Gastrointestinal infections (GI) and urological infections (UI) have not been fully addressed in COVID-19 patients. We aimed to evaluate the values of routine fecal occult blood (FOB) test and urinary cytology test (UCT) for screening of GI and UI in COVID-19 patients.

In this retrospective study, COVID-19 patients without associated comorbidities were divided into FOB- or UCT-positive or FOB- or UCT-negative groups. Their clinical characteristics and laboratory findings were then compared.

A total of 13.6% of patients (47 of 345) tested positive for FOB, and 57.4% (27 of 47) of these patients lacked gastrointestinal symptoms. A total of 30.1% of patients (104 of 345) exhibited gastrointestinal symptoms, and 38.0% (131 of 345) were positive for either FOB or gastrointestinal symptoms. FOB-positive patients possessed significantly higher levels of C-reactive protein and fewer lymphocytes than FOB-negative patients. Oxaliplatin A total of 36.9% of patients (80 of 217) exhibited positive UCT, and 97.5% (78 of 80) of these patients possessed normal levels of serum markers for renal injuries. The microsporidia are obligate intracellular pathogenic fungi that parasitize a wide range of invertebrate and vertebrate hosts and have important impacts on health, food security and the economy. In this paper, we focus on Nosema ceranae and N. apis, which chronically infect the digestive tract of honeybees, altering their physiology and lifespan.

We applied matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) for rapid molecular profiling of extracts of Nosema spores in order to identify the species and the geographical origin, and assess the viability status of Nosema microsporidia in conjunction with a flow cytometric approach. Pure solutions of spores were prepared for flow cytometric analysis and MALDI-MS profiling. A mechanical extraction of viable or heat-killed Nosema spores was conducted to obtain mass fingerprints of peptides/proteins for samples of microsporidia from different geographical origins (MBO.NC01, MBO.NC02 and MBO.NA01).

A distinction in the peptide/protein profiles between two isolates with different geographical origins was observed. Mass fingerprints of viable and experimentally killed spores were also clearly distinguishable, regardless of Nosema species. Finally, using our computational models on the different Nosema species, we were able to classify five independent isolates of Nosema microsporidia.

We have shown that MALDI-MS is a rapid, cost-effective and simple method for identifying Nosema species. We demonstrated that MALDI Biotyping could represent a valuable surveillance tool of nosemosis in apiaries for sanitary services and beekeepers.

A grant-funded faculty development program, From Practice to Preceptor (FP2P), sought to recruit and train diverse general and pediatric dentists to become dental faculty from 2012-2018. This study is an evaluation of this completed initiative and offers an initial review of long-term outcomes of the program.

Over 5 entering cohorts, 133 practitioners applied to the program and 45 were accepted. A 2-year training program used classroom and hands-on training to prepare practitioners for the occupational demands of academia. Program participants were offered pre- and post-surveys to evaluate their perceived preparedness in faculty competencies identified by the program. Participants were also sent an alumni survey, and employment was tracked by the host institution.

Most (43 of 45) participants completed the program. Pre- and post-survey results were received from 24 of 30 (80%) participants in Cohorts 2, 3, and 5, and used for this analysis. The results suggest the program participants' perception of their ability to work effectively as faculty members in administrative, teaching, and clinical arenas increased. Over half of the program completers obtained employment as dental faculty. A majority of (19/26, 73%) program completers who responded to the alumni survey indicated the skills and knowledge gained in the program were useful to their current employment.

The SOS pathway genes SOS1 (Na+ /H+ antiporter), SOS2 (CIPK), and SOS3 (CBL) associated with ion homeostasis were isolated and characterized in the sugarcane clone Co 85019. The isolated genes had a coding region of 1086, 904, and 636 bp, respectively. A nucleotide blast analysis of the isolated SOS gene sequences showed strong similarity with previous genes found to be involved in the active functioning of the SOS pathway for ion homeostasis conferring salinity tolerance in sugarcane. The analysis of tissue specific gene expression of the identified SOS genes revealed a significant linear increase in the leaves under the first 96 h of salt stress (2.5- to 21.6-fold) in the tolerant genotype Co 85019, while the expression in the roots showed a linear increase up to 48 h and thereafter a gradual decline. The expression of SOS genes in the susceptible genotype (Co 97010) was significantly lower than in the tolerant genotype.
