Our density-functional theory calculations further suggested that both Ba for Bi/Na-site and Fe dopant, regardless of the substitutional sites, in Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 lead to the induced magnetism, which is illustrated in terms of the exchange splitting between spin subbands through the crystal field theory and Jahn-Teller distortion effects. Our work proposes a simple method for fabricating lead-free ferroelectric materials with ferromagnetism property for multifunctional applications in smart electronic devices.In addition to somatic mutations, germline genetic predisposition to hematologic malignancies is currently emerging as an area attracting high research interest. TH5427 mouse In this study, we investigated genetic alterations in Korean acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (ALL) patients using targeted gene panel sequencing. To this end, a gene panel consisting of 81 genes that are known to be associated with 23 predisposition syndromes was investigated. In addition to sequence variants, gene-level copy number variations (CNVs) were investigated as well. We identified 197 somatic sequence variants and 223 somatic CNVs. The IKZF1 alteration was found to have an adverse effect on overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) in childhood ALL. We found recurrent somatic alterations in Korean ALL patients similar to previous studies on both prevalence and prognostic impact. Six patients were found to be carriers of variants in six genes associated with primary immunodeficiency disorder (PID). Of the 81 genes associated with 23 predisposition syndromes, this study found only one predisposition germline mutation (TP53) (1.1%). Altogether, our study demonstrated a low probability of germline mutation predisposition to ALL in Korean ALL patients.In this retrospective study, we investigated whether lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) escalation has clinical benefits in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels of 55-99 mg/dL (1.4-2.6 mmol/L), post high-intensity. Out of 6317 Korean patients screened in 2005-2018, 1159 individuals with ASCVD and LDL-C levels of 55-99 mg/dL after statin use equivalent to 40 mg atorvastatin were included. After 12 propensity score matching, 492 patients (164 with LLT escalation, 328 controls without LLT escalation) were finally analysed. Primary outcome variables were major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) and all-cause death. At median follow-up (1.93 years), the escalation group had a lower MACCE rate (1.72 vs. 3.38 events/100 person-years; hazard ratio [HR] 0.34, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.14-0.83; p = 0.018) than the control group. The incidence of all-cause death (0.86 vs. 1.02 events/100 person-years; HR 0.58, 95% CI 0.15-2.19; p = 0.42) and each MACCE component did not differ between groups. Kaplan-Meier curves exhibited lower risk of MACCE in the escalation group (HR 0.36, 95% CI 0.12-0.97; p = 0.040) but a difference not statistically significant in all-cause death (HR 0.30, 95% CI 0.04-2.48; p = 0.26). LLT escalation was associated with reduced cardiovascular risk, supporting more aggressive LLT in this population.Compressions of magnetorheological (MR) fluids have been carried out under instantaneous magnetic fields. The yield strength of the MR fluid in compressive mode has been derived by assuming that it was a transformed shear flow in Bi-visous model. The compressive stresses have experimentally studied under different magnetic fields, different initial gap distances and different compressive velocities. The nominal yield shear stresses of the compressed MR fluid under different influential factors have been calculated. The compressive stress increased in a power law as the applied magnetic field increased, while it decreased as the initial gap distance and the compressive velocity increased. With the increase of magnetic field, the difference between the nominal yield shear stress curves increased, and the exponents of the power law increased with the increase of the magnetic field strengths. A larger initial gap distance and a lower compressive velocity resulted in a higher nominal yield shear stress under the same instantaneous magnetic field. The achieved results of the nominal yield shear stress with magnetic field seemed to deviate from the prediction of dipole model, and the chain structure aggregation effect, the sealing effect and the friction effect by compression should be considered.
Lung cancer incidence and mortality rates have increased in some low and medium-resourced countries.

This study aimed to describe the clinicopathological pattern and management of lung cancer seen in our setting.

We reviewed cases of pulmonary neoplasm diagnosed and managed at the University of Ilorin teaching hospital over eight years. Cases with tissue diagnosis were enrolled in the study and relevant clinical data were collected from the medical record using a proforma.

Hospital-based retrospective study.

Out of the 71 cases of primary lung cancer reviewed, 44(62%) were males and the male to female ratio was 21. The mean age was 62±14 years and the occurrence was highest in aged 50-69 years. Thirty (42.3%) with histories of tobacco smoking were males. Adenocarcinoma accounted for 34(54.9%), 23(32.4%) were squamous cell carcinoma, 2(2.8%) were large cell carcinoma and 6(8.5%) were other histological variants. The majority (82.7%) presented at stage III-IV lung cancers, 56.3% had malignant pleural effusion and 74.6% received palliative care. Thirty-eight (53.3%) had chest tube drainage, 19(26.7%) underwent chemical pleurodesis and 22(31.0%) received Cisplatin-based systemic chemotherapy. One patient had curative surgery and none received radiotherapy. At 12 months, 4 (5.6%) were still alive, 14(19.7%) cases had medical records of their death and 53(74.7%) were lost to follow up.

This study has highlighted the clinicopathological trend, high rate of mortality and late presentation of lung cancer in our setting. There is a need to increase the awareness of the warning signs and risk factors to ensure early detection and facilitate curative therapy.
