Finding a cost-effective adsorbent can be an obstacle to large-scale applications of adsorption. This study used an efficient activated carbon adsorbent based on agro-waste for dye removal.
Pistachio shells as abundant local agro-wastes were used to prepare activated carbon. Then, it was modified with iron to improve its characteristics. Acid red 14 was used as a model dye in various conditions of adsorption (AR14 concentration 20-150 mg L
, pH 3-10, adsorbent dosage 0.1-0.3 g L
, and contact time 5-60 min).
A mesoporous adsorbent was prepared from pistachio shells with 811.57 m
g
surface area and 0.654 cm
g
pore volume. Iron modification enhanced the characteristics of activated carbon (surface area by 33.3% and pore volume by 64.1%). Adsorption experiments showed the high effectiveness of iron-modified activated carbon for AR14 removal (>99%, >516 mg g
). The adsorption followed the pseudo-second kinetic model (k = 0.0005 g mg
min
) and the Freundlich isotherm model (K
= 152.87, n = 4.61). Besides, the reaction occurred spontaneously (ΔG
= -36.65 to -41.12 kJ mol
) and was exothermic (ΔH
= -41.86 kJ mol
and ΔS
= -3.34 J mol
K
).
Iron-modified activated carbon derived from pistachio shells could be cost-effective for the treatment of industrial wastewater containing dyes.

Smart lens is a magnifying device that turns the smartphone into a microscopic exploring instrument. It is a convenient and inexpensive tool as an on-site evaluation device for the kidney biopsy specimen. We demonstrate the benefit of using a handheld smartphone microscope compared to the standard procedure in allograft kidney specimens.
This was a cohort study of allograft kidney biopsies performed between June 2015 and November 2017 in Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. Selleck Bay K 8644 The clinical utility of the "Chula smart lens" applied to the smartphone as an on-site evaluation device was studied. Clinical data, diagnostic quality, and complications were retrospectively reviewed and compared between the smart lens group and the standard group.
The study cohort consisted of 93 allograft kidney biopsies (standard47, smart lens46). The mean age was 40.6 (18-48) years, and 63 patients (67.7%) were male. By using the smart lens device, the number of obtained tissue cores was higher (3.5 vs 2.9, p = 0.019) and the inadequacy rate for diagnosis was significantly lower (7% vs 21.3%, p = 0.05).
Using a handheld smartphone microscope as an on-site evaluation device resulted in more positive glomeruli and diagnostic yield compared to the standard procedure.

The fruit reported as indispensable source of phytochemicals and health imparting components. However, the phytochemicals constituents, antioxidant activities and fatty acid profile of Ethiopian X. americana cultivar studies are still scarce. This research aimed at evaluation of flesh and seed of Ethiopian X. americana yellow and red colored cultivars for bioactive component, antioxidant activities, fatty acid profiles and physicochemical characteristics. The red fruit flesh had higher total phenol (3292.60 mg GAE/100 g) while yellow fruit flesh showed higher total flavonoid (173.95 mg quercetin/100g). The higher DPPH∗ radical scavenging activity (97%) was observed in red fruit flesh due to its higher phenolic content. The yellow X. americana seed (90.69 mg QE/100g) had higher total flavonoid contents than the red seed (18.64 mg QE/100g). The dominant unsaturated fatty acid found in red X. americana flesh was oleic acid (26.29%), and the main saturated fatty acid detected was palmitic acid (29.78%). The seed also had high unsaturated fatty acid which was elaidic acid, (84.32%). Ximeninic acid (12.78%) which is expected to be detected in Ximenia americana seed oil was also observed. The highest content of fat (52.23%) and protein (16.59%) was obtained in yellow fruit seed and the lowest fat content observed in yellow flesh (7.25%). Most abundant minerals were calcium (42.45-49.55 mg/100g) and manganese (26.73-33.92 mg/100g) in seeds. Whereas, fleshs displayed higher magnesium (76.3-98.27 mg/100g) and copper (1.35-1.52 mg/100g) contents. The Ethiopian X. americana fruit cultivars represent high nutritional and medicinal values despite variation related to genetic variability.
The role of tumor deposits (TDs) in the staging of gastric cancer is currently debatable. TDs are defined as tumoral nodules in perigastric adipose tissue with no evidence of lymphatic, vascular, or neural structures. Clinicopathological factors related to the presence of TDs are not well defined. This study aimed to identify the clinicopathological factors associated with the presence of TDs in resected gastric cancer patients.
This prospective study included patients diagnosed with gastric cancer and treated with D2 radical gastrectomy from January 2019 to January 2020. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the factors related to the presence of TDs.
A total of 111 patients were eligible and TDs were present in 31 of them (28%). In the univariate analysis, male gender (p = 0.027), tumor size ≥ 5cm (p = ≤0.001), serosa and adjacent organs invasion (pT4a and pT4b) (p = ≤0.001), ≥16 metastatic lymph nodes (pN3b) (p = ≤0.001), and TNM stage III tumors (p = ≤0.001) were significantly associated with the presence of TDs. The multivariate analysis showed that a tumors size ≥5 cm (OR = 3.69, 95% CI 1.17-11.6), serosa and adjacent organs invasion (pT4a and pT4b) (OR = 3.78, 95% CI 1.31-10.86) and ≥16 metastatic lymph nodes (pN3b) (OR = 3.21, 95%CI1.06-9.7) were independent risk factors for the presence of TDs.
Larger tumors (tumor size ≥ 5cm), serosa and adjacent organs invasion (pT4 and pT4b), and ≥16 metastatic lymph nodes (pN3b) were independent risk factors for the presence of TDs.

