Viewing self-video during videoconferences potentially causes negative self-focused attention that contributes to virtual meeting (VM) or "Zoom" fatigue. The present research examines this proposition, focusing on facial dissatisfaction-feeling unhappy about one's own facial appearance-as a potential psychological mechanism of VM fatigue. A study of survey responses from a panel of 613 adults found that VM fatigue was 14.9 percent higher for women than for men, and 11.1 percent higher for Asian than for White participants. These gender and race/ethnicity differences were found to be mediated by facial dissatisfaction. This study replicates earlier VM fatigue research, extends the theoretical understanding of facial dissatisfaction as a psychological mechanism of VM fatigue, and suggests that practical approaches to mitigating VM fatigue could include implementing technological features that reduce self-focused attention during VMs (e.g., employing avatars).
The exposure-response association between prenatal and postnatal household air pollution (HAP) and infant growth trajectories is unknown.

Higher early life HAP exposure (during pregnancy and through the first year of life) was associated with poorer infant growth trajectories among children in rural Ghana. A cleaner-burning stove intervention may have improved some growth trajectories. https//doi.org/10.1289/EHP8109.

In this work, we evaluated whether glycemic variability induces cardiac fibrosis through regulating cardiac fibroblast activation and macrophage polarization. Moreover, we determined whether glucose transporter sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) plays an important role in this process. Glycemic variability-induced mice were established using DM mice (GVDM mice), and intermittent high-glucose (IHG) treatment was used to simulate glycemic variability in RAW264.7 macrophages and cardiac fibroblasts. The short hairpin RNA for SGLT1 was used to knock down SGLT1. The results showed that glycemic variability aggravated the cardiac fibrosis in GVDM mice. Additionally, glycemic variability promoted the expression of fibrogenic cytokine and the extracellular matrix proteins in left ventricular tissues and cardiac fibroblasts. GVDM mice showed a higher incidence of macrophage infiltration and M1 polarization in left ventricular tissues. Moreover, IHG-promoted RAW264.7 macrophages tended to differentiate to M1 phenotype. SGLT1 knockdown alleviated cardiac fibrosis in GVDM mice and inhibited activations of cardiac fibroblast and macrophage M1 polarization. Our results indicated that glycemic variability aggravates cardiac fibrosis through activating cardiac fibroblast and macrophage M1 polarization, which could be partially inhibited by SGLT1 knockdown. Background The updated Lymphedema Life Impact Scale (LLIS, version 2) has been widely used to evaluate the effect of lymphedema from the patient's perspective. We sought to assess its ability to accurately and efficiently measure lymphedema-related impact using modern psychometric techniques. Methods and Results We collected a total of 1054 patient-reported outcome measure scores from 285 patients with upper extremity lymphedema and 65 patients with lower extremity lymphedema between 2016 and 2020. We first evaluated the relationship between the LLIS score, L-Dex score, and limb volume difference (LVD), and used classical test and item response theories to assess its psychometric performance. The LLIS score was only very weakly associated with LVD (r = 0.17, p  less then  0.001) and L-Dex score (r = 0.22, p  less then  0.001). The LLIS had acceptable dimensionality. Items 7 (affects body image) and 16 (affects proper fit of clothing/shoes) were locally dependent (Yen's Q3 = 0.45). Eight of the 17 items was interpreted differently between upper and lower limb lymphedema patients (pseudo R2 ≥ 0.01). The scoring structure required correction for items 9 (affects intimate relations) and 12 (manages lymphedema). Removing items 18 (infection occurrence) and 7 resulted in substantially improved item response theory model fit (Tucker-Lewis index = 0.93, comparative fix index = 0.95, root mean square error of approximation = 0.07, and root means square of the residual = 0.06). The relationships between the LLIS and objective measures of lymphedema remained weak following modification (LVD; r = 0.13, p = 0.01, L-Dex; r = 0.26, p  less then  0.001). Conclusion We were able to slightly improve the psychometric properties of the LLIS. However, these improvements did not rectify apparent issues with construct validity and both versions of the LLIS displayed a weak relationship with objective measures of lymphedema severity.Colloidal CdSe quantum rings (QRs) are a recently developed class of nanomaterials with a unique topology. In nanocrystals with more common shapes, such as dots and platelets, the photophysics is consistently dominated by strongly bound electron-hole pairs, so-called excitons, regardless of the charge carrier density. Here, we show that charge carriers in QRs condense into a hot uncorrelated plasma state at high density. Through strong band gap renormalization, this plasma state is able to produce broadband and sizable optical gain. The gain is limited by a second-order, yet radiative, recombination process, and the buildup is counteracted by a charge-cooling bottleneck. Our results show that weakly confined QRs offer a unique system to study uncorrelated electron-hole dynamics in nanoscale materials.