002 and p less then 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, an association was found between AR and CRS (p less then 0.001, aOR 4.68, 95%CI 4.07-5.39), and also, between the persistent AR and CRS as compared with the intermittent (p less then 0.001, aOR 4.21, 95%CI 3.40-5.22). The present study showed that the prevalence of AR in Bushehr (Southwestern part of Iran) was significantly high. In addition, the results indicated a strong association between AR and CRS, especially in individuals with moderate to severe persistent AR.This letter to the editor has not an abstract.Iatrogenic vessel perforation from endovascular intervention is a devastating complication that commonly is treated with vessel sacrifice. We present a unique case of an iatrogenic proximal basilar artery perforation after submaximal angioplasty in a 67-year-old male presenting with an acute basilar artery occlusion with underlying intracranial atherosclerotic disease. Telescoping flow-diverting stents were then deployed to reconstruct the vessel wall with resulting active hemorrhage resolution. Our case documents a successful deployment of flow-diverting stents with resolution of active hemorrhage after an iatrogenic basilar artery perforation.Chitosan has received widespread attention as an adsorbent for pollutants because of its low cost and great adsorption potentials. Chitosan has abundant hydroxyl and amino groups that can bind heavy metal ions. However, it has defects such as sensitivity to pH, low thermal stability, and low mechanical strength, which limit the application of chitosan in wastewater treatment. The functional groups of chitosan can be modified to improve its performance via crosslinking and graft modification. learn more The porosity and specific surface area of chitosan in powder form are not ideal, therefore, physical modification has been attempted to generate chitosan nanoparticles and hydrogel. Chitosan has also been integrated with other materials (e.g. graphene, zeolite) resulting in composite materials with improved adsorption performance. This review mainly focuses on reports about the application of chitosan and its derivatives to remove different heavy metals. The preparation strategy, adsorption mechanism, and factors affecting the adsorption performance of adsorbents for each type of heavy metal are discussed in detail. Recent reports on important organic pollutants (dyes and phenol) removal by chitosan and its derivatives are also briefly discussed.Emission of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) during sludge aerobic composting has limited the use and development of this economical sludge treatment process. In this study, cheap and easily available sludge was used as raw material for the preparation of adsorbents to eliminate DMS and DMDS. A series of sludge-based activated carbons (SACs) were prepared by acid or base activation, and coconut shell mix was also assessed. The results revealed that SAC preparation by KOH activation without coconut shell mix could significantly enhance the surface area and pore volume of SAC, and showed the maximum adsorption capacity for DMS (53.45 mg g-1) and DMDS (151.28 mg g-1). In addition, SAC had a good adsorption effect on a mixture of DMS and DMDS. The SAC adsorbents could efficiently adsorb DMS and DMDS after four cycles of regeneration. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses demonstrated that adsorption between the SAC and DMS/DMDS was via physical adsorption. The SAC developed in this study utilized waste in a useful way that could significantly reduce the cost of adsorbents and use them for odor elimination during sludge aerobic composting.Historical use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the Republic of Moldova could pose a potential risk for the aquatic environment due to the persistence, bioaccumulation and toxic properties of these environmental pollutants. However, knowledge on environmental concentrations of legacy OCPs in Moldova is limited. In this study, surface sediment from the two main rivers; Dniester (8 sites, n = 15) and Prut (6 sites, n = 12), and two tributary rivers; Bîc (11 sites, n = 11) and Răut (6 sites, n = 6), were collected during 2017-2018 and analyzed for hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and their transformation products (DDDs and DDEs) using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). link2 Sediment concentrations of Ʃ6DDX (1.9-140 ng g-1 dry weight (dw)) and Ʃ4HCHs (n.d-2.5 ng g-1 dw) were found. In the big rivers, the average Ʃ6DDX concentration (18 ng g-1 dw) were 35 times higher than Ʃ4HCHs (0.51 ng g-1 dw). Whereas, in the small rivers the average Ʃ6DDX concentration (32 ng g-1 dw) was approximately 41 times higher than Ʃ4HCHs (0.77 ng g-1 dw). Compared to previous studies from Eastern Europe, the sediment levels were generally similar as found in Moldova's neighboring countries (Romania and Ukraine). Overall, the contamination profile indicates long-term ageing of OCPs used in the past in the agricultural sector. Less than half of the sites (45%) had levels that pose a potential risk for benthic organisms. Hence, further work is needed to determine the bioaccumulation of OCPs in the aquatic food web in this region and the associated risks to ecosystems and human health.PM2.5 pollution is a widespread environmental and health problem, particularly in China. Besides leading to well-known diseases in the respiratory system, PM2.5 can also alter immune function to induce or aggravate allergic diseases. To determine whether there are temporal and spatial differences in the allergic responses to PM2.5, monthly samples were collected from four regions (urban, industrial, suburban, and rural areas) through a whole year