ADHD Assessment: What Nobody Is Discussing
CAMHS ADHD Assessment

If your child or young person is struggling, they could be sent to CAMHS for an ADHD assessment. They will usually be asked to bring with them their parent(s)/guardian(s) and a teacher who knows them well.

In response to COVID-19 parents and caregivers' responses to interviews highlighted the benefits of remote appointments, but also that face-to–face appointments would be preferred during assessments.

Symptoms

If you have ADHD, your child or teenager may have trouble sitting still, forgetting things, having trouble falling asleep, and getting easily distracted by external stimuli. They might also have difficulty staying on top of tasks and activities at home or at school, struggle to make sense of information and may find it difficult to follow directions. They might lose things and have trouble finishing homework or assignments and may miss appointments. They may injure themselves or others if not careful. They could have a difficult time in relationships, have trouble finding work or a job and may have difficulty to connect with their family members.

Some kids and teens with ADHD are highly impulsive. They might fumble or tap their fingers, try to wait for their turn in their activities, or be in a state of constant conversation. They may not listen to other people and be more likely to engage in risky behaviors like using drugs or engaging in sexual activity that is dangerous. Certain people with ADHD suffer from emotional issues and can easily become irritable or even angry. They might also be overly sensitive to criticism or feel that others are criticising them.

The symptoms of ADHD are different for everyone and they can change as a person gets older. They can affect anyone regardless of race, gender or background. ADHD can be treated with medication. However, it is crucial to be aware that treatment does not eliminate all the symptoms of the disorder, and may cause adverse side effects.

The first step to getting assistance for ADHD is to have an assessment of the severity of adhd in camhs. The most popular method to get this done is to go to your GP and ask them for an appointment. They might refer you to a mental health clinic to conduct a specialist ADHD assessment.

The ELFT's Quality Improvement team (QI) collaborated with City and Hackney ADHD teams to improve the timeliness and accuracy of their assessment process. As a result, the average waiting time from referral to feedback from the assessment was reduced to less than 12 weeks. This is in the range of the trust's goal.

Diagnosis

ADHD is a medical disorder which can be treated through medication, behavioral therapy or education. Children and parents might find it difficult to grasp, but there are many resources available. Talk to your GP when you or your child is showing symptoms of ADHD. They can refer you to a specialist CAMHS who will evaluate and diagnose your child.

If your child is being referred to an CAMHS ADHD assessment service, they typically will be viewed by a member or two of the team. They will also ask the child's parents or caregivers, and a teacher who knows them well for feedback. The team will use standard assessment methods and detailed history taking to evaluate your child's challenges. They will also provide Conners questionnaires to the child as well as their parent(s) or guardian(s) as well as an educator who knows the child well to complete prior to the assessment appointment.

The CAMHS team will then determine if your child requires further testing and refer them an experienced psychologist. The psychologist will use a variety of tests to see how your child handles their emotions and behavior in various situations. They will examine how your child behaves at home, at school, and in public places.

During the examination, your clinician will discuss with you and your child what they've discovered. They will then issue a diagnosis and discuss the options for treatment with you. Medication is often used to treat people suffering from ADHD, but this will not remove all of the symptoms.

Rotherham CAMHS is divided into different pathways and the "ADHD assessment pathway" falls within the Neurodevelopmental Assessment pathway. However, some children and young people have their ADHD assessment through the Intellectual Disability CAMHS pathway. This is because their cognitive capabilities are higher and their difficulties more complicated than other children and youth who utilize CAMHS. This pathway is further explained on the "ID of CAMHS" page on this website.

Treatment

The NHS offers specialized assistance for children and adolescents with ADHD through local services in your area. This could include a psychiatrist, a psychologist or nurses. You'll be asked to write about your symptoms, and how they impact your life. They could also speak with your teachers, parents or other caregivers. iampsychiatry.com may decide to treat you with medication or suggest different treatment options instead. The NHS website has information on treatments and what you can expect.

A recent report2 identified the issue of lengthy waiting times for CAMHS services. The wait times for the evaluation of ADHD are particularly long even when the care is of a high standard. While national guidelines3 and local transformation plans4 stress the importance of early identification of children and young people with ADHD and guidelines on assessment has been provided but there is no specific guidance on how long a child or young person should wait to see a doctor.

This quality improvement (QI) project was designed to speed up the ADHD assessment process. This was achieved using a simple instrument for data collection and integrating it into the clinical system. This has enabled the average amount of time from the time of referral to the date of the ADHD assessment feedback to be lowered. The QI team would also like to thank City and Hackney CAMHS ADHD for their dedication and hardwork throughout this project.

If a medication has been prescribed, the doctors discuss the available options with you and your loved ones. There are many medications which can treat ADHD. However they all have distinct adverse effects. It is essential to know what to expect before you begin any treatment.

In addition to medications, there are a variety of non-pharmacological interventions that can help improve the symptoms of ADHD. These include parenting programs such as behaviour therapy, and psychological treatments. They can be delivered individually or in groups. A person with ADHD might find it beneficial to use organisation and planning apps.

The project involved 12 participants who were recently been referred to the CAMHS ADHD pathway in a local Trust. Interviews were semi-structured and were conducted over the phone. Participants were recruited through an intentional sampling technique. This technique was chosen because it is regarded to be more ethical than the randomised controlled trial method that would normally be used in a research study.

Support

A diagnosis of ADHD can be stressful for parents and young people, as the symptoms can be misinterpreted and seen as bad behavior. There are a lot of support available through mental health services as well as organizations and charities that can help. It's important that families are aware of what to expect during the assessment process. CAMHS has issued guidance on the subject, which is available by clicking on the below links.

CAMHS also provide a variety of treatments for ADHD which include lifestyle and medication. However, it is vital to ensure that the appropriate treatment is selected for your child's needs, as different people respond differently to different medications. A CAMHS evaluation will involve discussions with a doctor or nurse and could involve a variety of tests, like blood tests and brain scans, which can help identify possible causes for the symptoms.

The City and Hackney ADHD team recently implemented an improvement project in quality to cut down on waiting times and increase satisfaction of users. The team conducted a series of meetings with service users throughout the assessment process, and identified key themes that informed the improvement of the process. For instance, some service users were of the opinion that the assessment was too long and there was not enough support on offer postassessment. They also would like to see more specific support for families and children who have been diagnosed with ADHD.

After the QI project was implemented and implemented, the wait times between initial referral and ADHD assessment significantly decreased. This is in line with trust-level goals and reflects the emphasis on enhancing efficiency and capacity across the CAMHS system. The team employed a change model and Plan-Do–Study–Act cycles to drive positive changes in the ADHD pathway.

A diagnosis of ADHD may also help you obtain an Education, Health and Care Plan for your child. The EHCP allows schools to provide additional assistance for your children including training and medication. Our CAMHS ADHD clinic can offer support and guidance for children suffering from ADHD.
