Retinal drawing with a color-coding system brings uniformity in representation of fundus findings so that clinician can decipher various lesions on a two-dimensional drawing. Existing color coding addresses most of the common retinal pathologies including preretinal, intraretinal, and subretinal lesions. However, with the advent of various imaging modalities there is deeper understanding of microanatomy of retina and associated pathologies. With this, there appears further need of newer set of color coding to include the minute details of fundus findings clinically. Through this article, we discuss few common pathologies at different levels of retina layers with color-coding dilemma which calls for a better preciseness in its clinical representations.The shortage of donor corneal tissue worldwide has led to extensive research for alternate corneal equivalents utilizing tissue engineering methods. We conducted experiments using Poly D, L lactic acid polymer along with a copolymer (Eudragit) in varying concentrations to create a biodegradable scaffold suitable for in vitro growth of corneal epithelial stem cells. It was found that stable, spherical, and porous microparticles can be prepared by combining PDLLA and Eudragit RL100 polymers in the ratio of 9010 and 7030. The microparticles can then be fused to form scaffold membranes with porous architecture and good water retention capacity at room temperature using methanol, which can withstand handling during transplantation procedures. The scaffolds made using a 7030 ratio were found to be suitable for the promotion of growth of laboratory corneal epithelial stem cell lines (SIRC cell lines). This innovation can pave way for further developments in corneal stem cell research and growth, thus providing for viable laboratory-derived corneal substitutes.The ophthalmic lenses that come in contact with the eyes pose a high risk for the transmission of bacterial and viral infections in eye clinics. Disinfecting these lenses does not happen stringently in a busy practice. We describe a novel method of disinfecting ophthalmic contact lenses using a semiautomated lens disinfector equipment, semiautomated lens disinfector. The equipment has motors to pump in and pump out water and disinfecting solution into a reservoir bath. The used ophthalmic lenses will be placed in a tray that partially dips into the bath for disinfection. Microbiology tests that were done to check the quality of the disinfection cycle showed good outcomes. Disinfection of ophthalmic contact lenses with the new equipment appeared to effectively eliminate contaminant microorganisms. This equipment can be used in busy ophthalmic clinics to alleviate the chances of cross-infection.Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a common disorder with rising incidence due to increased use of digital devices. While multiple treatment options are available, some are not efficacious or sometimes even safe for use in DES. This is particularly true for Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs) that may contain ingredients having no rational for their use or may actually be harmful. Various committees appointed by the Government have reviewed several FDCs marketed in India and found some of them to be irrational and recommended for their removal. This paper discusses the contents of some of these FDCs marketed for DES with an aim to ensure that prescribers are mindful of their ingredients and whether there is adequate data about their efficacy and safety and prescribe them only if they consider them necessary for managing the patient.Some degenerations involving the peripheral retina can result in a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Currently, there are no clear guidelines for retinal screening and/or management of these peripheral retinal degenerations in patients with or without recent onset posterior vitreous detachment or in those prior to refractive surgery or intraocular procedures. This article aims to provide a set of recommendations for the screening and management of peripheral retinal degenerations based on a common consensus obtained from an expert panel of retinal specialists.We herein describe the kissing MVR technique in cases of microspherophakia for safe and effective endocapsular lens aspiration. Microspherophakia is associated with abnormally lax and broken zonules, which pose a great challenge to the operating surgeon, especially while creating the openings in the capsular bag. In this novel technique, simultaneous use of two 23 G MVR blades reduces the above problem associated with the severely mobile lens. Here, one MVR blade stabilizes the capsular bag and, at the same time, provides counter-traction for the opposite MVR blade while puncturing the capsular bag. Furthermore, the creation of openings in the lens at the equator or just posterior to it is beneficial as the capsule is relatively thicker and stronger at this location. This also minimizes the risk of premature extension to the anterior or posterior capsule, thereby avoiding complications like dropped lens matter, vitreous prolapse, and vitreous traction.Phacoemulsification in soft cataracts can be challenging due to the lack of rigid cleavage planes and the inability to crack. We describe a new phacoemulsification technique for dealing with soft cataracts using high vacuum and zero energy. Following capsulorhexis and hydrodissection, we introduced the phacoemulsification probe, keeping the torsional