The adsorption and desorption of cesium (Cs) on clays of contaminated soil in a rhizosphere zone can be greatly affected by various biogeochemical processes, the timespans of which are usually months to years. Herein, we present several representative scenarios of the binding of Cs on diverse sites of vermiculitized biotite by controlled Cs adsorption to particles of different sizes. We investigated whether and how the fixed Cs in the different scenarios is desorbed by ambient and hydrothermal treatments with several low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs). The results showed that the sorbed Cs was discriminatively retained in the un-collapsed, partially collapsed, and thoroughly collapsed structures of vermiculites. The desorption of the sorbed Cs by hydrothermal LMWOAs extractions was easily realized in the un-collapsed structure, but was limited or minimal in the partially collapsed and thoroughly collapsed structures. The Cs desorption varied in accord with the LMWOA species applied and increased with the acid concentration, temperature, and number of treating cycles. The analysis of Cs-desorbed specimens confirmed their partial destruction and interlayer expansion, suggesting that the underlying mechanism of Cs removal by LMWOAs involves not only acid dissolution and complexation but also the accelerated weathering of clays within a short time under hydrothermal conditions. Our findings contribute novel insights into the mobility, bioavailability, and fate of Cs in contaminated soils and its removal from these soils for environmental restorations. Among a variety of traditional Chinese medicines, Shuanghuanglian injection (SHLI), has the highest incidence of injection-induced immediate hypersensitivity reactions (IHRs). However, the precise mechanisms of SHLI-induced IHRs remain to be understood. In the present study, we characteriszed IHRs as induced by SHLI by recording changes in physiological and hemodynamic indicators following intravenous injections of SHLI in rats and dogs. The results indicate that SHLI induced the release of histamine, decreased mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), increased SC5b-9 in rats and dogs, increased C4d and Bb in dogs without any changes in IgE. n vitro incubation of SHLI with serum from dogs in the presence of an inhibitor of complement activation (EGTA/Mg2+) resulted in an increase in C4d. These results suggest that SHLI induces anaphylactoid reactions in rats and dogs. Furthermore, SHLI appears to activate the complement system through classical and alternative pathways in dogs in vivo. Additional experiments in mice demonstrated that SHLI induces locus coeruleus infiltration and results in significant increase in vascular permeability within the skin of mice. We established a reliable method for the evaluation of anaphylactoid reactions induced by complex compounds, using multiple physiological indicators, different experimental models in vivo and in vitro. BACKGROUND Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a hereditary lysosomal storage disease with progressive brain neurodegeneration. Mutations in ceroid lipofuscinosis neuronal protein 5 (CLN5) cause CLN5 disease, a severe condition characterized by seizures, visual failure, motor decline, and progressive cognitive deterioration. This study aimed to identify causative gene variants in Pakistani consanguineous families diagnosed with NCL. METHODS After a thorough clinical and neuroradiological characterization, whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed in 3 patients from 2 unrelated families. Segregation analysis was subsequently performed through Sanger sequencing ANALYSIS WES led to the identification of the 2 novel homozygous variants c.925_926del, (p.Leu309AlafsTer4) and c.477 T > C, (p.Cys159Arg). CONCLUSION In this study, we report two novel CLN5 cases in the Punjab region of Pakistan. Our observations will help clinicians observe and compare common and unique clinical features of NCL patients, further improving our current understanding of NCL. BACKGROUND Recreational use of nitrous oxide (NO) in the general public has led to increasing reports of NO-induced demyelination (NOID). We describe the varying clinical presentations and pathophysiology, and offer a treatment paradigm. METHODS A literature search of MEDLINE and EMBASE resulted in 42 publications with 37 studies meeting the inclusion criteria, for a total of 51 patients. Our case series included 5 patients seen from 2014 to 2018 followed over 3-60 months. RESULTS Those with sensory symptoms and subjective weakness were categorized as having "mild" symptoms (25%). Symptoms indicating involvement outside the dorsal columns such as observer-graded weakness were categorized as "moderate" (61%). Patients with the aforementioned plus cognitive effects were categorized as "severe" (12%). There was no dose-dependent relationship between the amount of NO used and clinical impairment. There was a trend between the severity of neurologic impairment and serum levels of B12. Two patients were noncompliant. One initiated only oral therapy and did not improve. One received injections a month apart and worsened. CONCLUSIONS Patients with NOID tend to have worse symptoms when presenting with lower serum vitamin B12 levels and have good recovery rates when treated with intramuscular B12 and oral supplementation. PURPOSE Optic nerve compression by mass lesions at the optic chiasm leads to loss of visual function which can be recovered after decompression surgery. In this study, we evaluated the prognostic ability of macular ganglion cell layer (mGCL) thickness measured with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) for predicting postoperative visual outcome of compressive optic neuropathy (CON) related to parasellar tumors. METHODS This observational cohort study used data from the Department of Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital between 2013 and 2018. Seventy-nine eyes from 79 patients with CON due to parasellar tumors who underwent surgery were included. Patients were divided into either a visual recovery group or a non-recovery group according to the degree of postoperative visual field (VF) impairment. SD-OCT scanning with automated segmentation was performed to measure the circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) and the mGCL thickness in the nine macular subfields as defined by the ETDRS and 8 × 8 posterior pole grid. Correlations between preoperative cpRNFL thickness, mGCL thickness and postoperative VF sensitivity were assessed. The prognostic ability of mGCL thickness for predicting visual recovery after surgical decompression in each ETDRS subfield and posterior pole grid quadrant was evaluated. RESULTS The central inferonasal and superonasal quadrant mGCL thicknesses measured by the 8 × 8 posterior pole grid showed the best predictability of postoperative visual outcome (AUROC = 0.963 and 0.953, respectively), which was superior to the prognostic power of the average cpRNFL. The central inferonasal quadrant mGCL thickness significantly correlated with the superotemporal quadrant VF sensitivity (R2 = 0.589). CONCLUSIONS The mGCL thickness in the central nasal quadrants measured by SD-OCT is an excellent predictor of visual recovery after chiasmal decompression. Organic near-infrared (NIR) emitters with simultaneously high absorption coefficient and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are highly desirable for biomedical imaging yet seldom reported because these two aspects are usually contradictory. The conjugated planar structures exhibit strong absorption but the emission is seriously quenched in aggregate state, whereas the twisted unplanar molecules display opposite phenomena. Herein, we report a kind of dragonfly-shaped NIR aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) with both high absorption coefficient (6.24 × 104 M-1 cm-1) and superior PLQY (51.2%) for precise image-guided cancer surgery. The compound possessing a conjugated structure with vibrational substitutes has been synthesized, in which the good conjugation enables strong absorption, and the molecular vibration affords AIE signature. Moreover, the nonfluorescent processes are significantly suppressed, making every effort to boost fluorescence. The highly bright and stable AIE nanoparticles warrant efficient in vitro cellular imaging and in vivo tumor imaging. Moreover, the fluorescence imaging-guided cancer surgery helps to precisely delineate tiny tumor nodules, significantly improving the cancer surgery outcome. This work will inspire more insights into the development of organic NIR emitters with high brightness for biomedical applications. Transoral endocrine surgery encompasses a group of operations whereby the thyroid or parathyroid gland is removed through the oral vestibule. This operation has the advantage of leaving no cutaneous scar and a risk profile similar to open surgery. Adoption of this technique has increased dramatically over the last several years. It is of paramount importance for surgeons to undergo adequate training before adopting this technique. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies have reported high levels of periodontal diseases worldwide. Over the last 40 years, Norway has introduced several measures including major financial support to reduce periodontal diseases. The aims of this study were to establish the present level of periodontal treatment, the treatment profiles for the nation, and to assess if long-term clinical data support the findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS The database of the Norwegian Health Economic Administration for 2013 was analysed to establish the prevalence of treated periodontitis in a cross-sectional register-based study. Treatment profiles including patients' ages, gender, geographic distributions, treatment types, prosthetic tooth replacements and the treatment distributions between the dental health professionals were assessed. RESULTS 4.4% of the 20 years and older age group was treated for periodontitis. More females (55%) than males (45%) were treated with predominance in the 60-69 year age group. Private general dental practitioners performed 43.8% of the total periodontal treatment, while dental hygienists performed 22.5%. Periodontists performed 32.8% of the non-surgical and 74.6% of the surgical treatment. Tooth replacements for teeth lost due to periodontal diseases were provided for 0.57% of the population. Clinical studies from Norway showed marked improvements in the periodontal parameters examined over the last 40 years. CONCLUSION The frequency of periodontal treatments in Norway was low, but sufficient to maintain major tooth retention for the population. Long-term external clinical data supported these findings. The treatments were well distributed between private general dental practitioners, hygienists and periodontists. © 2020 The Authors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Records for 20 patients who underwent treatment for adamantinoma from 1975 to 2018 were reviewed for demographic, clinical, and pathological data, treatment details, postoperative complications, and outcomes. RESULTS Patients presented at a median age of 22 years (1-79 years) 14 patients had a localized primary tumor, three presented with local recurrence, and three with metastatic disease. Median tumor size was 5.7 cm (0.5-15.5 cm). Wide excision was performed primarily in 15 cases; the remaining five patients underwent intralesional curettage. At a median follow-up of 7.3 years, 14 patients had no evidence of disease; two patients were alive with disease, and four patients died from the disease. Local recurrence and distant metastasis occurred at a median of 11.
