High-risk drinking behavior is common in university students, which often leads to negative consequences. Several standard screening tools to identify high-risk drinkers have been validated in this domain. However, most tools rely on drinking frequency and require standard drink calculations. The Functional-Belief-Based Alcohol use Questionnaire (FBAQ) was recently proposed as a pre-screening tool for high-risk drinkers in the young adult population. We aimed to validate the pre-screening accuracy of the FBAQ when applied to external data of university undergraduates.
Data from two prospective cross-sectional surveys of Chiang Mai University undergraduates were used for validation of the FBAQ. A high-risk drinker was defined as a person with the 12-month AUDIT score ≥ 8. Pre-screening performance and accuracy indices were presented separately for dataset I, dataset II, and the combined dataset. The pooled area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AuROC), sensitivity, and specificity were estrsity undergraduates. Therefore, incorporating the FBAQ as a pre-screening tool to the AUDIT could make the initiation of the screening process easier and reduce extensive AUDIT evaluations in students with low risk.
People who inject drugs are overrepresented in prison and have diverse and complex health needs. However, outcomes after release from prison are poorly understood, limiting effective interventions supporting community reintegration. We describe the prevalence of socio-demographics, physical and mental health, alcohol and other drug use, and crime characteristics of men with histories of injecting drug use after their release from prison in Victoria, Australia.
Data come from the Prison and Transition Health (PATH) prospective cohort study. Interviews were undertaken approximately three, 12, and 24 months after release from their index prison episode and were completed in the community, or in prison for those reimprisoned during the study. We present cross-sectional descriptive statistics for each follow-up wave of the PATH study.
Among 400 men recruited into PATH, 85 % (n = 336) completed at least one follow-up interview; 162 (42 %) completed all three interviews. Participants reported social disadvantage and health inequity, including high rates of unemployment, homelessness, and physical and mental health morbidities at each follow-up time point. Rapid return to illicit substance use was common, as was overdose (ranging 9 %-13 %), receptive syringe sharing (ranging 20 %-29 %), involvement in crime-related activities (ranging 49 %-58 %), and reimprisonment (ranging 22 %-50 %) over the duration of follow-up.
Men in this study experienced substantial health and social challenges across a 24-month prospective follow-up period. Improved understanding of characteristics and experiences of this group after release from prison can inform more coordinated and continued care between prison and the community.

While cigarette and marijuana use has been linked to psychotic experiences, few empirical studies have examined the relation between vaping and psychotic experiences.
We analyzed data from the Healthy Minds Survey (September 2020 - December 2020; N = 29,232 students from 36 universities), and used multiple logistic regression models to examine the associations between vaping over the past 30 days and psychotic experiences over the past 12 months, adjusting for age, gender, and race/ethnicity. We then additionally adjusted for cigarette and marijuana use, as well as depression and anxiety.
Roughly 14 % of students in the sample reported psychotic experiences over the past year, and around 14-15 % of students reported vaping over the past month. In multiple logistic regression models, vaping was significantly associated with psychotic experiences (aOR 1.88; 95 % CI 1.63-2.18). This association attenuated but remained statistically significant even after adjusting for any cigarette use and marijuana use, and after adjusting for depression and anxiety.

Earlier engagement in heavy drinking during adolescence is a risk factor for the development of alcohol use disorders later in life. Longitudinal studies in adolescents have linked brain structure and task-evoked function to future alcohol use; however, less is known about how intrinsic network-level interactions relate to future substance use during this developmental period.
In this prospective longitudinal study, resting-state functional connectivity of the ventral striatum, risky decision making, and sensation seeking were measured in 73 adolescents at baseline. Participants were between the ages of 14 and 15 and had no substantial history of substance use upon study entry. Follow-up interviews were conducted approximately every 3 months to assess the initiation of binge drinking (≥ 5 or ≥ 4 drinks per occasion for males or females, respectively).
Adolescents who began binge drinking sooner exhibited greater connectivity of the ventral striatum to the left precuneus, left angular gyrus, and the left superior frontal gyrus. Greater connectivity of the ventral striatum to the right insula/putamen was associated with longer duration to the onset of binge drinking. Resting-state functional connectivity in these regions was not associated with baseline assessments of risky decision making or sensation seeking.
Findings provide novel information about potential risk factors for early initiation of heavy alcohol use. Buprenorphine, approved for treating opioid use disorder (OUD), is not equally efficacious for all patients. Candidate gene studies have shown limited success in identifying genetic moderators of buprenorphine treatment response.
We studied 1616 European-ancestry individuals enrolled in the Million Veteran Program, of whom 1609 had an ICD-9/10 code consistent with OUD, a 180-day buprenorphine treatment exposure, and genome-wide genotype data. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of buprenorphine treatment response [defined as having no opioid-positive urine drug screens (UDS) following the first prescription]. We also examined correlates of buprenorphine treatment response in multivariable analyses.

We evaluated the drivers' factors of the abundance and distribution of two microplastics morphotypes (fibers and fragments) in surface sediments (5 cm deep) on SW Atlantic beaches with different plastics waste contribution along the coastline. Beach geomorphology, sediment grain size, distance to the urban area, continental waters discharge and human activities were the analyzed factors. Fibers abundance was significantly highest in pocket beaches, moderately exposed and closest to the urban center, while the fragments abundance was highest in beaches with stormwater outfall. The fine sand and the high recreational level were also factors driving the abundance of both morphotypes. Therefore, plastic morphotype and abundance vary according to the determining factors.Seagrass detritus can attract numerous invertebrates as it provides food and substrate within the meadow or in adjacent environments. Nonetheless, several factors could modify the invertebrate response to this habitat. In this study, we tested if epifaunal colonisation of Zostera noltei detritus was related to substrate availability rather than food and whether colonising assemblages were similar according to the meadow structural complexity. Litterbags filled with natural or artificial detritus were deployed within an eelgrass meadow in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Thau lagoon, France). Colonisation appeared to be driven by the presence of detritus, with similar assemblages in natural and artificial substrate, but with more individuals than the empty bags, used as controls. There were also no differences according to habitat complexity. These findings show that detritus, acting as a faunal magnet, plays an important role in maintaining biodiversity, as epifauna is a critical trophic link between primary producers and consumers.According to all latest phylogenetic analyses, the taxon Pancrustacea embraces the crustaceans in the traditional sense and the hexapods. Members of the Pancrustacea for a long time have been known to display distinct similarities in the architecture of their brains. Here, we review recent progress and open questions concerning structural and functional communalities of selected higher integrative neuropils in the lateral protocerebrum of pancrustaceans, the mushroom bodies and hemiellipsoid bodies. We also discuss the projection neuron pathway which provides a distinct input channel to both mushroom and hemiellipsoid bodies from the primary chemosensory centers in the deutocerebrum. Neuronal characters are mapped on a current pancrustacean phylogeny in order to extract those characters that are part of the pancrustacean ground pattern. Furthermore, we summarize recent insights into the evolutionary transformation of mushroom body morphology across the Pancrustacea.
