The feature of upgrading items allows players to upgrade their equipment. This can be accomplished by any item upgrader NPC.

All XCOM soldiers are capable of equipping one utilitarian item at the start of the campaign. Eventually, an additional slot is made available by acquiring certain types of armor or completing engineering research or experimental projects in the Proving Ground.
