Upgrades can give you an increase in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also boosts a random substat.

Upgrades can cost more based on the item level, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for tools, armor, weapon, and accessory upgrades. Players can purchase them from item upgraders NPCs in a variety of currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will display the preview of an item's next level of upgrade, if there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot of the item and the current item level. For instance weapons are more expensive than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currency types.

Item upgraders can be found in many places including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of getting an entirely new recipe. The discount for upgrading increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Crests

Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.


First, you must be aware that the crests can only be purchased for equipment that is with a certain rank. Each rank has a different upgrade path. The new currency system isn't complicated to use, however it does bring some changes to the upgrade process. When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This is to allow players to get their equipment to the highest level possible for all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests only have one usage, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear you can find and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is especially applicable to items like trinkets and rings that fill multiple slots. The discount on the account is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
