ADHD Traits in Women
Verywell Health acknowledges that sex and gender are a reflection of biology, the hormonal makeup of the body and its chromosomal makeup. It also acknowledges that many people do not belong to a sex binary. Sexe and gender can affect the way ADHD symptoms are treated and diagnosed.
ADHD is usually diagnosed in childhood prior to the age of 12. ADHD symptoms must be present before the age of 12 and cause problems in multiple settings to be able to receive a diagnosis.
1. Trouble focusing
Inattention is the core of ADHD, and it's an issue for everyone. However, women may have more difficulty to attain the focus they need, especially because symptoms often manifest differently in men.
Women are more likely than men to be unorganized and impulsive, as an example. They also are more likely to become emotional and have trouble putting things in perspective. These issues can lead to an inability to concentrate which can lead to an absence of productivity at work or at home. They are also more likely to skip doctor appointments and forget to take their medications.
The hormones that women experience along with these inherent differences, can cause ADHD symptoms. Females have a bigger hippocampus, which helps with learning and memory, and hormonal changes during menstrual cycles as well as during pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopausal cycles can affect brain function.
Women with undiagnosed ADHD may struggle in their relationships, at school, and at work. They may also be struggling with a variety of comorbid disorders, including depression, anxiety eating disorders, bipolar disorder.
It is important that health professionals understand the many signs females suffering from ADHD display. They must recalibrate their approaches for diagnosing and treating females with ADHD in order to take into account emotional dysregulation and hormonal fluctuations. Patients can then receive the treatment they require.
2. Impulsivity
Females with ADHD are more likely to have trouble controlling their emotions, especially when they interact with other people. This can cause to emotional dysregulation that is a component of ADHD symptoms. It can also be linked to negative life outcomes. This includes low self-esteem, co-occurring depression and anxiety, difficult relationships with loved ones which can lead to intimate partner violence, trouble with friendships, a messy house or personal space, and an inability to manage time or money.
The gender stereotypes of women can influence how women who suffer from ADHD will be treated. Because they are typically perceived as being more sensitive or susceptible to mood swings, they may be misunderstood or dismissed as being emotionally prone. adhd in older women about living with untreated ADHD.
The impulse control portion of the brain, also known as the prefrontal cortex is affected in people with ADHD. This means they have a harder time making decisions and following through with their intentions. This can make it difficult to resist the temptation to eat a second piece of cake or to make an inappropriate comment in public.
For people who suffer from ADHD, medication can help to improve their ability to control their behavior. stimulants like amphetamine and dextroamphetamine can reduce the impulsive behavior. Nonstimulants like clonidine or Guanfacine can also be effective. People with ADHD may also benefit from a treatment called behavioral therapy, which helps them alter their thinking patterns and develop healthier strategies for coping.
Getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and practicing meditation can also help in reducing impulsiveness and restlessness in people with ADHD. It's important to keep track of their symptoms throughout the day and to share the information with their doctor to assess whether their treatment plan is working.
3. Disorganization
Disorganization is a common problem in people with ADHD, and can affect their work and personal lives. It may take longer to complete tasks, and decrease their productivity. They might also be late and become overwhelmed on a daily basis.
A lack of organization can cause problems in maintaining healthy relationships. They might not remember important dates or even lose items like keys or purses. They might feel lonely and isolated because of this. They may also feel unloved by family members and friends. Disorganization is more common during menopausal or perimenopausal cycles when hormones are changing and symptoms become more severe.
It is not unusual for women to mask their ADHD symptoms in order to conform with society's norms and avoid being judged. This can cause women to blame themselves and feel guilt or shame. It can also be the reason girls and women are typically not diagnosed with ADHD particularly during adolescence, when symptoms are more obvious.
In the end, women with untreated ADHD might have poor work or school performance. This can impact their work, grades or their overall image. This could also cause issues for their personal life. For example, it may lead to difficulties with relationships with their partners or breakups with family and friends.
Women who are constantly disorganized will benefit from the one-on-1 support of a non-judgmental friend. They can teach women how to stay organized by creating a list and setting reminders. A qualified mental health professional could recommend medication or lifestyle changes that can aid in reducing ADHD symptoms. This can include eating small frequent meals to maintain energy levels and avoiding caffeine that can increase side effects of stimulant medication.
4. Indecisiveness
Indecisiveness can affect decision-making in many aspects of daily life. Indecisiveness can be measured with several instruments, including the Decision Behaviors Inventory by Barkley-Levenson and Fox and the scale of Indecisiveness. Indecisiveness can also be linked to neuroticism and the tendency to use worst case scenario thinking, in which people interpret ambiguous situations as potentially dangerous. It was also found to be related to a fear of making a mistake which could be the reason people suffering from adhd have difficulty making decisions.
In the qualitative study of adult women suffering from adhd who were interviewed, they described not being in a position to make decisions regarding their personal and professional lives. They struggled to find an occupation they enjoyed or to stay in, and also found it difficult to manage their finances, relationships and health. adhd in older women waited for others to take decisions, or were unable complete projects such as organizing childcare. They believed that their ADHD symptoms like the inability to focus and impulsivity, or getting started on projects were preventing them from progressing.
They had difficulty in establishing and maintaining friendships which resulted in mental health issues. They described stress and anxiety, a sleep deprivation and inadequate nutrition. They also reported feeling snubbed by other adults and by the media. The diagnosis of ADHD provided them with a reason for their struggles which was beneficial for self-esteem because it meant they were not blamed for their own problems. They also had access to appropriate treatment strategies.
The interviews revealed that women were very optimistic, but struggled to overcome the effects of ADHD in different areas of their lives. The women reported an absence in their careers or romantic opportunities, issues maintaining relationships, and a messy house.
5. Self-esteem issues
Some of the symptoms that comprise ADHD are viewed as less socially acceptable for girls and women than they are for males and females, so some women are able to hide their impulsivity, hyperactivity, and disorganization. They also may take on their ADHD symptoms and develop coping mechanisms such as self-harm (cutting or burning, or scratching). This can lead to low self-esteem, which could cause depression, anxiety or eating disorders.
Having high inner worth is a key factor in better relationships and a more positive outlook on life. People who lack a strong self-worth tend to look beyond themselves for validation, such as jobs, relationships, money, and power. Licensed therapist Cheryl Clarke says this can result in an absence of communication in relationships, which could eventually end it.
In addition to a sense of self-worth, those with ADHD often have the feeling that they don't have enough of the good things in their lives. These feelings can manifest as a desire for others to "keep up with" or to please. This can lead to an unhealthy work environment and a negative image of the body and an addiction to food or substances.
While these are serious issues however, the women who took part in this study discovered many positive aspects of living with ADHD. They described ADHD as positive or negative according to the way they perceive their ability to control it. Some of them have identified their own strengths that they believe are due to their ADHD. These include the ability to be creative, energetic and determination as well as the ability to easily get fascinated by new subjects. They also discuss their own struggles within the context of the larger picture, which includes biological and gender distinctions, as well as cultural and family issues.
