Thyroid carcinoma (TC) is one of the frequent endocrine malignancies, and growing evidence suggests that aberrant microRNA (miRNA) expression contributes to TC development and progression. Nevertheless, the function of miR-330-5p in the progression of TC remains unknown.
The expression levels of miR-330-5 in patients with thyroid carcinoma and healthy controls were detected, and their potential diagnostic and prognostic values were analyzed.
In this study, we firstly found that miR-330-5p expression was markedly upregulated in TC tissue and cell lines. Functionally, the downregulation of miR-330-5p suppressed TC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Further studies revealed that miR-330-5p negatively regulated the expression of forkhead box E1 (FOXE1). More importantly, the results of rescue experiments suggested that FOXE1 overexpression reduced the positive effects of miR-330-5p overexpression in TPC-1 and K-1 cells.
This work revealed that miR-330-5p facilitated the TC progression through targeting FOXE1, which may offer novel therapeutic options for TC.

In the global chronic diseases, type 2 diabetes shows a significant upward trend, and there are more people before prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance). Many patients with impaired glucose tolerance and undiagnosed diabetes do not know that their glucose metabolism system has been in a state of disorder. Every year, about 5% to 10% of prediabetics develop diabetes. One of the important achieving factors may be the increase in blood lipids. However, it is not clear whether the triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein ratio is associated with impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes in the Chinese population. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein and impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes in the Chinese population.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the health screening program. The study included 116,855 participants from 32 locations in China, all of whom were adults over 20. Participants measured fasting blood glucose levels at eoccurrence of prediabetes and diabetes, and there was a saturation effect. The inflection points were 1.04 and 1.33, respectively. The effect value and 95% confidence interval before and after the inflection point of impaired glucose tolerance patients were 1.57 and (1.42, 1.73) and 1.03 and (1.01, 1.05), respectively. The effect value and 95% confidence interval before and after the inflection point in patients with diabetes were 2.07 and (1.80, 2.39) and 1.08 and (1.04, 1.12).
The aim of this study was to evaluate the cost effectiveness of a mobile-based intervention for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and compare it with the usual management mode.
A total of 215 patients with T2DM in a tertiary-care hospital specific to diabetes were selected as the study population. This study was conducted from January 1, 2019 to January 1, 2020. Of the 215 patients, 130 were randomly assigned to the mHealth group and 85 were assigned to the usual care group. IBM SPSS 25.0 software was used for descriptive statistics,
tests, chi-square tests, and correlation analyses. Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was the effectiveness parameter adopted. Cost-effectiveness analyses were performed, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated.
Of the 215 patients with T2DM, the proportion of male patients was 66.0%. The mean age of the patients was 47.2 (SD 9.95). Differences in baseline information were not statistically significant between the two groups (
> 0.05). At A1c, and the mHealth management mode had better cost effectiveness. The health problems caused by the frequent relapse of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remain a worldwide concern since the morbidity rate of PTC ranks the highest among thyroid cancers. Residues from contralateral central lymph node metastases (con-CLNM) are the key reason for persistence or recurrence of unilateral papillary thyroid carcinoma (uni-PTC); however, the ability to assess the status of con-CLNM in uni-PTC patients is limited. To clarify the risk factors of con-CLNM, a total of 250 patients with uni-PTC who underwent total thyroidectomy and bilateral central lymph node dissection were recruited in this study. We compared the clinical, sonographic, and pathological characteristics of patients with con-CLNM to those without con-CLNM and established a nomogram for con-CLNM in uni-PTC. We found that male sex, without Hashimoto's thyroiditis, present capsular invasion, with ipsilateral lateral lymph node metastases, and the ratio of ipsilateral central lymph node metastases ≥0.16 were independent con-CLNM predictors of uni-PTC (ORs 2.797, 0.430, 2.538, 2.202, and 26.588; 95% CIs 1.182-6.617, 0.211-0.876, 1.223-5.267, 1.064-4.557, and 7.596-93.069, respectively). Additionally, a preoperative nomogram for the prediction of con-CLNM based on these risk factors showed good discrimination (C-index 0.881; 95% CI 0.840-0.923; sensitivity 85.3%; specificity 76.0%) and good agreement via the calibration plot. Our study provided a way to quantitatively and accurately predict whether con-CLNM occurred in patients with uni-PTC, which may guide surgeons to evaluate the nodal status and perform tailored therapeutic central lymph node dissection.
The relationship between lipid profiles and serum urate has not been fully investigated. This study aims to investigate the sex- and age-specific association between lipid profiles and serum urate.
This was a cross-sectional study involving 122,351 participants aged 18-99 years from a check-up centre in Southwestern China. Generalized additive models and smooth curve fitting were conducted to explore the association between components of lipid profiles and serum urate. Furthermore, multivariate linear and logistic regression models were also performed.
In generalized additive models, the fitted smoothing curves showed that serum urate fluctuated in a small range with total cholesterol, LDL-C, or HDL-C raising. After adjusting for confounders, the differences in serum urate progressively increased with raising serum triglycerides quartiles. The likelihood (odds ratio, OR) for developing serum urate > 420
mol/L significantly increased in the highest quartile of triglycerides than in the lowest quartile, in hypertriglyceridemia than in normal triglycerides, and with 1 mmol/L increment in triglycerides in all sex- and age-specific groups. Furthermore, the increased OR (95% confidence interval) was higher in females than in males compared with their respective controls.
Serum urate and the likelihood for developing serum urate >420
mol/L increased with triglycerides raising. Females were in a higher likelihood for developing serum urate >420
mol/L than males with raising triglycerides. With changes in total cholesterol, LDL-C, or HDL-C, serum urate fluctuated in a small range.

