Window Handles
Window handles are available in a variety of styles and colors to fit your home. They operate a locking system hidden within the frame that allows you to open and close the double glazed windows.
It is important to measure the spindle before replacing your handle. This is the distance that the nose extends from the base plate or the distance it is inserted into the lock.
Espag Handles
Espag handles are used to operate multi-point locks on double-glazed windows. The handle can be turned around the window to improve security. Our collection of espagnolette handles includes straight and cranked styles, available in various finishes such as chrome, brass and black.
Each handle is made from sturdy die cast zinc that is powder coated or plated to provide high corrosion resistance as well as protection against wear. They are designed for use on uPVC and aluminium windows with shoot bolt or espagnolette mechanisms. They can be locked in the closed position using the push button or key to lock in place.
Typically, espagnolette handles feature a 7mm squared spindle that runs through the lever backplate and fits into a lock mechanism inside the frame of the sash. Turning the handle activates the lock. When choosing an espagnolette handle for the first time, it is crucial to take the spindle length into consideration as it will determine how the window can be opened. The size of the spindle will be marked on the backplate of the handle numbers like 5', '3/4' or '2/3' and this is the one you must compare to your existing handle to ensure it will fit.
Cranked handles are a different design for straight handles. They can be ordered in left-handed versions (opened clockwise) and right-handed versions (opened anticlockwise), depending on the way you open your window. The cranked design is intended to give you more hand clearance when opening the window, ideal for windows that may be close to the frame's edge.
The cockspur handle is another variation of the espagnolette design, this one with a cockspur nose that closes on the striker plate in a manner similar as an espagnolette multi-point lock. This handle can be used to repair the cockspur handles that were previously used on UPVC or aluminum windows.
The key-lock insert can be used for both cockspur and cranked handle models. They come with a choice of handles and come with a blanking plug in black if prefer your window handle to be unlocked, or if you want to use it solely as a fire egress.
Cockspur Handles
The Cockspur handle is a traditional window handle with an elongated spur (triangle bit) that presses against the wedge found on the frame when the handle is closed. They are typically found on older aluminium or uPVC windows without an internal mechanism that holds the frame. The cockspur handles help to hold them together.
The handles are available in a large selection of nose and nib height options to accommodate different profiles. They are also suitable for both right and left hand window systems. They're the perfect solution for those looking to replace a window handle that's worn or damaged, but don't require more complicated internal devices.
Our Sparta cockspur window handle is constructed of high quality materials and is a well-loved choice for a variety of uses. It has a sleek, ergonomic look and is equipped with a standard deadlock cylinder to increase security. It is available in various backset heights that fit all sizes of common casements and can be used with a full set of window accessories that match.
In-line cockspur handle models are straight and turn either left or right while cranked cockspur handles feature an 'ear that is attached to a striker plate made of plastic that is fixed to the frame. It is easy to use and can be locked or unlocked by using a key.
Espagnolette handles are generally considered to be more secure than cockspur handles since they utilize a spindle to operate multiple locks hidden inside the frame. These handles are a great solution for those looking for an extra secure handle for their double-glazing. They come in a variety of styles to fit your home's decor.
It is essential to measure your windows prior to purchasing new frames. This will ensure that the handle and spindle are of the correct dimensions for your new frames. Select a product that meets the Secured By Design minimum requirements.
Tilt and Turn Handles
The advantages and utility of tilt and turn windows are growing. They allow for multiple opening options and can be opened in various ways which helps with cleaning and allows fresh air to enter the home or allowing for the fire escape.
They function in a similar manner as an espagnolette handle, but come with additional functions, making them better suited to tilt and turn style windows. The lever can be placed down when locked to close the windows or 90 degrees to tilt it open like windows, or up to open the window.
They are equipped with an advanced locking mechanism that is more efficient against forced entry than double-glazed casement windows. When the handle is closed, the outer lower hinge has locking pins that are encased in a metal rail within the frame. Two additional hinges on the corners of the bottom can also be opened up to hold the inner window in position. This feature is ideal for windows with larger windows and permits better air circulation.
The open mode is activated when the handle is turned facing up and opens the window by an upward tilt that provides healthy airflow and makes cleaning easier than ever. The sash can be pushed inwards on either side of the windows to create a gap large enough to fit an incline or a stool through.
Tilt-and turn handles are usually larger than espag and cockspur handles because they have to be able handle the larger and larger frames of the same sizes. They are usually spindle based and utilize the same kind of fixings that are used in a standard cockspur or espag handle, but they have larger bases and typically larger screw centres.
uPVC frames which are more affordable than timber or aluminium, and do not require painting are the most well-known for these windows. However there are numerous wood-effect finishes that are available. Aluminium is a second option for these styles of windows since it can be painted in any colour to match the existing look of your home. It is also lighter than uPVC.
Handles for blades or spades
Whether you are upgrading your uPVC windows, or replacing the ones that came with the property, it is essential to select handles that complement the design and function of the window. In the end, the closing and locking mechanisms are as important as the frame permitting you to operate your uPVC windows efficiently and with no hassle. You also want to make sure that the handles are top quality and will last long, rather than breaking easily or becoming susceptible to damage.
The spade or blade handle is one of the most commonly used kinds of handles. These are commonly used on tilt and turn or casement style uPVC windows. The lever acts as either a catch, latch or multi-point locking mechanism. The catch is usually connected to a peg keep or mortice keep that is placed within the frame of the window and offers more security and stability.
These handles are typically employed on double-glazed uPVC casement windows, or tilt-and turn windows. They are designed for greater ergonomics and offer more leverage to open the windows, making them easier. patio glass door replacement locking handles are available in various designs to match any style of interior.
The handle will include a spindle (7mm) that extends from the back. This spindle is used to encircle and penetrate the gearbox inside the window of the multi-point lock system. This lets the window be closed and locked with more security. Handles are available in a variety of sizes to fit frames of different sizes. Some manufacturers also have straight and angles versions.
You can also enhance the security of uPVC windows by using handles that have a key-locking system. These are great for uPVC doors and windows that are often used. They allow you to lock the window or door from the outside. This makes it harder for burglars to force open the handle or open the door.
There are arguments both for and against a locking handle. We believe it's beneficial because it will add an additional layer of security to your home. Even if you don't think that intruders are likely to break into your home, the fact that they may have a harder than they would with the handles that lock with keys is likely to make them less inclined to do so.
