They can also alter the appearance of an item. While some upgrades are universal, others have special rules for applying to armor or weapons. As a general rule it is possible to upgrade the equipment you have to the level of its highest-level counterpart. You can only upgrade helms up to the highest level. For example Garnet Pebble (gemstone) and an Adorned Garnet Jewel (jewel) both offer a boost to strength, but the Garnet Pebble will only increase the number of hits that are regular, while the Garnet Jewel also boosts the player's powerful attacks. Jewels can be placed in all armor, weapon and accessory slots. They can also be used with exotic trinkets or lower rarity trinkets that require the use of a slot.

Gems are a specific mechanic for DMs that allows items to feel special to their owners.
