Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are an integral part of uPVC frames and must be matched to the frame that is currently in use. The most important factor is the spindle's length which determines if your new uPVC handle will fit.
Use the table below as a quick guide to determine the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will assist you in determining the select the proper window handle replacement for your double-glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are the most commonly used design of handle used on upvc windows (they're also commonly used in timber and aluminium too). The handles have a square spindle which extends from the handle's back and locks into the multi-point locking mechanism that is on the window. By turning the handle you operate the system that locks and unlocks the locking points around the window.
Espag window handles are available in many different styles and functions. Some have a push button for the locking position to be locked and key-locking. (And nonlocking for fire escape when required.) Many of them meet the Secure by Design specification to provide an extra level of security. They also come with a range of different spindle lengths which can be adjusted by using spindle sleeves that reduce the size of the protruding spindle.
Yale has tested the espagnolette handles that we provide to ensure that they meet all the standards you would expect. They work with windows made of upvc as well as timber windows and frames made of aluminium. We offer a variety of colors, and can match the handle to your existing hinges.
Another important feature of espagnolette handles is their step height. This is the distance from the end of the handle to the point where it is placed on the frame, and it's crucial to make sure it's right in order to ensure a tight and secure fit. Fortunately, the majority of our handles conform to industry standard with 43mm between screw hole centres.
Like other types of handles you can choose between straight and Cranked designs. Cranked handles are perfect for situations where the espagnolette handle will be placed close to the frame's edge as they can give you more clearance for opening the window.
Our upvc replacement handle range offers a wide range of styles, finishes and colors to match your home's decor, including polished chrome, antique brass and satin nickel. Some of our products feature a soft-close system to reduce the sound that windows create when they shut.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle made specifically for the fabricator who wants to offer their customers a stylish and high quality design. These handles work with either uPVC or aluminium windows and function by incorporating an edge which locks onto the frame's edge to secure the window. The window handle can be locked so that it opens only when pushed, providing additional security. The handle is available in five different finishes, both left and right handed. This allows fabricators to accommodate more windows.
The cockspur window handles come provided with 3 packing pieces of different thickness, which allows them to be adjusted for a wide range of backset sizes. Each packer can be removed from the handle nose or added to the size of the step to get a different distance between 9mm and 21mm. The handle comes in both left and right handed models, with straight or curved nose options.
If you are looking for a replacement for your existing cockspur handles, it's important to measure the current handle's height in order to make sure that the new handle is appropriate for the position. The wrong handle could cause a myriad of issues, including the inability of the window to be closed. This can be a hassle for homeowners and create unnecessary stress.
A cockspur handle is that is found on older uPVC wood, aluminium and timber windows. These handles don't have windows with integrated locks in contrast to the Espag handles that are used on modern windows and include shootbolts or an Espagnolette bar lock.
The espagnolette (often reduced to 'espag') handle is the most common type of handle that is found on the latest uPVC casement windows. When you turn the espagnolette handle it opens the Yale Encloser locking system which is more secure than a conventional cockspur or british standard handle. This is because the espagnolette handle turns multiple locks to secure the window frame.
Handle with Tilt and Turn
These windows are a very popular choice for homeowners who want to improve the ventilation within their home, as well as offering an additional level of security. Like their name suggests windows with tilt and turn feature. tilt and turn feature that lets them tilt at 90 degrees, which allows for the appearance of a small opening, or drop down to a hopper-style for full ventilation. The dual functionality gives them an attractive appearance which can enhance the appeal of your double glazed windows.
Tilt-and-turn windows are more complex than other double-glazed window designs that can increase the cost of installation. They require more components and a lot of labor. These windows are worth the investment because they bring value and offer many advantages to your home.
One of the main benefits is that they permit you to clean windows from inside without the need for ladders outside. This is ideal for people who live in high-rise structures or flats since it eliminates the necessity to walk outside and risk falling from an elevated high height. Tilt and turn windows offer added security as the window locks when in a tilted or turned position which means that intruders who want to get inside cannot open them from inside.
Usually, you'll find these handles typically on European style windows, particularly those in Germany however, you can also find them installed in UK homes. The uPVC handle replacement is usually one that is based on a spindle. It has a 7mm spindle which is available in lengths of 38mm, 44mm, and 32mm. The base of the handle is usually wider than other handles, which is the reason they are referred to as a 'tilt safe' window handle since it is only able to be turned to open the window after it has been locked in either a closed or tilt position.
If you are replacing a uPVC tilt and turn window handle, it is necessary to take the handle off the window using the screwdriver. The screws are usually hidden behind a backplate that is sprung loaded. Simply lift the backplate and twist it to reveal two screw holes. You can measure the distance between the two screw holes with an instrument such as a ruler or tape measurement device. This will usually be 43mm from centre to center. Once you have the measurement you can then order the right handle size to match your uPVC windows.
Aluminium Handle
Diecast aluminum is finished with a stylish matt black colour.
Typically made from corrosion resistant and weatherproof alloys, the handle of aluminum is strong enough to meet the requirements of the construction industry. content can also be shaped easily by industrial metal processing processes such as forging, extrusion and casting. This gives it a high degree of flexibility with nearly endless design possibilities.
Additionally, aluminium is extremely durable and has a great strength-to-weight ratio. It is able to withstand the harshest of conditions. Furthermore, it is resistant to the ultraviolet radiation that can harm it and is therefore safe to indoor use. It's also extremely versatile and can be colored to fit any aesthetic. From traditional emulations of hardware metals to vibrant applications that use hundreds of pure colors The possibilities are endless.
Aluminum isn't rusty and doesn't require any maintenance. It is protected by an oxide layer naturally present. The protective layer can be strengthened by a variety of methods, like powder coating or anodizing to offer additional resistance to corrosion. It can last for decades without the need for routine maintenance or cleaning. It is also 100% recyclable and sustainable. This makes it an ideal choice for residential, commercial industrial, and residential structures. It is also fire-safe and has a high thermal efficiency.
