Item Upgrades: A Simple Definition
Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a frequent and essential way to boost the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

In most cases, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade gear because of their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They improve the stats of the item that they are attached to. Armor upgrades are found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged by using a specialist or higher salvage kit to retrieve upgrade components from items.

The amount of damage that an armored item or weapon can absorb depends on the degree of upgrades. The damage absorption of an item of armor will increase as it is upgraded to the highest upgrade level. But, it's important to be aware that this upgrade will raise its weight, requiring it to be heavier than it was before.

There are a variety of armor upgrade available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. Certain upgrades give armor a greater amount of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The kind of armor upgrade an item can get will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as illustrated in the table below.

Some upgrades also feature magic or a hybrid of magic and technology, which is identified by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Furthermore, some upgrades require charges to use, which are indicated by a "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either continuously updated or never expire based on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is by using Iron Ore, which can be found by exploring the environment and looting chests of minor loot. Titanium is more costly, however, it is available at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide significant improvements in stats and are definitely worth the cost.


A piece of armor upgraded to its maximum upgrade level will dramatically boost its defense, but the player should be aware that putting more weight on it can drastically decrease its speed and agility. It is not recommended to upgrade armor above +9. The defensive boost gained generally isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to improve the effectiveness of specific aspects of an weapon. For example, an upgrade may enhance the damage caused by shotgun shells or the accuracy of a sniper rifle. Certain firearms have upgrades that enhance their inherent qualities. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and reduces the risk of weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

The majority of weapon upgrades require a whetblade. It's one of three Power Dices and a different amount Minerals and Erons. They can be obtained by completing Side Quests or killing a certain amount of monsters and bosses.

To upgrade an equipment set, weapon piece or Whetblade, you must visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a certain amount of Bars. The more bars required to complete an upgrade, the more expensive the upgrade. The cost of upgrades will be lower if have more than one of the upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade weapon and equipment sets has changed. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a specific number of Bars. You could do this until your weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level at which point the upgrades would be reset.

You can still do this but the process is based on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're much better off going to stores and buying gear with low upgrade levels, but good base scores and stat distributions. These items have a greater likelihood of granting you most prestigious tier of benefits and blessings.

Most players will want to make the most of upgrades to weapons they are most likely to use to allow them to progress quicker. Additionally players, they should think about upgrading the weapons that are most popular with their teammates to increase their power and effective. Shepard, for example should upgrade his M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when accompanied by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. item upgrade is a method for making them, where you combine a gemstone with a number specific reagents on a table. The higher the grade of the gem has, the more powerful its secondary effect. These reagents are available from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses all over the world, or by salvaging Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.

The Jeweler can boost the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the jewel, it will provide a different stat boost when slotted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

The Jeweler is able to create all kinds of gems, except for the rare and legendary ones, which you must be at an appropriate level to obtain. Jewels can be replaced by another jewel without damaging the original. You can only replace the jewel once within an item of equipment.

Utilizing more jewels in a move can make it feel more comfortable and is usually used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. The jewels can also enhance performance and make a surface harder than steel, so that the repeated friction caused by pivots does not cause damage to them.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the look of your shields and weapons. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be freely exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs are upgradeable, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also a scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits or aegis cannot be swapped, and can only be retrieved with an Upgrade extractor or salvaging using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to give your character various small, but useful advantages. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and by performing road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers and later found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player will unlock is the cloak. It provides a tiny, but useful bonus in speed of movement and evasion. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same way to how a player can acquire weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any device. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and only work with certain trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant buffs and skills that remain active even when the character is not fighting. This enables the hero to be more effective while inactive and also helps fill in the void of a solid team or any slots from the talent tree that normally are filled with the hero's best stats.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace in the near future. Also, consider items that have desirable statistics aren't as significant as the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded. This is true especially if you want to upgrade multiple statistics on an item. It is better to upgrade one important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

In the beginning of the game, junglers will usually want to upgrade their yellow trinket to a red, while top and mid players usually choose the pink or green ward (depending on the matchup). These choices can affect the ability of a hero to control the map.

In addition to the items listed above, players will find other trinkets that form of trophies and rewards throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story, like completing a chapter's main quest or killing a particular boss.
