If your child or teen has difficulties they may be referred to CAMHS for an ADHD assessment. They will usually be asked to bring with them their parent(s)/guardian(s) and a teacher who knows them well.
Parents/caregivers interviewed in response to COVID-19 emphasized the benefits of remote appointments, but also said that face-toface appointments would be preferable for assessment purposes.
Symptoms
If a child or a young person you know is suffering from ADHD, they might be unable to sit still or forgetting things, experience difficulties falling asleep and are easily distracted by distractions. They may also be unable to keep up with their tasks or activities at home or in school or at home, struggle to comprehend information, and find it hard to follow instructions. They might lose items, have trouble completing assignments or homework and fail to attend appointments. If they are not careful, they could harm themselves or others. They may have a difficult time in relationships, have trouble finding work or a job, and might find it difficult to connect with their family members.
Some children and young people with ADHD are also hyperactive. They may fidget, tap their fingers or struggle to wait for their turn. The ELFT's Quality Improvement team (QI) worked with the City and Hackney ADHD teams to improve the speed and accuracy of their assessment process. The average wait time between assessment and referral was reduced from 12 weeks to less than 12. This is in line with the trust's target.
Diagnosis
ADHD is a medical issue and can be treated through medications, behavioural therapy, or education. They may refer you to a specialist CAMHS team that will evaluate your child and determine if they are suffering from ADHD.
If your child is being referred to an CAMHS ADHD assessment service, they will usually be seen by a member or two of the team. They will also solicit the caregivers or parents of the child and a teacher who knows their child well to provide feedback. The team will employ standardised assessments as well as detailed histories to assess your child's challenges. Treatment

Recent reports have exposed the issue of long wait times for CAMHS services. The wait times for the assessment of ADHD are particularly long, even with high-quality care. National guidelines3 and local plans for transformation4 stress the importance of early identification and evaluation of children and adolescents with ADHD. However there are no specific guidelines regarding how long they should wait.
This quality improvement (QI) project was created to speed up the ADHD assessment process. This was achieved by using an easy data collection tool and embedding it in the clinical system. The average time between the time the referral was made to the date the ADHD assessment feedback was given was reduced. The QI team would like to thank the City and Hackney CAMHS ADHD team for their dedication and hard work during this project.
If a medication is prescribed, the doctors discuss the available options with you and your loved ones. There are many medications that can be used to treat ADHD however they all have distinct negative effects. It is essential to know what to expect when you begin any treatment.
In addition to medications There are a myriad of non-pharmacological treatments that can be used to aid in the treatment of ADHD. These include parenting programmes such as behaviour therapy, and psychological treatments. Sessions for groups or individuals are available. Apps that help with planning and organization could be helpful for someone with ADHD.
The project involved 12 participants who had been referred recently to the CAMHS ADHD path within a local Trust. The interviews were semi-structured and they were conducted over the phone. Participants were recruited through an intentional sampling technique. This method was chosen because it is thought to be more ethical than a randomised controlled trial, which would normally be used in a research study.

Additionally they would like see more targeted assistance for families and children who receive a diagnosis of ADHD.
In the wake of the QI project, the wait times between referral and ADHD evaluation have been reduced substantially. This is in line with the trust-level goals and reflects the focus on improving efficiency and capacity across the CAMHS system. The team used the model of change and Plan-Do–Study–Act cycles to drive positive changes in the ADHD pathway.
A diagnosis of ADHD can be beneficial in obtaining an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for your child. The EHCP allows schools to provide additional assistance for your child including medication and training courses.
