Upgrades can increase the value of weapons, armors and rings. They also boost extra bonuses like crit chance and PvE damage.

Components

Upgrade components are only available to equipment with a slot. The item must be upgraded to blue level before the component can be applied. In contrast to other mods components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a particular type of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment and some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging gear that is ascended or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A suffix or prefix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's applied to (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions using less Upgrade crystals than they would need to reach the same level using standard methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defence attributes of the weapon or armor. These upgrades can be made using the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them from the cash shop or by collecting them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

The player is able to have up to five boost upgrades at one time; each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-level version of the item will appear in the next reset. This gives players a reason to upgrade their gear even when they're not sure how much it will be improved after the reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be expensive, and there is a significant risk that the item may become obsolete or even break when it fails. When an item is upgraded by a player to a higher level, the original item is replaced with a new item of the same kind. This means that the same armor piece will get an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will come with a bonus of its own. This could be a problem in that it could cause the item to become more expensive if you don't need it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can roll the upgrade of their item. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a brand new one, which will come with a level 1 base and a completely different set of bonuses. This can be useful for some items, but it's not something that should be performed frequently, since it can use up many resources.
