ELFT's Quality Improvement (QI) team collaborated with the City and Hackney ADHD team to improve the timeliness of their assessment process. In the end, the average wait time from referral to feedback from the assessment was reduced to less than 12 weeks. This is in line the trust's goals.
Diagnosis
ADHD is a medical condition that can be treated with medications, behavioral therapy, or education. It isn't easy for parents and children to understand the condition however there is plenty of support available. Speak with your GP if you or your child is showing symptoms of ADHD. They can refer you a specialist CAMHS who will examine and determine if your child is suffering from ADHD.
If your child is directed to a CAMHS ADHD assessment service they typically will be viewed by a couple of members of the team. They will also request feedback from the child, their parent(s) or carer(s) as well as the teacher who knows them well. The team will employ standard assessment techniques and detailed history taking to evaluate your child's difficulties. They will also send Conners questionnaires to the child or the parent(s) or guardian(s) and a teacher who knows the child well.
The CAMHS team will then determine that your child requires additional tests and will refer them to an expert clinical psychologist. The psychologist will use a variety of tests to determine how your child handles their emotions and behaviour in various situations. They will assess the way your child behaves at home, in school as well as in public areas.
During the examination the doctor will talk with you and your child what they have discovered. The doctor will then make a diagnosis, and then discuss treatment options with you. Medication is often used to help people with ADHD however it does not eliminate all the symptoms.
Rotherham CAMHS is divided into different pathways and the "ADHD assessment pathway" is within the Neurodevelopmental Assessment pathway. Certain children and adolescents will be evaluated for ADHD through the Intellectual Disability CAMHS path. This project was created to cut down on the time it takes for the ADHD assessment. This was accomplished by using a simple data collection tool and embedding it in the clinical system. The average time between the time the referral was made and the time the ADHD assessment feedback was provided has been decreased. The QI team would like to express our gratitude to the City and the Hackney CAMHS ADHD team for their dedication and hard work throughout this project.
If a medication has been prescribed, the specialists discuss the options available with you and your loved ones. There are a variety of medicines that can be utilized to treat ADHD however, they all have different side effects. It is crucial to know what to expect before you begin any treatment.

The project involved twelve people who had been referred recently to the CAMHS ADHD path within the local Trust. The interviews were semi-structured, and they were conducted via telephone. Participants were selected through a targeted sample method. This method was chosen because it is regarded to be more ethical than the randomised controlled trial method that is normally employed in research studies.
Support
The diagnosis of ADHD is often distressing for both parents and children, as the symptoms are often misinterpreted or seen as bad behavior. However, there are lots of services available to help through mental health services as well as organisations and charities that can help. It is crucial that families are aware of what to expect during the process of assessment. CAMHS has produced guidelines on this, and it can be found in the links below.
CAMHS offers a range of treatments for ADHD including medication and lifestyle changes. However, adhd assessment in uk is vital that the correct treatment is chosen for your child, since different individuals respond differently to medication. A CAMHS assessment will include discussions with a nurse or doctor and can involve a range of tests, including brain scans and blood tests, which can help identify possible causes of the symptoms.
The City and Hackney ADHD team recently implemented an improvement project in quality to cut waiting times and improve service satisfaction of users. The team spoke with customers during the assessment process, and identified the key issues that helped inform improvements to the path. Service users, for instance, felt that the assessment was too long and they did not receive enough support after the assessment. They also want to see more specific support for children and their families who are diagnosed with ADHD.
After the QI project was completed the waiting times between initial referral and ADHD evaluation were drastically reduced. This is in line the goals of trust and reflects an emphasis on enhancing effectiveness and capacity across the CAMHS System. The team used an approach to change and Plan-Do-Study Act cycles to drive positive changes within the ADHD pathway.
A diagnosis of ADHD could also assist in obtaining an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for your child. The EHCP allows schools to provide additional support for your children, such as medication and training courses. The school can also contact our CAMHS ADHD clinic for support and advice for children who have been given an ADHD diagnosis.
