Replacement Handles For Windows
Window handles are one of the most used parts of double-glazed windows. Over time, they may get worn out or rusted.
To replace a UPVC window handle, you will need to know the length of the spindle of your existing handle and its fixings. The best way to do this is by looking at the base of the handle you have previously replaced.
Handle
Over time uPVC handles and window locks may be damaged due to wear and tear or by intentional or accidental damage. This can result in the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close, or that it's not even locked in any way. If this happens it may be tempting to replace the whole window unit, but this isn't always necessary. In many instances an upgrade to the handle or lock is enough.
The most popular kind of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. This has a spindle which protrudes from the handle and slots into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. It's important to match the correct handle and lock to your windows in order to ensure that they work properly, which is why we stock a wide selection of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.
It's an ideal idea to replace the uPVC handle using screw covers to shield the screws from corrosion and to keep them secure. Alternatively, it's possible to make use of a spacer or washer to ensure a better seal. A screw cap in place will also stop debris and water from getting into the handle and damaging the handle.
After taking the handle out of the window, it's a good idea for you to clean both the spindle as well as the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle is fitted and functions properly, and it will also help to prevent any dirt from entering the multipoint lock.
The next step is to install the new uPVC handle. It is essential to follow the directions provided by the handle you have purchased, and to take a look at your previous one prior to beginning in order to get an idea of the correct way to go about it. Most of the time, the process is quite simple. However, if you experience any problems along the way that aren't covered in this article you should get in touch with our team for more assistance.
It is also important to know that if you're replacing an uPVC cockspur (also known as Espag handle), you will need the step height of your window to determine the right size handle. The steps height is the distance between the base of the window and the location where the handles of the cockspur are.
Hinges
The hinges might not be aligned with the frame of the window if your windows start to close and open with a visible space. It is usually a simple fix that can be fixed by replacing the hinges. We have a variety of options and even modify the size of the window hinges to suit your requirements.
We offer a variety of hinges for Upvc and timber windows. These are available in a variety of colors to fit with your existing window frames and come with all fixings for fitting. We can provide repair screws for double-glazed windows that have older style hinges. This allows you to cut the thread back into the frame.
We offer a range of different hinge types including traditional casement window hinges that can be used with a normal or tilt and turn handle, through to fire escape egress hinges for use on larger-sized side-hung windows. These are designed to open fully in the event of a crisis and feature an easy-cleaning position that makes it easy to clean. We also stock hinges that are restricted in egress and are designed to limit the opening angle of the window to a maximum of 100mm perfect for families with children.
Squeaky hinges can be a sign that the hinges are wearing out, this is often due to the rubbing of metal against. A small amount of lubricant can help, however should the noise continue to be heard, it is likely that the hinges will require replacement.
Window plumbs help avoid unnecessary binding, this means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, ensuring that it opens and closes correctly. If a window is not plumb, it could have issues closing and opening or becoming damaged over time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.
When upvc replacement door handles purchase replacement windows made of upvc hinges be aware that they are available in either imperial or sizes in metric. The metric sizes tend to be slightly more precise, however it's not noticeable once they are installed. The first corner fixing holes on the track and arm are a standard size, but the rest could differ in length based on the hardware used originally. We recommend that you measure the spacing of holes on your existing frame prior to purchasing any hinges made of upvc to ensure that they are the correct size.
Crank
Over time, normal wear and tear can result in damage to the window handle and lock mechanism, or even the crank mechanism. This could affect the ease of opening and closing your windows and also compromise their security. If your window is difficult to open or shut or you hear a clicking sound when turning the handle it could indicate you need to replace the mechanism. If you are unable to lock your window or the multipoint locks is damaged, it might be worth replacing this part as well.
It's simple to replace a window crank with minimal effort. However, it is essential to buy the correct size replacement. Make sure the replacement has the same step in height as the previous one that can be established by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch in the track across the bottom of the window frame. You can also measure the spindle length on the handle you currently have to determine the size of a replacement.
The type of handle you choose for your window will determine the type of crank mechanism required for your casement and awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle on the back that is connected to the frame of the window and controls the mechanism. Cockspur handles have pegs that are held in the frame by three or four screws which are set in the sash and the frame.
It's easy to replace your window operator once you have identified the correct replacement. Remove any screws for mounting trims from the casement cover, and gently lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the old one, and then remove any rusted trim screw. Then, attach the replacement to the window frame, replace any screws that were damaged or bent, and place the casement cover over the mechanism.
