GO enrichment analysis showed that the differentially expressed proteins mainly include 60 s acid ribosomal protein P1; nuclear autoantigen sperm protein; centromere protein V; and other proteins related to cell division. These results indicate that MWCNTs with adsorbed DBP can increase oxidative damage in the testis of male mice, interfere with DNA replication and cell division in testicular tissue cells, induce cell apoptosis, and destroy the normal spermatogenic function of the testis.The compound 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) is an environmental pollutant belonging to the PAHs, which reportedly have the potential to disrupt the endocrine systems of animals. In the present study, 4-week-old male and female mice were given 3-MC through their diet at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg of chow for 6 weeks before pregnancy. The first filial (F1) generation offspring of exposed or unexposed parental mice were sacrificed at the age of 5 or 10 weeks (F1-5 W or F1-10 W), and the potential effects on the F0 and F1 offspring were evaluated. The results showed that the serum and testicular testosterone (T) levels and the genes involved in T synthesis in F0 males and male F1-5 W individuals born from female mice exposed to 3-MC were significantly decreased. In addition, histological analysis suggested that exposure to 3-MC significantly disrupted testicular morphology in F0 mice and in the offspring of female mice exposed to 3-MC. Further investigation revealed that genes involved in spermatogenesis, such as Phosphoglycerate kinase 2 (Pgk2), Glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (Gdnf), Myeloblastosis oncogene (Myb), DEAD box helicase 4 (Ddx4) and KIT proto-oncogene receptor tyrosine kinase (Kit), were suppressed in these mice.
