Poor control of cancer pain is a major public health problem worldwide. Many potential barriers can lead to suboptimal treatment of cancer pain. One such barrier is inadequate measurement and assessment of cancer-related pain control. This study aimed to assess current pain control and management for hospitalized adult patients with cancer in the Gaza Strip.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from Dec 10, 2017, to April 25, 2018, in the Gaza Strip. The validated Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) questionnaire was translated into Arabic for data collection. The first section of the questionnaire described the patients' sociodemographic characteristics, the second evaluated the severity of cancer, and the third assessed the interference of pain with daily activities. A ten-point Likert scale was used to evaluate the magnitude of cancer pain and its impact on the patients' lifestyle. Participants were 12 years of age and older, and were patients with cancer who had been admitted to Al-Rantisi Hospital or Europeawithin the past week, 74% (54 of 73) were using analgesics daily, and 43% (31 of 73) reported that they needed potent analgesics. 15% (11 of 73) reported concerns about analgesic addiction. The level of functional impairment owing to pain, as reported using the ten-point Likert scale, was highest for daily activities and routines (median 9·0, IQR 7·0-10·0) and least for social relationships (5·0, 0·0-9·0). There was no statistically significantly association between cancer-related pain and gender, educational level, or occupation.

Most patients were taking analgesics but a large proportion reported the need for more potent or frequent doses of painkillers. In addition, pain had a significant effect on the patients' lifestyle. These findings indicate poor control of cancer pain. There is an urgent need to address the reasons for this, to alleviate pain and to improve quality of life.

In Gaza, 2 million people have been affected by more than 13 years of strict land, air, and sea blockades and three wars, during which over 4000 people have been killed and many more have been injured. Additional severe effects have been seen on lives, aspirations, and prospects. We investigated motives, academic situations, and future plans of the upcoming generation of doctors in Gaza, occupied Palestinian territory.

We did a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study involving Palestinian medical students originally from Gaza who were studying at the largest five medical schools in Egypt (Cairo, Ain Shams, Alexandria, Mansoura, and Zagazig Universities). We used a self-designed questionnaire developed from previous similar studies and created on Google Forms (Google, Menlo Park, CA, USA). A pilot study of 37 participants was done to test the comprehensibility of questions and the time needed to care in Gaza. Awareness and supportive programmes for Gazan medical students should be encouraged to improve the quality of health care providers in Gaza.

Eating at fast food restaurants has become a worldwide phenomenon. To understand the factors that influence such behaviour is an important part of modern nutritional research. Social media may influence human eating behaviours in ways that have yet to be investigated. This study tests the possible relationship between two modern trends social media usage and eating at fast food restaurants.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in April, 2017. Undergraduate students aged 17-30 years in the West Bank, occupied Palestinian territory, completed a self-administered online Google Forms survey of 18 questions. Four universities were chosen to represent the four areas of interest; Birzeit University (central West Bank), Al-Quds University (East Jerusalem), An-Najah University (northern West Bank), and Hebron University (southern West Bank). Permission was sought from the administrators of the two most popular Facebook groups for each university (those with the highest number of members). None.The normal wound healing process is characterised by proteolytic events, whereas infection results in dysfunctional activations by endogenous and bacterial proteases. Peptides, downstream reporters of these proteolytic actions, could therefore serve as a promising tool for diagnosis of wounds. Using mass-spectrometry analyses, we here for the first time characterise the peptidome of human wound fluids. Sterile post-surgical wound fluids were found to contain a high degree of peptides in comparison to human plasma. Analyses of the peptidome from uninfected healing wounds and Staphylococcus aureus -infected wounds identify unique peptide patterns of various proteins, including coagulation and complement factors, proteases, and antiproteinases. Together, the work defines a workflow for analysis of peptides derived from wound fluids and demonstrates a proof-of-concept that such fluids can be used for analysis of qualitative differences of peptide patterns from larger patient cohorts, providing potential biomarkers for wound healing and infection.In classical descriptions of vertebrate development, the segregation of the three embryonic germ layers completes by the end of gastrulation. Body formation then proceeds in a head to tail fashion by progressive deposition of lineage-committed progenitors during regression of the primitive streak (PS) and tail bud (TB). The identification by retrospective clonal analysis of a population of neuromesodermal progenitors (NMPs) contributing to both musculoskeletal precursors (paraxial mesoderm) and spinal cord during axis formation challenged these notions. However, classical fate mapping studies of the PS region in amniotes have so far failed to provide direct evidence for such bipotential cells at the single-cell level. Here, using lineage tracing and single-cell RNA sequencing in the chicken embryo, we identify a resident cell population of the anterior PS epiblast, which contributes to neural and mesodermal lineages in trunk and tail. These cells initially behave as monopotent progenitors as classically described and only acquire a bipotential fate later, in more posterior regions. We show that NMPs exhibit a conserved transcriptomic signature during axis elongation but lose their epithelial characteristicsin the TB. Posterior to anterior gradients of convergence speed and ingression along the PS lead to asymmetric exhaustion of PS mesodermal precursor territories. Through limited ingression and increased proliferation, NMPs are maintained and amplified as a cell population which constitute the main progenitors in the TB. Together, our studies provide a novel understanding of the PS and TB contribution through the NMPs to the formation of the body of amniote embryos.In mammals, females generally live longer than males. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underpinning sex-dependent longevity are currently unclear. Epigenetic clocks are powerful biological biomarkers capable of precisely estimating chronological age and identifying novel factors influencing the aging rate using only DNA methylation data. In this study, we developed the first epigenetic clock for domesticated sheep (Ovis aries), which can predict chronological age with a median absolute error of 5.1 months. We have discovered that castrated male sheep have a decelerated aging rate compared to intact males, mediated at least in part by the removal of androgens. Furthermore, we identified several androgen-sensitive CpG dinucleotides that become progressively hypomethylated with age in intact males, but remain stable in castrated males and females. Comparable sex-specific methylation differences in MKLN1 also exist in bat skin and a range of mouse tissues that have high androgen receptor expression, indicating that it may drive androgen-dependent hypomethylation in divergent mammalian species. In characterizing these sites, we identify biologically plausible mechanisms explaining how androgens drive male-accelerated aging.Frequent nightly arousals typical for sleep disorders cause daytime fatigue and present health risks. As such arousals are often short, partial, or occur locally within the brain, reliable characterization in rodent models of sleep disorders and in human patients is challenging. We found that the EEG spectral composition of non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) in healthy mice shows an infraslow (~50 s) interval over which microarousals appear preferentially. NREMS could hence be vulnerable to abnormal arousals on this time scale. Chronic pain is well-known to disrupt sleep. In the spared nerve injury (SNI) mouse model of chronic neuropathic pain, we found more numerous local cortical arousals accompanied by heart rate increases in hindlimb primary somatosensory, but not in prelimbic, cortices, although sleep macroarchitecture appeared unaltered. Closed-loop mechanovibrational stimulation further revealed higher sensory arousability. Chronic pain thus preserved conventional sleep measures but resulted in elevated spontaneous and evoked arousability. To gain insight into this, we performed transcriptomic profiling on these isolates at multiple timepoints, compared to planktonically growing counterparts. Our findings support a model in which eDNA release, followed by increased positive surface charge, perhaps drives initial abiotic attachment. This is seemingly followed by cooperative repression of autolysis and activation of poly-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG) production, which may indicate a developmental shift in structuring the biofilm matrix.
