Bill Gates didn't choose the name for Microsoft -- Paul Allen did. Allen reasoned that there would be a glut of new computer but they would need standard means to write software for all of them. At the time, that didn't mean operating systems -- it meant programming languages ported to each microprocessor. What the next leap was going to be after microprocessors made computing cheap would be SOFTWARE.

MICROSOFT is a portmanteau of the words "MICROprocessor" and "SOFTware." Their mission was to be "Software for Microprocessors."

Google is a play on the mathematical "googol," which is the number 1 with 100 zeros after it. It's short hand for a really big number. A "googolplex" is the number 1 followed by a googol zeros. Google's headquarters is known as the Googleplex.

Amazon's one of the founders,Bezos had tentatively decided to call his company Cadabra Inc., in it's earlier days Bezos pored through the A section of the dictionary and had an epiphany when he reached the word Amazon. Earth’s largest river; Earth’s largest bookstore. He walked into the garage one morning and informed his colleagues of the company’s new name. He gave the impression that he didn’t care to hear anyone’s opinion on it, and he registered the new URL on November 1, 1994.

audi-With Horch (meaning "listen" or "hearken" in German) already taken as a trade name, he chose its Latin translation for his company one century ago: Audi. The new firm's four-ring logo represents Audi to this day, symbolizing each of the four companies of the Auto Union: Audi, Horch, Zschopauer and Wanderer.
