Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment by adding new affixes. They can also boost the base stats of the item or provide additional benefits. To upgrade item s, the player must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Upgrade components


Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into trinkets, weapons, armor and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or additional effect when the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, gathered in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as rewards from missions or chests. Some upgrades additionally have special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain point before they are upgraded.

To upgrade the quality of a weapon or piece armor, the player must select it and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. The preview will appear on the right side of the screen showing what the expected upgrade statistics will be as well as the necessary component or material needed to complete the upgrade.

There are three types of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, are able to be used in any kind of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks and each item is able to be upgraded so many times before it is "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, but the materials needed do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few items and maximize the effect of these items, rather than dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

This will allow the item to receive upgraded components and a greater chance of success. This bonus is known as Artisan's Energy. It resets at 0 if the upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.

Once a piece is upgraded to its maximum level it is able to receive affixes that will enhance its capabilities. The amount of affixes available will depend on the item's type. Each upgrade step will require a specific amount of Flightstones or Crests, depending on whether the item is at its current level, and in which slot it is in. In general, weapons will require more Flightstones to upgrade than other types of equipment.

If an item fails to get to its maximum level, the NPC will give the player the option of transfer it to another character and then re-infuse it with another set of upgrades. This procedure can take as long as two hours, and costs the same amount of materials. However, it has a lower chance of success.