in Nanjing city, China. Inorganic chemical components (metals and water-soluble ions) of PM2.5 were analyzed, and the rat basophil cells (RBL-2H3) exposed to PM2.5 were assessed through quantitative measures of degranulation (β-hex and histamine) and pro-inflammation cytokine (IL-4 and TNF-α) expression. The highest levels of β-hex were measured in winter and spring PM2.5 from urban and industrial areas, or autumn PM2.5 from suburban and rural areas. With respect to histamine, autumn PM2.5 samples were most potent irrespective of the location. Autumn and winter PM2.5 induced higher levels of IL-4 than spring and summer samples. However, spring and autumn PM2.5 caused higher levels of TNF-α. The concentrations of water-soluble ions (NH4+, K+ and Cl-), as well as heavy metals (Pb and Cr), were directly and statistically correlated to the inflammation observed in vitro. In general, the differences between regional and seasonal PM2.5 in stimulating cell degranulation may depend on endotoxin and airborne allergen content of PM2.5. The heavy metals and water-soluble ions in PM2.5 were mostly anthropogenic, which increased the particles' mass-based cellular inflammatory potential, therefore, their health risks, e.g. from vehicular exhaust, coal, and biomass combustion, cannot be ignored. The characteristics of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process under the combined actions of intracellular and extracellular polyphosphate (polyP) were investigated with the 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and the fractionation extracting the loosely-bound and tightly-bound extracellular polymer substances (i.e., LB-EPS and TB-EPS) and bacterial cells in EBPR sludge. The hydrolysis/synthesis of extracellular and intracellular polyP was a key step of the phosphate migration and transformation in EBPR sludge. The orthophosphate (orthoP) produced from the intracellular and extracellular polyP anaerobic-hydrolysis was partially accumulated in the bacterial cells and TB-EPS, and then the accumulated orthoP was main composition for these polyP aerobic-synthesis. Importantly, the anaerobic-hydrolysis enhancement of intracellular and extracellular ployP could promote EBPR sludge to absorb volatile fatty acids (VFAs) followed by being transformed into intracellular poly-hydroxy-alkanoates (PHAs). The mechanism for VFAs passing through the LB-EPS and TB-EPS should be an anion-exchange action between orthoP and VFAs. The orthoP accumulation in the TB-EPS kept an orthoP concentration gradient among the TB-EPS, LB-EPS and bulk solution, driving orthoP and VFAs migrations. The orthoP accumulation in the bacterial cells could keep an orthoP concentration difference between the cell-membrane two sides of phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) to promote VFAs passing through the cell membrane considered as an anion exchange membrane. The intracellular PHAs continuously hydrolyzed accompanied with the average chain-length increases of the extracellular and intracellular polyP during the whole aerobic stage. Additionally, the energy of the extracellular polyP synthesized in situ should came from the intracellular PHAs hydrolysis.Sludge has been recognized as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the wastewater treatment plants. Our previous study has demonstrated that free ammonia (FA, i.e., NH3-N) pretreatment is an effective method for enhancing anaerobic digestion of sludge. However, the effects of FA pretreatment on the removal of ARGs in the anaerobic sludge digestion is still unknown. In this study, several ARGs representing various antibiotic classes and integrase gene (intI1) which is crucial for horizontal transfer of ARGs were chosen. link3 This study demonstrated that combined FA pretreatment (420 mg NH3-N/L for 24 h, under which the highest anaerobic sludge biodegradability was achieved in our previous study) and anaerobic digestion could enhance the removal of aac(6')-Ib-cr, blaTEM, sul2, tetA, tetB and tetX from sludge by 17-74% compared with anaerobic digestion without FA pretreatment, resulting in a lower ARGs abundance in the anaerobically digested sludge. This is caused by the removal of tested ARGs during FA pretreatment and the reduced abundance of potential microbial hosts of ARGs due to FA pretreatment during anaerobic digestion. The removal of IntI1 was not significantly affected by FA pretreatment and intI1 did not play a large role in the fate of the tested ARGs in this study. This study indicated that FA pretreatment for anaerobic digestion could potentially reduce the spread of ARGs from the sludge to the natural environment during sludge disposal or reuse.Various veterinary antibiotics (VAs) are used in large quantities as an essential component for intensive livestock farming, and can flow into the environment from various pollution sources. In this study, VAs in surface water and groundwater in the Gwangcheon stream watershed, an intensive livestock farming area in Korea, were analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatograph-quadrupole orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer with online solid phase extraction. Although the selected VAs are relatively mobile and have low KOW values it is significant to assess their fates and ecological risks in the environment. The concentration of VAs in the surface water was higher than that in groundwater by approximately 23-fold, indicating that the former were directly introduced from pollution sources such as livestock manure. An analysis of the correlation between livestock manure production and the residuals of VAs in the stream showed a high linearity (R2 > 0.70), confirming that livestock excreta significantly contributed to the VAs in the watershed.