Laparoscopic radical cystectomy is a challenging surgical procedure; however, it has been largely abandoned in favor of the more intuitive robotic-assisted cystectomy. Due to the prohibitive cost of robotic surgery, the adoption of laparoscopic cystectomy is of relevance in low-resource institutes.
. This is a randomized controlled trial comparing laparoscopic radical cystectomy (LRC) to open radical cystectomy (ORC) at a single institute. Each group included thirty patients. The trial was designed to compare both approaches regarding operative time, blood loss, transfusion requirements, length of hospital stay, time to oral intake, requirement of opioid analgesia, and complications.
LRC was associated with less hospital stay (9.8 vs. 13.8 days,
=0.001), less time to oral solid intake (6 vs. 8.6 days,
=0.031), and lower opioid requirements (23.3% vs. 53.3%,
=0.033). There was a trend towards lower blood loss and transfusion requirements, but this did not reach statistical significance. Overall complication rates were comparable.
Laparoscopic radical cystectomy was associated with comparable postoperative outcomes when compared to ORC in the first laparoscopic cystectomy experience in our center. Benefitting from the assistance of an experienced laparoscopic surgeon is recommended to shorten the learning curve.

Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) remains one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal diseases and has been linked to
(
) infection. This condition may be suspected on clinical grounds, but diagnosis is established using upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
To determine the correlation between the endoscopic and pathological findings among suspected PUD patients who have been referred for diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in National Hospital Abuja.
This is a hospital-based prospective study conducted among suspected PUD patients at National Hospital Abuja over a one-year period. Clinical, endoscopic, and histological findings were ascertained and documented. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0. Tests of significance were done using the chi-square test and Student
-test at 95% confidence intervals.
One hundred and thirty-two patients were included in the study. The ages ranged from 15 to 87 years, mean age 43.30 ± 11.94 years. Seventy-seven (58.3%) patients had abnormal endoscopicy recommended.
Pancreatic carcinoma is a malignant tumor with a high fatality rate, and the increased resistance of pancreatic carcinoma to chemotherapy has become a difficult problem in clinical practice. Hence, it is imperative to develop an effective treatment for pancreatic cancer. Sestrins are a class of stress-induced proteins that have antioxidation functions, regulating cell growth and metabolism. Curcumin is a natural pigment isolated from turmeric. Several studies have also suggested that this molecule has multiple pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor effects. However, there are insufficient studies on curcumin cooperating with the sestrin family to inhibit tumors, and the mechanism is still unclear. Our aim was to observe the potential anticancer effects of curcumin combined with the sestrin family on pancreatic carcinoma and probe its possible molecular mechanisms.
Lentiviral infection, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR assays, Cell Counting Kit-8 assays, real-time cell analysis technology, colony formation assays, wound healing assays, Transwell invasion assays, protein extraction, and western blots (WBs) were used to evaluate the effect of curcumin combined with sestrin2 on the proliferation, invasion, and migration of pancreatic carcinoma cells.
The results revealed that curcumin cooperated with sestrin2 to significantly suppress pancreatic cancer. In addition, we determined that sestrin2 cooperated with curcumin to inhibit pancreatic cancer by specifically targeting Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1/NQO-1.
These findings clarify that curcumin-mediated synergistic targeting of sestrin2 is a potentially valuable treatment for pancreatic cancer.
