88 ± 0.12 g (L h)-1, which represents the highest efficiency for microbial production of p-CA. Therefore, this work not only reports the identification of two new TALs from actinomycetes, but also provides an efficient way to produce the industrially valuable material p-CA.In this work, the process performance of three parallel anaerobic digesters was evaluated while treating emulsified long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) (i.e., palmitic, stearic and oleic acid) at two different organic loading rates (OLR) (2 and 4 g L-1 day-1). The digester treating palmitic acid achieved a biogas yield of 0.42 ± 0.05 L g-1 COD with a digester effluent COD of 2.3 ± 0.4 g L-1 and VFA concentrations below 250 mg L-1. Stearic acid showed lower biogas yield values (0.34 ± 0.05 L g-1 COD) with low effluent COD (2.5 ± 0.4 g L-1) and VFA concentrations ( less then 350 mg L-1). On the contrary, anaerobic digestion of oleic acid was accompanied with increased effluent COD (4.5 ± 0.7 g L-1) and VFA concentrations (2.7 ± 1.5 g L-1). As such, COD removal efficiency remained at 89 ± 1% compared to 95 ± 1% for the digesters treating palmitic and stearic acid. During continuous digester operation, there was a decrease in VFA concentrations (around 1-2 g L-1), combined with increasing biogas yield values up to 0.51 ± 0.04 L g-1 COD, possibly due to biomass adaptation to oleic acid. Digester foaming was recorded when the accumulated COD was higher than 200, 1200 and 500 mg COD g-1 MLSS for the digester treating palmitic, stearic and oleic acid, respectively. ADM1 simulation allowed for the determination of the maximum specific LCFA consumption rate constant (km) which was equal to 4.8, 1.6 and 8.0 day-1 for palmitic, stearic and oleic acid respectively.We introduced an electronic triage system into our osteoporosis service to actively manage referral demand in a busy outpatient service. Our study demonstrated the effectiveness of e-triage in supporting alternative management pathways, through use of virtual advice and direct to investigation services, to improve patient access. PURPOSE Osteoporosis referrals are increasing with awareness of the potential for prevention of fragility fracture and with complex decision making around management with long-term bisphosphonate therapy. We examined whether active triage of referrals might improve referral management processes and patient access to osteoporosis services. METHODS We implemented electronic triage (e-triage) of referrals to our osteoporosis service using the Northern Ireland electronic health care record. This included the option of 'advice only', direct to investigation with DXA or face-to-face appointments at the consultant-led complex osteoporosis service. We anticipated that there was scope to mana further improve systems access through multidisciplinary team working, virtual clinics and future information technology developments.Tartary buckwheat rice-type cultivars, which allow easy dehulling, lacked periclinal cell divisions that proceed underneath the epidermis in the proximity of ovary midribs in non-rice-type cultivars. The easy dehulling in these cultivars was associated with a G→A substitution in an AGAMOUS ortholog. Ease of dehulling in Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) can affect the quality of its products. Tartary buckwheat cultivars that allow easy dehulling are called rice-type cultivars. The rice and non-rice hull types are determined by a single gene, but this gene is unclear. Here, we show that cells underneath the epidermis in the proximity of ovary midribs undergo periclinal cell divisions in non-rice-type cultivars but do not in a rice-type cultivar. The cells that arose from the periclinal cell divisions later underwent lignification, which should increase mechanical strength of hulls. In RNA sequencing, a partial mRNA of an AGAMOUS ortholog in Tartary buckwheat (FtAG) was found to be absent in the rice-type cultivar. Cloning of this gene revealed that this is a 42-bp deletion due to a G→A substitution at a splice acceptor site in the FtAG genomic region. In F2 progeny derived from a cross between non-rice-type and rice-type cultivars, all the rice-type plants exhibited the homozygous A/A allele at this site, whereas all the Tartary-type plants exhibited either the homozygous G/G allele or the heterozygous A/G allele. These results suggest that FtAG is a candidate for the gene that determines ease of dehulling in Tartary buckwheat. The DNA marker that we developed to distinguish the FtAG alleles can be useful in breeding Tartary buckwheat cultivars.The information available on microalgae-sourced compounds, especially antibiotics and other bioactive compounds, and their potential commercial applications is still insufficient. In this study, antibacterial activity, metabolites, and molecular characterization of Phormidium autumnale, which was isolated from samples collected from different natural freshwater sources in Ankara, Turkey, were investigated. Sequencing results of 16s rDNA confirmed the molecular identification of P. autumnale by 99%. AG1478 It was determined that the peak values of some phenolic compounds and cyclic peptides were consistent with the 1653-1389 cm-1 band regions in the FTIR spectra of the species. The antibacterial activities of P. autumnale cyanobacteria (CBA) extracts that were obtained by using different solvents were tested on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus epidermidis, methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Enterococcus faecalis