Door handles may seem like a small detail, but if you dislike the appearance of the handles or are finding them difficult to use, it's worth replacing them. With a bit of patience, you can get a new handle in no time.

Door handles aren't just an important for their aesthetic value to your home, but they're crucial for safety as they allow you to lock and unlock your door. One of the first indications that your door handle requires replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious problem because you won't be capable of locking or unlocking the door which could put you and your family at risk.

Remove the Strike Plate

When you replace your handle, you'll want to replace the latch plate, which holds the hole that the door's latch is inserted into when it closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates that are circular and rectangular plate (see the diagram above which illustrates the components of the door handle). If your current latch plate has rectangular, swap it out for the round one so that the latch is able to hook into the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle more comfortable to use.

The first step is to take off the screw that is holding the old latch plate. The screws are often quite tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. If possible, it may be beneficial to have a second person assist you with this task.

Once the screws are removed, the latch plate should pull out of the door with ease. If it's stuck or won't move using a nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.

Now you can move on to making the new door strike plate to be installed. Using the wood screws that were included with your new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws as this can damage the strike plate.


If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, close and open the door to see whether it locks and closes properly. If not you'll have to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, forward or back until the door shuts correctly.

If the door continues to move or jiggles, you may have to enlarge your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or are not sized correctly for the latch, or from damage or a broken strike plate. If this is the case you can use a metal file instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Take off the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that slides through the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also hooks in the door frame to ensure that the door stays closed. If your door wobbles when you close it, an upgrade to the latch could be the only thing needed to fix the problem.

It's hard to see the screws that secure the latch to the door, but there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that allows you to insert a screwdriver in order to take it off. Once you've removed the trim plate, it should be easy to remove the latch and the bolts that keep the spindle and latch in the position.

If the latch is not easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed slot of the latch and then gently twist or jiggle until you feel that the latch and handle are beginning to break off. You may have to repeat this process several times before you can remove the latch.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any problems after you have removed the old one. Use the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is properly positioned in the slot, aligned with the screw chambers.

Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the front of the door to the edge). Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle matches the measurement.

You'll require a brand new cylinder for your lock if replacing the latch and handle or your existing one is damaged. If you are not changing locks the new lock should fit in the recess you have already installed, and will work with the keys you have already. Select a latch with rectangular cover plates to match your existing handles.

Remove the cover plate

To replace the door handle inside take off the cover plate (or rose) that covers the screws and mechanism. Use a flathead to remove the plate. It may have a slot on one edge or be held by pins.

Remove the screw that is holding the handle in the interior and put it aside after the cover plate is removed. Remove the screws that hold both the outer and inner plates. You can loosen them with a Philips Screwdriver. Take the inner plates and latch from the door. Place them aside.

Not all doors have this gap. If yours does not have a handle, you'll need to drill a hole into the door for the new handle. The procedure to do this is the same procedure for opening a door with locks, but you'll need to take extra care to avoid damaging the frame or door.

The installation of new door knob screws is required after the holes have been drilled. Make sure you purchase the same size as the previous ones, so that you won't have an handle that is either too tight or too loose.