β-Substituted acrylamides have low electrophilicity and are yet to be exploited in the enantioselective Rauhut-Currier reaction. By exploiting electron-withdrawing protection of the amide and moderate nucleophilicity N-heterocyclic carbenes, such substrates have been converted to enantioenriched quinolones. The reaction proceeds with complete diastereoselectivity, good yield, and modest enantioselectivity. Derivatizations are reported, as are computational studies, supporting decreased amide bond character with electron-withdrawing protection of the nitrogen. Here, we evaluated the feasibility of non-prodrug PEG-drug conjugates to decrease the accumulation of drugs within the placental tissues. The results showed that PEG was biocompatible with the human placenta with no alteration of the basal rate of proliferation or apoptosis in term placental explants. No significant changes in the released levels of lactate dehydrogenase and the human chorionic gonadotropin were observed after PEG treatment. The cellular uptake studies revealed that conjugating Cy5.5 and haloperidol to PEG significantly reduced (by up to ∼40-fold) their uptake by the placenta. These findings highlight the viability of novel non-prodrug polymer-drug conjugates to avoid the accumulation of drugs within the placenta.Resistive switching random access memory (RRAM), also known as memristor, is regarded as an emerging nonvolatile memory and computing-in-memory technology to address the intrinsic physical limitations of conventional memory and the bottleneck of von Neumann architecture. selleck products In particular, halide perovskite RRAMs have attracted widespread attention in recent years because of their ionic migration nature and excellent photoelectric properties. This Perspective first provides a condensed overview of halide perovskite RRAMs based on materials, device performance, switching mechanism, and potential applications. Moreover, this Perspective attempts to detail the challenges, such as the quality of halide perovskite films, the compatible processing of device fabrication, the reliability of memory performance, and clarification of the switching mechanism, and further discusses how the outstanding challenges of halide perovskite RRAMs could be met in future research.Arabinoxylans (AXs) are widely distributed in various cereal grains, such as wheat, corn, rye, barley, rice, and oat. The AX molecule contains a linear (1,4)-β-D-xylp backbone substituted by α-L-araf units and occasionally t-xylp and t-glcpA through α-(1,2) and/or α-(1,3) glycosidic linkages. Arabinoxylan shows diversified functional and bioactive properties, influenced by their molecular mass, branching degree, ferulic acid (FA) content, and the substitution position and chain length of the side chains. This Review summarizes the extraction methods for various cereal sources, compares their structural features and functional/bioactive properties, and highlights the established structure-function/bioactivity relationships, intending to explore the potential functions of AXs and their industrial applications. We describe the Mass Spectrometry Adduct Calculator (MSAC), an automated Python tool to calculate the adduct ion masses of a parent molecule. Here, adduct refers to a version of a parent molecule [M] that is charged due to addition or loss of atoms and electrons resulting in a charged ion, for example, [M + H]+. MSAC includes a database of 147 potential adducts and adduct/neutral loss combinations and their mass-to-charge ratios (m/z) as extracted from the NIST/EPA/NIH Mass Spectral Library (NIST17), Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking Public Spectral Libraries (GNPS), and MassBank of North America (MoNA). The calculator relies on user-selected subsets of the combined database to calculate expected m/z for adducts of molecules supplied as formulas. This tool is intended to help researchers create identification libraries to collect evidence for the presence of molecules in mass spectrometry data. While the included adduct database focuses on adducts typically detected during liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses, users may supply their own lists of adducts and charge states for calculating expected m/z.
