After transforming to Z-scores, ABSI was the best linear predictor for CVR according to SCORE and ACC/AHA, although WHtR also proved to be good. HI did not associate with the measures of CVR. To review the scientific publications reporting vagal nerve somatosensory-evoked potential (VSEP) findings from individuals with brain disorders, and present novel physiological explanations on the VSEP origin. Methods. We did a systematic review on the papers reporting VSEP findings from individuals with brain disorders and their controls. We evaluated papers published from 2003 to date indexed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scielo databases. We extracted the following information number of patients and controls, type of neural disorder, age, gender, stimulating/recording and grounding electrodes as well as stimulus side, intensity, duration, frequency, and polarity. Information about physiological parameters, neurobiological variables, and correlation studies was also reviewed. Representative vignettes were included to add support to our conclusions. Results. The VSEP was studied in 297 patients with neural disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, mild cognitive impairment, subjective memory impairment, major depression, and multiple sclerosis. Scalp responses marked as the VSEP showed high variability, low validity, and poor reproducibility. VSEP latencies and amplitudes did not correlate with disease duration, unified PD rating scale score, or heart function in PD patients nor with cerebrospinal fluid β amyloid, phosphor-τ, and cognitive tests from patients with mental disorders. Vignettes demonstrated that the VSEP was volume conduction propagating from muscles surrounding the scalp recording electrodes. Conclusion. The VSEP is not a brain-evoked potential of neural origin but muscle activity induced by electrical stimulation of the tragus region of the ear. This review and illustrative vignettes argue against assessing the parasympathetic system using the so-called VSEP.The world of biomedical research has led to several breakthroughs in the treatment of various spinal pathologies. The emerging development of robotic technologies and intelligent carriers are recognized as a promising innovative technique for increasing the efficiency of gene therapy and potentially resolving spinal pathologies.Background Copper oxide nanoparticles doped with nonprecious metal species (Ni and Mn) were synthesized. Method A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified by drop-casting of nanostructure suspensions, constructing NiCu(OH)2/GCE, MnCu(OH)2/GCE and Cu(OH)2/GCE. Results The voltammetric oxidation of dopamine (DA) by the constructed electrodes confirmed that the electrocatalytic oxidation of DA is a reversible, pH-dependent, diffusion-controlled process; the best response was obtained by MnCu(OH)2/GCE. A sensitive calibration graph (0.664 μA/μM) was produced for DA in the concentration range of 0.3-10.0 μM, with a detection limit of 79 nM using MnCu(OH)2/GCE. Conclusion The MnCu(OH)2/GCE possessed an accurate response toward DA with an acceptable selectivity, stability and antifouling effect, revealing the applicability of the MnCu(OH)2/GCE for DA analysis in biological samples.
Burnout in people with diabetes and healthcare professionals (HCPs) is at an all-time high. Spotlight AQ, a novel "smart" adaptive patient questionnaire, is designed to improve consultations by rapidly identifying patient priorities and presenting these in the context of best-practice care pathways to aid consultations. We aimed to determine Spotlight AQ's feasibility in routine care.
The Spotlight prototype tool was trialed at three centers two UK primary care centers and one US specialist center (June-September 2020). Participants with type 1 (T1D) or type 2 diabetes (T2D) completed the questionnaire prior to their routine consultations. Results were immediately available and formed the basis of the clinical discussion and decision-making within the clinic visit.
A convenience sample of 49 adults took part,
=31 T1D, (
=18 female); and
=18 T2D (
=10 male,
=4 female,
=4 gender unreported). Each identified two priority concerns. "Psychological burden of diabetes" was the most common priority concern (T1D
27, 87.1%) followed by "gaining more skills about particular aspects of diabetes" (T1D
=19, 61.3%), "improving support around me" (
=8, 25.8%) and "diabetes-related treatment issues" (
=8, 25.8%). Burden of diabetes was widespread as was lack of confidence around self-management. Similarly, psychological burden of diabetes was the primary concern for participants with T2D (
=18,100%) followed by "gaining more skills about aspects of diabetes" (
=7, 38.9%), "improving support around me" (
=7, 38.9%) and "diabetes-related treatment issues" (
=4; 22.2%).
Spotlight AQ is acceptable and feasible for use in routine care. Gaining more skills and addressing the psychological burden of diabetes are high-priority areas that must be addressed to reduce high levels of distress.
