Phytoplankton have evolved a capability to acquire phosphorus (P) from dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) since the preferred form, dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP, or Pi), is often limited in parts of the ocean. Phytic acid (PA) is abundantly synthesized in plants and rich in excreta of animals, potentially enriching the DOP pool in coastal oceans. However, whether and how PA may be used by phytoplankton are poorly understood. Paenibacillus sp. strain UY79 did not affect symbiotic association or growth promotion of alfalfa plants when co-inoculated with rhizobia. Adolescent athletes who had undergone internal fixation and simultaneous lateral retinacular lengthening for an unstable OCD lesion of the lateral trochlear groove were retrospectively reviewed. Subjective assessments included the Lysholm score, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score, Tegner activity scale, and an athletic questionnaire. Functional tests included isokinetic muscle strength, single-leg hop for distance, single-leg vertical jump, and Y-balance. Pre- and postoperative radiographs and magnetic resonance images were reviewed.

The mean ± SD age of the 17 patients included in this study was 15.9 ± 0.9 years; last clinical retinacular lengthening in adolescent athletes achieved satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes. Therefore, this combined surgical technique could be considered an effective treatment for lateral trochlear groove OCD, with a high rate of return to sport.

We assessed the effectiveness of an oral sylvatic plague vaccine delivered in baits to black-tailed PD (Cynomys ludovicianus, BTPD) from 2013 to 2017 on the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge (CMR) in northcentral Montana. We permanently marked BTPD on four paired vaccine (N = 1,349 individuals) and placebo plots (N = 926; 7,027 total captures). We analyzed capture-recapture data under a Cormack-Jolly-Seber model to estimate annual apparent survival. Overall, survival averaged 0.05 lower on vaccine plots than on paired placebo plots. Immediately before noticeable die-offs and detecting plague on pairs CMR1 and CMR2, 89% of BTPD sampled on vaccine plots had consumed at least one bait and the immune system of 40% were likely boosted by consuming baits over multiple years. Survival to the following year was 0.16 and 0.05 on the vaccine plots and 0.19 and 0.06 on the placebo plots for pairs CMR1 and CMR2, respectively. These rates were markedly lower than 0.63, the overall average estimate on those same plots during the previous 3 years. PD populations subjected to such large die-offs would not be expected to sustain a BFF population. An overriding limitation to achieving sufficient protection rests with vaccine delivery constraints. Late summer/fall bait distribution results in the highest bait uptake rates. However, the PD birth pulse each spring can double the size of populations in most years, greatly reducing the proportion of vaccinates in populations and diminishing potential herd immunity benefits. Expressions of individual Slit-Robo genes have been used in calculating univariable hazard ratios (HRuni) for predicting cancer prognosis in the literature. However, Slit-Robo members do not act independently; hence, hazard ratios from multivariable Cox regression (HRmulti) on the whole gene set can further lead to identification of cancer-specific, novel, and independent prognostic gene pairs or modules. Herein, we obtained mRNA expressions of the Slit-Robo family consisting of four Robos (ROBO1/2/3/4) and three Slits (SLIT1/2/3), along with four types of survival outcome across cancers found in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We used cluster heat maps to visualize closely associated pairs/modules of prognostic genes across 33 different cancers. We found a smaller number of significant genes in HRmulti than in HRuni, suggesting that the former analysis was less redundant. High ROBO4 expression emerged as relatively protective within the family, in both types of HR analyses. Multivariable Cox regression, on the other hand, revealed significantly more HR signatures containing Slit-Robo pairs acting in opposing directions than those containing Slit-Slit or Robo-Robo pairs for disease-specific survival. Furthermore, we discovered, through the online app SmulTCan's lasso regression, Slit-Robo gene subsets that significantly differentiated between high- versus low-risk prognosis patient groups, particularly for renal cancers and low-grade glioma. The statistical pipeline reported herein can help test independent and significant pairs/modules within a codependent gene family for cancer prognostication, and thus should also prove useful in personalized/precision medicine research.It is hypothesized that L-arginine (ARG) can improve etoposide (VP-16) water solubility while preserving its anticancer activity. At the VP-16 ARG ratio of 410 (w/w), the drug apparent solubility increased significantly (∼65-folds) with a 3.5-fold improvement in the drug dissolution rate.
