Executive function (EF) is associated with obesity development and self-management. Individuals who demonstrate or self-report poorer EF performance tend to have poorer short-term outcomes in obesity treatment. There may be distinct behavioral self-management strategies and EF domains related to initial weight loss as compared to weight loss maintenance.
To characterize EF in individuals who achieved clinically significant weight loss via behavioral intervention and examine potential differences in EF between those who maintained versus regained lost weight.
Participants who previously achieved ≥5% weight loss via lifestyle intervention were included (
= 44). "Maintainers" (
= 16) maintained this minimum level of weight loss for ≥1 year. "Regainers" (
= 28) regained some or all initially lost weight. Performance-based EF, intelligence quotient, health literacy, depression, anxiety, binge eating, demographics, and medical/weight history were assessed using a cross-sectional design. Descriptive statty who achieved clinically significant weight loss via behavioral intervention had average to above average EF. Individuals who maintained (vs. regained) their lost weight performed better on tests of decision-making.
The percentage of Hispanics in a county has a negative association with prevalence of obesity. Because Hispanic individuals are unevenly distributed in the United States, this study examined whether this protective association persists when stratifying counties into quartiles based on the size of the Hispanic population and after adjusting for county-level demographic, socioeconomic, healthcare, and environmental factors.
Data were extracted from the 2018 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation County Health Rankings. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/sc-43.html Counties were categorized into quartiles based on their percentage of Hispanics, 0%-5% (
= 1794), 5%-20% (
= 962), 20%-50% (
= 283), and >50% (
= 99). For each quartile, univariate and multivariate regression models were used to evaluate the association between prevalence of obesity and demographic, socioeconomic, healthcare, and environmental factors.
Counties with the top quartile of Hispanic individuals had the lowest prevalence of obesity compared to counties at the bottom quartile (28.4 ± 3.6% vs. 32.7 ± 4.0%). There was a negative association between county-level percentage of Hispanics and prevalence of obesity in unadjusted analyses that persisted after adjusting for all county-level factors.
Counties with a higher percentage of Hispanics have lower levels of obesity, even after controlling for demographic, socioeconomic, healthcare, and environmental factors. More research is needed to elucidate why having more Hispanics in a county may be protective against county-level obesity.

Obesity is associated with reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Outcomes of nonsurgical weight loss treatment on HRQoL are inconsistent and it is unclear how much weight reduction, or what type of treatment, is required for significant improvements. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a lifestyle intervention program on weight, eating behaviors, and HRQoL, and to describe participants' experiences of treatment.
This 2-year intervention trial in persons with class II or III obesity comprised a 3-month liquid low-energy diet (880 kcal/d) followed by a 3-month reintroduction to regular foods, combined with behavioral group treatment.
Fifty-five participants (73% women) were included, mean (SD) age 43.2 (12.4) years, and mean body mass index 42.0 (6.0) kg/m
. Mean weight loss at 6, 12, and 24 months was 18.9%, 13.7%, and 7.2%, respectively. Short- and long-term effects on eating behavior were favorable. Twelve of 14 HRQoL domains were improved at 6 months, compared to eight domains at 12effect on psychosocial functioning is most likely related to both weight loss and behavioral treatment.COVID-19 has rapidly spread across the globe and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). The COVID-19 infection continues to spread across Africa. In Africa, mobile phone applications have been used for the surveillance and reporting of infectious diseases such as malaria, measles, polio, and other notifiable diseases as mandated by the WHO. A good example is the early warning alert and response system. We developed an eight-question triage tool using the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control surveillance case definitions for new coronavirus disease. Based on the assessed risk level we offered advice and guidance on the next steps. A user-administered tool such as this is vital to COVID19 control. It is also significant in relieving the burden on health systems, providing information on national health guidelines for prevention and control, fostering the participation of citizens, and giving them the next steps, pandemic control efforts become more effective.
Chronic pain is a common and distressing symptom reported by patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Clinical practice and research in this area do not appear to be advancing sufficiently to address the issue of chronic pain management in patients with CKD.
To determine the prevalence and severity of chronic pain in patients with CKD.
Systematic review and meta-analysis.
Interventional and observational studies presenting data from 2000 or later. Exclusion criteria included acute kidney injury or studies that limited the study population to a specific cause, symptom, and/or comorbidity.
Adults with glomerular filtration rate (GFR) category 3 to 5 CKD including dialysis patients and those managed conservatively without dialysis.
Data extracted included title, first author, design, country, year of data collection, publication year, mean age, stage of CKD, prevalence of pain, and severity of pain.
Databases searched included MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library, last searched on February 3, 2020.
