Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are an integral component of uPVC frames and must be matched to the frame. The most important thing is the spindle's length which determines whether your new uPVC handle will fit.
Use the table below as a quick reference to measure the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will ensure you order the right replacement window handle for your double glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are the most popular type of handle that is found on upvc windows (they're also often used in aluminium and wood too). They feature a square spindle which extends from the back of the handle, and is inserted into the multi-point lock mechanism which is attached to the window. By turning the handle you operate the system that locks and unlocks the locking points around the window.
Espag window handles are available in a variety of styles and functions. Some have a push button for the locking position to be locked, and key-locking. (And nonlocking for fire escape if required.) A lot of them meet the Secure by Design specification to add an extra layer of security. They also come with a variety of different spindle lengths which can be adjusted using spindle sleeves that decrease the size of the protruding spindle.
Yale has tested the espagnolette handles that we provide to ensure that they are in line with the standards you would expect. They work with Upvc windows, timber windows and frames made of aluminium. We offer a variety of colors and match the handle with your existing hinges.
Another important aspect of espagnolette handles is their step height. This is the distance from the bottom of the handle up to where it sits on the frame, so it is essential to make sure it's right to ensure a secure and tight fit. Fortunately, most of our handles comply with industry standards of 43mm between screw hole centres.
You can choose between straight or Cranked handles. Cranked handles are ideal for situations where the espagnolette handle will be situated close to the frame's edge as they will give you more clearance for opening the window.
Our upvc replacement handle range includes a variety of styles, finishes and colors to match your decor, including polished chrome, antique brass and satin nickel. Some of our handles have a soft-close feature to minimize the sound of windows closing.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle made specifically for the manufacturer who wants to offer their customers a stylish and durable design. These handles work with either uPVC or aluminium windows. They work by having an incline on the handle that is secured over the edge of the frame to secure the window. The window handle can also be lockable so that it can only be opened when it is pushed. This adds additional security. The handle comes in five different finishes, with both right and left hand versions that allow the designer to cater for a wider range of windows.
The window handle for the cockspur cockspur comes with three packing pieces that are of different thicknesses. This allows them to be adjusted to a variety of backset sizes. Each piece fits snugly under the handle's nose and can be removed or incorporated into the dimensions of the step in order to achieve a different backset that ranges from 9mm to 21mm. The handle comes in left and right handed versions, with straight or curved noses.
When you're looking for a replacement for your existing handles for cockspurs, you need to measure the current handle height to ensure that the new handle is suitable for the space. A wrong handle could result in a variety of issues like the inability of closing the window. This could be a hassle for homeowners and could lead to unnecessary stress.
A cockspur handle is used on older uPVC, timber and aluminium windows. These kinds of handles do not include any type of window lock, as opposed to an Espag handle, which is found on modern windows that will incorporate shootbolts and an Espagnolette bar window lock.
The handle espagnolette (often abbreviated as 'espag" or 'espag") is the most commonly used handle used on new uPVC Casement Windows. When you turn the handle of the espagnolette it opens the Yale Encloser locking system which is much more secure than a conventional British standard handle or cockspur. This is because the espagnolette handle turns multiple locks to secure the window frame.