and longitudinal power at zero. A central groove was created in sculpting mode. We held the nucleus with adequate vacuum in chop mode and divided the nucleus. Then, we rotated and chopped the nucleus similarly into small pieces without using any power. For emulsification, we increased the vacuum to 600 mmHg and then shredded and stuffed the pieces into the phaco probe by the chopper. A newer generation phaco machine with active fluidic system and monitored pressurized infusion helps the surgeon control the intraocular pressure (IOP) and hold the nucleus with vacuum alone, allowing chopping and emulsifying of the pieces without any energy.We aimed to develop a novel and effective technique for creating a smooth deep lamellar dissection of the cornea using a femtosecond (FS) laser for deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), we conducted a retrospective eye bank study. Thirteen fresh human corneas were mounted on an artificial anterior chamber, and deep lamellar cuts were made with a 500-kHz VisuMax FS laser at a level of 50-80 μm anterior to the Descemet's membrane (DM). A posterior diameter of 8 mm with a side cut angle of 110° was used for the anterior penetrating side cut. The anterior lamellar tissue was bluntly dissected. The residual posterior stromal beds and side cuts were examined with microscopy and intraoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) and post-cut endothelial cell evaluations. All corneas revealed a smooth residual posterior stromal bed without any visible irregularities or ridges by microscopy and OCT imaging. Six corneas were suitable for post-cut endothelial cell evaluation 2 days after laser cut, with no significant endothelial cell loss post-laser and blunt dissection of the posterior stroma. FS laser deep lamellar keratoplasty utilizing an ultrafast laser to produce a smooth deep stromal dissection followed by blunt dissection and removal of the anterior stromal tissue yields a consistent and smooth residual stromal bed. The creation of a smooth lamellar dissection in the deep posterior cornea may result in more consistent DALK without the need for air bubble or manual baring of DM that has the risk for DM perforation.
Several factors influence medical students to choose a specialty branch for post-graduate training, and it is important to understand them so that strategies can be made to make it more attractive and hence the shortage in the workforce can be addressed. This study aimed to identify the factors that influenced under-graduate medical students to choose ophthalmology as their specialty for post-graduate training.
It was a descriptive, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study, carried out among medical students at a tertiary academic institute in eastern India. In this survey tool, 25 questions were divided into different sections demographic data, factors influencing the choice and perceptions about ophthalmology as a career option, and the impact of rotatory internship posting on the choice of subject. The various factors were then scored and indexed appropriately.
There were 515 participants. (E/Z)BCI The median age was 23 years. The major influencing factor for choosing ophthalmology was "adequate time" (52.04%), and the discouraging factor was "steep learning curve" (58.64%). Age had an odds ratio of 0.781, showing that the lower the age, the higher the chances of being positively inclined toward ophthalmology as a career choice. Similarly, major deciding factors, perceptions, and experiences in ophthalmology had odds ratios of 1.841, 1.725, and 2.057, respectively, showing a positive inclination.
The study states that a steep learning curve, personal attitudes, and misconceptions may dissuade the students from taking this subject, but adequate clinical exposure and experience, as well as role models during the internship, can create a positive impact on career choice.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, various manifestations have been reported, including ophthalmic symptoms, especially with the different mutations and variants that have occurred over the last few years. In view of this, our study was conducted to gauge the knowledge, attitude, and practices of patients toward the ophthalmic manifestations of COVID-19.
This was a hospital-based, cross-sectional, observational study. Patients who had tested positive for COVID-19 were asked to answer a detailed questionnaire about their knowledge of COVID-19 ophthalmic symptoms, their experience with the symptoms, and their attitude and practice toward the same. The data collected was analyzed using Microsoft Excel, and the Chi-squared test was used to determine significant differences in the results among different demographic profiles.
Our study found that 82 (39%) of the 210 participants were aware that COVID-19 could present with symptoms in the eyes. A total of 47 participants had experienced eye symptoms of COVID-19. Among them, only 15 (31.91%) consulted and received treatment from an ophthalmologist or general physician for the same. Most of them (59.57%) did not seek any treatment, and 8.5% self-medicated or used non-allopathic forms of medicine. The most common symptom was redness of the eyes, reported by 57.44% of those who had eye symptoms.
Most people were unaware of ocular manifestations of COVID-19 and most of those who were aware were medical professionals. Amongst those who developed symptoms, only a minority sought medical treatment.