by using a disc diffusion method. Also, the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and antimicrobial indexes of all extracts were determined. It was found that P. autumnale methanol extracts showed antibacterial activity on all test bacteria, whereas acetone extracts showed effects only on E. coli. For the inhibition of MR S. aureus, the control methanol extract was found to give very similar results to those exhibited by the control antibiotics, and the antimicrobial index results were determined to be 58.7-67.5%. According to the results of the analysis of methanol extract, gentisic acid, vanillic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, and catechin (especially phenolic compounds) were determined to be the active compounds. It can be concluded that P. autumnale is an alternative to current commercial applications as an antibacterial agent in phytotherapy.Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) consists of a plethora of therapeutic approaches aiming to both characterize and treat diseases. Its utilization has gained significant popularity in the western world and is even backed by the World Health Organization's decision to include TCM diagnostic patterns into the new revision of the International Classification of Diseases code, the global standard for diagnostic health information. As these developments and potentially far-reaching decisions can affect modern healthcare systems and daily clinical work as well as wildlife conservation, its underlying factual basis must be critically examined. This article therefore provides an overview of the evidence underlying the basic TCM concepts, such as Qi, meridians, acupuncture, pulse and tongue diagnostics as well as traditional herbal treatments. Moreover, it discusses whether scientific literature on TCM reflects the current standard for evidence-based research, as described in good scientific practice and good clinical practice guidelines. Importantly, misinformation regarding the therapeutic efficacy of animal-derived substances has lead and currently leads to problems with wildlife preservation and animal ethics. Thereby, ancient knowledge of herbal species and concoctions may serve as a possible treasure box rather than Pandora's box.In homeostasis, somatosensory C fibre afferents are hypothesised to mediate input to the brain about interactions with external stimuli and sympathetic efference provides the output that regulates bodily functions. We aimed to test this hypothesis and whether different types of innocuous somatosensory input have differential effects. Healthy volunteers performed a muscle fatigue (hand-grip) task to exhaustion, which produces increased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), as measured through microneurography. Participants completed the muscle fatigue task without concurrent cutaneous sensory stimulation (control) or we applied skin warming (heat pack) as a C fibre stimulation, slow brush stroking as C and Aβ fibre stimulation, or vibration as Aβ fibre stimulation, to the participant's forearm. We also measured heart rate, the duration of the hand-grip task, and ratings of pain at the end of the task. Concurrent skin warming showed increased MSNA compared to the other conditions. Tactile stimuli (brushing, vibration) were not significantly different to the control (no intervention) condition. Warming increased the pain from the muscle contraction, whereas the tactile stimuli did not. We interpret the effect of warming on MSNA as providing relevant afferent information during muscle contraction, which needed to be counteracted via vasoconstriction to maintain homeostasis. Brushing and vibration were less homeostatically relevant stimuli for the muscle contraction and hence had no significant effect. The findings add sensory specificity to our current understanding of homeostatic regulation through somatosensory afferent and sympathetic efferent pathways.Most studies on the regulation of speed and trajectory during ellipse drawing have used visual feedback. We used online auditory feedback (sonification) to induce implicit movement changes independently from vision. The sound was produced by filtering a pink noise with a band-pass filter proportional to movement speed. The first experiment was performed in 2D. Healthy participants were asked to repetitively draw ellipses during 45 s trials whilst maintaining a constant sonification pattern (involving pitch variations during the cycle). Perturbations were produced by modifying the slope of the mapping without informing the participants. All participants adapted spontaneously their speed they went faster if the slope decreased and slower if it increased. Higher velocities were achieved by increasing both the frequency of the movements and the perimeter of the ellipses, but slower velocities were achieved mainly by decreasing the perimeter of the ellipses. The shape and the orientation of the ellipses were not significantly altered. The analysis of the speed-curvature power law parameters showed consistent modulations of the speed gain factor, while the exponent remained stable. The second experiment was performed in 3D and showed similar results, except that the main orientation of the ellipse also varied with the changes in speed. In conclusion, this study demonstrated implicit modulation of movement speed by sonification and robust stability of the ellipse geometry. Participants appeared to limit the decrease in movement frequency during slowing down to maintain a rhythmic and not discrete motor regimen.