Dengue fever has been one of the most common mosquito-transmitted diseases in the world, affecting more than 128 countries in both tropical and subtropical regions. Bangladesh has been sufferring from dengue outbreaks almost annually since 2000, and in 2019, Bangladesh faced the worst outbreak of dengue to date. This study aimed to provide clinical and biochemical profiles of Bangladesh's dengue-infected patients.
This cross-sectional study was conducted from August through December 2019 in three tertiary private hospitals in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We collected information on demographic data, clinical characteristics, and laboratory profiles for 542 confirmed hospitalized acute dengue cases using a structured questionnaire.
The average age of the enrolled patients was 26.15 years, and about 50% of patients belonged to the age group of 20-40 years. The most frequent among the prevalent clinical symptoms were fever (93.1%), abdominal pain (29.5%), skin rash (25.3%), and diarrhea (19.7%). 316 patients had sommstantial diagnosis of dengue patients and facilitate early intervention.
In Jordan, research ethics have been subject to increasingly formal regulations and structuring. Recently the Ministry of Higher Education and Research Published the National Research Code of Ethics. However, little is known about the awareness of pharmacology researchers of this code and the extent of its applicability to their research.
Purposeful sampling through institutions' websites was used to identify staff members with excellent profiles from 20 Faculties of Pharmacy in Jordan. After obtaining the required approvals, in-depth interviews were conducted, recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using NVivo 11 Software. The interviews followed a previously prepared and validated interview guide that covered various aspects of education, research, and training.
Eighteen members of staff agreed to take part in the study. Qualitative analysis revealed three main themes each concerning respondents' awareness of the National Code of Research Ethics in Jordan. The emerging themes were the lack of awareness regarding the code of ethics, the need for clear guidelines for pharmacology research in Jordan, and the need for further workshops and training courses for pharmacology researchers.
This study highlights a lack of awareness regarding the presence of the National Research Ethics Code among pharmacology researchers in Jordan. This might have negative implications on medical research. It was thought that the code of ethics should be incorporated in postgraduate pharmacy education, training courses for pharmacy researchers, and workshops for pharmacy academic staff.

As the world accumulates unfathomable volumes of data and health technology grows more and more critical to the advancement of medicine, policymakers and regulators are faced with tough challenges around data security and data privacy. This paper reviews existing regulatory frameworks for artificial intelligence-based medical devices and health data privacy in Bangladesh. The study is legal research employing a comparative approach where data is collected from primary and secondary legal materials and filtered based on policies relating to medical data privacy and medical device regulation of Bangladesh. Such policies are then compared with benchmark policies of the European Union and the USA to test the adequacy of the present regulatory framework of Bangladesh and identify the gaps in the current regulation. The study highlights the gaps in policy and regulation in Bangladesh that are hampering the widespread adoption of big data analytics and artificial intelligence in the industry. Despite the vast benefits that big data would bring to Bangladesh's healthcare industry, it lacks the proper data governance and legal framework necessary to gain consumer trust and move forward. Policymakers and regulators must work collaboratively with clinicians, patients and industry to adopt a new regulatory framework that harnesses the potential of big data but ensures adequate privacy and security of personal data. The article opens valuable insight to regulators, academicians, researchers and legal practitioners regarding the present regulatory loopholes in Bangladesh involving exploiting the promise of big data in the medical field. The study concludes with the recommendation for future research into the area of privacy as it relates to artificial intelligence-based medical devices should consult the patients' perspective by employing quantitative analysis research methodology.
