How to Replace Door Handles

Over time the knobs on your door may become stiff, or even break. These are indications that it's time to replace the knobs. double glazing door handle repairs will help you select the right replacement door handle for your home.
Door Knobs
Door handles add to the aesthetics of your home while also making it easier for people to open and shut doors. They come in a variety of colors, finishes, and types to complement your decor. If yours has begun to show signs of wear or require an upgrade, you can replace them in a few simple steps.
The first thing you need to do is locate the spindle or shaft through which the knob is attached to the door. Some have a tiny hole that you can put a narrow screwdriver into to remove the set screws holding the knob in place. Some have a tiny slot or hole through which you can use to press an activated detent pin that is spring-activated using a flathead. This pin releases the latch mechanism and lets you pull or push the knob.
Once you have the spindle or shaft, in your hand, remove the old knob and replace it. Make sure it is aligned correctly and ensure that the latch is working properly before tightening the set screws.
After replacing the knob, place the latch rod in position over the door's hole and interlock it with the rod mechanism on the second knob. Make sure that the holes are aligned then tighten the latch plate screws.
Some people opt for a smooth or brushed finish on their door hardware to create an elegant, modern look that is a perfect match for other furniture in their homes. Some prefer a rustic design that is perfect for farmhouse-style rooms. If you have someone in your family who has mobility issues, you may want to choose the lever or rim lock that require less pressure to operate.
Other factors are being considered more and more for the design of door handles. Accessibility and control of infections have been key issues in the creation of new designs for handles. For instance some handles handle designs can be operated by the arm of a person.
Latch
The latch that holds the door handle open may wear out as time passes. It is simple to replace the latch on your door handle. This will result in a big difference in how it opens and closes.
Depending on what kind of handle you choose the latch can be a separate piece or a component of the knob. In any case, you'll follow the same procedure for removing and replacing. Getting the old latch out of its place is quite simple particularly if your door handle is equipped with what's called a "magic button". This tiny pressure-slot, found on the side knob, is what you have to press to remove the latch of the handle.
If your handle does not have this button the first step is to take off any cover plates that rest over the latch plate. These are usually rectangular or circular and can be removed with a screwdriver. Some have a slot in which you can place your screwdriver. Other handles simply snap off.
Then, remove the machine screws that secure the inner plate and latch to the door handle. You'll need to keep these screws with a pointed tip in a secure location so that you can reuse them later. After the screws have been removed, you can take the latch plate and the mechanism from the hole and put it aside.
You can now begin working on the new latch. Insert the latch plate into the door hole and secure it with the hardware supplied. Make sure that the square pin in the interior of the latch is facing the latching mechanism in the handle and is aligned with the screw holes on the other sides of the handle. Then push the exterior latch plate on and secure it with the screws provided.
Strike Plate
It is typical to replace a door handle if it feels loose, or isn't locking properly. This is often due to malfunctioning components of the latching mechanism, such as an unbalanced strike plate that is too short or moved up or down on the doorjamb with time. This easy project allows you to replace your existing strike plate with a new, longer one that will give you better security and will keep your door shut.
To determine if the issue is caused by the strike plate, apply lipstick or a similar marking material to the bolt that is used to latch. Close the door and try to latch it. If the mark is below the strike plate's hole, it indicates that the plate is too small and the door won't latch. If the mark is over the strike plate hole, it's most likely that the strike plate has been moved upwards or downwards on the doorjamb.
It is possible to screw the new strikeplate into place over the old one by using the screws supplied with it, based on the door. However, you may need to drill holes prior to drilling and then chisel a bit of the wood to ensure it's snugly fitted. If this is the case, you must be careful not to chisel too hard or you'll damage the strength of your doorjamb.
Installing a new style box strike plate will provide the lock with a stronger hold on the doors and will require more force to open them. Typically it will require two longer screws to secure the strike plate to the door frame. You'll need remove the previous strike plate, then drill and chisel the wood to create space for the new one.
This difficult-to-find strike plate is made of solid brass and has a thick, heavy-duty. It's made to be used on antique rim locks. It comes with wood screws and machine screws, which means you'll have the correct equipment for your task. Be exterior door handle repairs bristol that the wood screws have a pointy edge, whereas the machine screws are more blunt.
