The hot-spot analysis was performed by applying Getis-Ord Gi* spatial statistics to Land Surface Temperature (LST) layers, obtained from Landsat 8 remote sensing data during the 2015-2019 daytime summer and winter period, to delimitate summer hot- and cool-spots, and winter warm- and cold-spots. Further, these ones were spatially combined thus obtaining a comprehensive summer-winter Thermal Hot-Spot (THSSW) spatial indicator. Winter and summer mean daily thermal comfort profiles were provided for the study area assessing the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) by using meteorological data available from seven local weather stations, located at a maximum distance of 350 m from industrial sites. A specific focus on industrial sites was carried out by analyzing the industrial buildings characteristics and their surrounding areas (50 m buffer), through the following layers industrial building area (BA), surface albedo of buildings (ALB), impervious area (IA), tree cover (TC), and grassland area (GA). The novel THSSW classification applied to industrial buildings has shown that about 50% of the buildings were located in areas characterized by summer hot-spots. Increases in BA and IA revealed warming effects on industrial buildings, whereas increases in ALB, TC, and GA disclosed cooling effects. A decrease of about 10% of IA replaced by TC and GA was associated with about 2 °C decrease of LST. Very strong outdoor heat stress conditions were observed during summer daytime, whereas moderate winter outdoor cold stress conditions were recorded during nighttime until the early morning. The thermal spatial hot-spot classification in industrial areas provides a very useful source of information for thermal mitigation strategies aimed to reduce the heat-related health risk for workers.A spatially distributed trace metal transport and transformation module was developed and implemented within the hydrological model TOPKAPI-ETH. The new module can be used to better understand, in high space and time detail, the transport and reactions of trace metals as they move through a catchment from upland sources to downstream areas and water bodies. The newly developed module takes into consideration of solid metal in multiple chemical phases with different reactivity and simulates their mutual transformation over time, which gives the possibility to analyze the fraction of different solid metal phases present in the river suspended sediment. The distributed solute transport model was proved to be capable of explaining the reasons underlying the spatial variability of C-Q relationships that are driven by the combined effect of point and non-point pollution sources, as well as identifying the spatiotemporal hotspots of trace metal pollution. By means of synthetic numerical experiments, a limited impact of slow reactions on dissolved Cd transport from upland to river over short-temporal scales was demonstrated, while for longer scales, e.g. >5 years, this effect becomes more relevant, highlighting potential long-lasting sources of trace metal pollution and their impacts.DNA hypermethylation caused by environmental pollutants like cadmium (Cd) has already been demonstrated in many invertebrates, including earthworms. However, the exact epigenetic mechanisms that drive this hypermethylation are largely unknown and even basic knowledge on DNA methylation and demethylation processes are hardly characterized. Therefore, we used an important bioindicator, the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris, as a model organism to characterize time- and dose-dependent effects of Cd on global and gene-specific DNA methylation and its underlying mechanisms. We revealed Cd-induced adenine and cytosine hypermethylation using specific antibodies in dot blots and found that the methylation level of adenine compared to cytosine changed even to a bigger extent. However, the levels of hydroxymethylated cytosine did not differ between treatment groups. General methylation and demethylation components like methyltransferases (DNMT1 and 3), and ten-eleven translocation (TET) genes were confirmed in L. terrestris by quantitative RealTime PCR. However, neither gene expression, nor DNMT and TET enzyme activity showed significant differences in the Cd exposure groups. Using bisulfite conversion and sequencing, gene body methylation (gbm) of metallothionein 2 (MT2), one of the most important detoxification proteins, was characterized. Cd-dependent changes in MT2 gbm could, however, not be correlated to MT2 gene activity evaluated by quantitative RealTime PCR. Future directions as well as missing links are discussed in the present study hinting towards the importance of studying epigenetic marks and mechanistic insights in a broad variety of species to deepen our knowledge on the effects of changing environmental conditions.Biochar is considered as a promising additive with multi-benefits to compost production. However, how the biochar properties and composting conditions affect the composting process and quality and ecological risk of compost is still unclear. In the present study, we conducted a global meta-analysis based on 876 observations from 84 studies. Overall, regardless of biochar properties and composting conditions, biochar addition could significantly increase the pH (5.90%), germination index (26.6%), contents of nitrate nitrogen (56.6%), total nitrogen (9.50%), and total potassium (10.1%), and degree of polymerization (29.4%) while decrease the electrical conductivity (-5.70%), contents of ammonium nitrogen (-33.7%), bioavailable zinc (-22.9%), and bioavailable copper (-38.6%), and emissions of ammonia (-44.2%), nitrous oxide (-68.4%), and methane (-61.7%). Other compost indicators, including the carbon to nitrogen ratio and total phosphorus content, were found to be insignificantly affected by biochar addition. The responses of tested compost indicators affected by the biochar properties and composting conditions were further explored, based on which the addition of straw biochars at a rate of 10-15% was recommended due to its greater potential to improve quality of compost and reduce its ecological risk. Combining the results of linear regression analysis and structural equation model, the increase in compost pH caused by biochar addition was identified as the key mechanism for the increased nutrient content and decreased heavy metal bioavailability. These results could guide us to choose suitable kinds of biochar or develop engineered biochars with specific functionality to realize an optimal compost production mode.The extensive use of the diphenyl ether herbicide lactofen in recent years has caused serious environmental problems. Therefore, detoxification and elimination of lactofen from the environment are urgently required. In this study, the lactofen-degrading strain Bacillus sp. YS-1 was isolated, which achieved a 97.6% degradation rate of 50 mg/L lactofen within 15 h. Finally, the amino group was acetylated, which formed acetylated aminoacifluorfen, a novel end product in the degradation of lactofen. The toxicity of acetylated aminoacifluorfen to the root and seedling growth of cucumber and sorghum was significantly decreased compared with that of lactofen. The two esterase genes rhoE and rapE, encoding two esterases responsible for lactofen hydrolysis to acifluorfen, were cloned and expressed. The amino acid sequences encoded by rhoE and rapE were 27.78% and 88.21% identical with known esterases, respectively. The optimum temperatures for RhoE and RapE degradation of lactofen were 35 °C and 25 °C, respectively, and both esterases displayed maximal activity at pH 8.0. Both RhoE and RapE prioritized the degradation of (S)-(+)-lactofen, (S)-(-)-quizalofop-ethyl, and (S)-(-)-diclofop-methyl. In this methodologic study (Part 2 of 2), we examined the overlap in sources of evidence and the corresponding results for harms in systematic reviews for gabapentin.

We extracted all citations referenced as sources of evidence for harms of gabapentin from 70 systematic reviews, as well as the harms assessed and numerical results. We assessed consistency of harms between pairs of reviews with a high degree of overlap in sources of evidence (>50%) as determined by corrected covered area (CCA).

We found 514 reports cited across 70 included reviews. Most reports (244/514, 48%) were not cited in more than one review. Among 18 pairs of reviews, we found reviews had differences in which harms were assessed and their choice to meta-analyze estimates or present descriptive summaries. When a specific harm was meta-analyzed in a pair of reviews, we found similar effect estimates.

Differences in harms results across reviews can occur because the choice of harms is driven by reviewer preferences, rather than standardized approaches to selecting harms for assessment.
