Check Out The Door Handle Replacement Tricks That The Celebs Are Utilizing
Door Handle Replacement

It's worth replacing door handles if you don't like the way they look or if they're difficult to use. Installing the new handle on your door is easy if you have patience.

The majority of modern door handles come with cover plates that conceal the screws for an attractive appearance. However, you'll have to attach them separately if the new handle does not have them attached already.

Remove the handle that was previously used

Door handles are not only essential for aesthetics of your home, but they're also vital for safety since they allow you to lock and unlock your door. Over time, the door handle may become loose or feel loose. It might be beginning to appear old and worn. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace the door handle.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is an issue because it means you can not lock or unlock your door which could be the risk of security for you and your family.

It is also an excellent idea to replace your door handle if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be risky, particularly for elderly and children members who may struggle to open it. They could become trapped. It's simple to replace a broken handle on the door.

Most modern door handles are a standard size, so they should fit any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will work, try removing the old one and determining the holes in its housing. This will allow you to purchase the correct size door handle.

The most straightforward method to take off your old door handle is to remove it from the door itself. This is usually done with a screw driver. However, some door handles have a cover plate that conceals the mounting screws, so you'll need to remove this to reach the screws beneath. After removing the handle that was previously used, take note of the way the spindle is connected. This will assist you in aligning the new handle.

You can also remove the door handle by removing the latch mechanism. This is typically done with a screwdriver but you'll need to find the small latch, which should be just to the left of the trim piece. After removing the latch, unscrew the handle and the strike plate. Then, you can remove the latch from the edge of the door.

Remove the Strike Plate

When you replace the handle, you'll want to replace the latch plate that holds the hole that the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The new handles will have two latch plates that are circular and rectangular plate (see the above diagram which shows the various parts of a door handle). If you have an old rectangular latch plate, swap it with a round one. This will let the latch hook onto the strike plate, making the handle easier to use.

The first step is to remove the screw that is holding the latch plate that was previously in place. The screws can be very tight and will require some force to loosen. If you are able, it could be beneficial to have a second person assist you with this task.

The latch plate should lift itself out of the door once the screws have been removed. If it is stuck or doesn't move then use a small nail file to scrape the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Attach the latch plate to the door jamb using the screws that were included with the new handles. Do not tighten the screws too much as this can cause damage to the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and open the door to check whether it locks and closes properly. If not you'll have to adjust the strikeplate either up or down, forward or back until the door locks properly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you might need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common in older doors, however it can happen due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are too narrow or are not sized correctly for the latch, or due to a broken or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation you can use a metal file instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Remove the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into a hole in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door wobbles when you close it, replacing the latch could be all you need to fix the issue.

The screws that secure the door latch are difficult to see however, you can put a screwdriver in a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to take off the latch and the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle.

If the latch is not easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the latch's slot that is recessed and gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. It may take this several times before the latch is loose enough to pull out.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot with no issues after you've removed the old one. Make use of the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's correctly positioned in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Also, ensure that the size of the latch on the new handle matches the measurement of your existing handle.

You'll require a new lock cylinder if you're replacing the handle and latch or your existing one is damaged. If you're not changing locks the new lock will fit inside the recess you have already installed, and work with your current keys. Select a latch with rectangular cover plates to match your old handles.

Removal of the Cover Plate

Door handles can begin to look shabby over time, but if you replace them with a contemporary lever-on-rose designs, it's an easy and quick DIY project and decorating idea that will enhance the overall appearance of your home. You can buy complete sets of door handles that come with the appropriate escutcheons and privacy adjustor kits.

To replace an internal door handle remove the cover plate (or rose) that covers the screws and mechanism. Use a flathead to remove the cover plate. It could have a slot along one edge or be held in place by pins.

Once the cover plate is off take off the screw that holds the interior handle in place, and then set it aside. You'll also need to remove the screws that are holding the latch and plates to the door, which you can accomplish by loosening them using the help of a Philips screwdriver. Then, take the inner plates and latch plate from the door and put them aside.

Not all doors have this gap. If yours doesn't then you'll have to drill a hole into the door to accommodate the new handle. It's the same procedure for opening a locked door, but you will need to be extra careful not to scratch the door or frame.

After the holes are drilled then you'll need to install new door knob screws. Buy the same size as the old screws to ensure that you don't get a handle that is too loose or tight. Installing a new strike rod and latch is also necessary. These aren't included in the majority of door handle sets.
