The upgrade of an item allows players to boost the gear rating of an item up 700 points, and then give it a bonus. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory before heading to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading because of their unique stats. (For example, a perfectly broken point armor that is rolled can be used in melee PvP). Other items like weapons don't really change after an upgrade and therefore aren't worth the effort.

Weapons

Each piece of armor can be upgraded up to three levels, and the amount of materials and Rupees needed for each level will differ. You'll need anywhere from three Red Chuchu jelly and 10 Rupees to upgrade the first armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade the next one. For example, the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep up with a good-sized group of adversaries in most cold conditions, and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded all the way to +20 defense, providing you enough protection to withstand the full-on assault with a few of your friends.

You can't upgrade your armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior it is best to focus on upgrading your armor to increase physical strength or spell power. It's also worth saving your armor upgrades for armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield or the helmet you use for the final boss battle and the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.

By giving the jeweler 10 Twinkling Titanite in Gerudo Town and you will be able to gain some benefits to your armor. You'll typically want to keep these upgrades for the weapon that you'll use to beat the game. For example the Longsword or Battleaxe. Potions

Once the old Trinkets are not usable, they can be upgraded. This allows players to increase both their power and value over time. They can also be traded between players, making them an extremely popular alternative to gold.

In general players should make upgrades to their highest priority items first. This means that the top-in slot items for each class are upgraded first before their secondary gear and other pieces of equipment they won't replace in the near future (such as a ring or an cloak).
