Pain is considered a common symptom in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, the results of studies on pain in ALS are limited and inconsistent. The aim of our study was to comprehensively evaluate the potential factors of pain and effects on quality of life (QoL) in patients with ALS from China.

Patients were eligible if they fulfilled the criteria of probable and definitive ALS according to the revised El Escorial criteria. Pain was assessed by the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI). Disease severity, sleep quality, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QoL) were evaluated in ALS patients by the ALS Functional Rating Scale-revised (ALSFRS-R) and ALS severity scale (ALSSS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire (MQOL). Then, the clinical characteristics of ALS patients with pain were compared with those without pain. Last, associated factors ofth pain intensity. Additionally, we identified the adverse effects of ALSSS (LE + UE), HARS and HDRS scores on QoL in Chinese ALS patients.Neuroimaging can help reveal the spatial and temporal diversity of neural activity, which is of utmost importance for understanding the brain. Recent research found that face masks significantly impair emotion recognition on isolated faces. However, faces are rarely seen in isolation and the body is also a key cue for emotional portrayal. Here, therefore, we investigated the impact of face masks on emotion recognition when surveying the full body. Stimuli expressing anger, happiness, sadness, and fear were selected from the BEAST stimuli set. selleck kinase inhibitor Masks were added to these images and participants were asked to recognize the emotion and give a confidence level for that decision for both the masked and unmasked stimuli. We found that, contrary to some work viewing faces in isolation, emotion recognition was generally not impaired by face masks when the whole body is present. In contrast to actual performance, confidence levels were found to decline during the Mask condition across all emotional conditions. Fusion processes conducted on intermingled representations can cause information distortion and the loss of discriminative modality information. To fully exploit the interdependency between source images for better feature representation and improve the fusion accuracy, we present the multi-modal brain medical image fusion method in a disentangled pipeline under the deep learning framework. A three-branch auto-encoder with two complementary branches and a redundant branch is designed to extract the exclusive modality features and common structure features from input images. Especially, to promote the disentanglement of complement and redundancy, a complementary group lasso penalty is proposed to constrain the extracted feature maps. Then, based on the disentangled representations, different fusion strategies are adopted for complementary features and redundant features, respectively. The experiments demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed fusion method in terms of structure preservation, visual quality, and running efficiency.
Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) is a common arrhythmia. Growing evidence suggests that family aggregation and genetic factors are involved in AVNRT. However, in families with a history of AVNRT, disease-causing genes have not been reported.

To investigate the genetic contribution of familial AVNRT using a whole-exome sequencing (WES) approach.

Blood samples were collected from 20 patients from nine families with a history of AVNRT and 100 control participants, and we systematically analyzed mutation profiles using WES. Gene-based burden analysis, integration of previous sporadic AVNRT data, pedigree-based co-segregation, protein-protein interaction network analysis, single-cell RNA sequencing, and confirmation of animal phenotype were performed.

Acrylamide is a common environmental volatile organic compound that humans are frequently exposed to in their daily lives. However, whether exposure to acrylamide is associated with long-term survival in patients with hyperglycemia remains largely unknown.

A total of 3,601 hyperglycemic people were recruited in this study, including 1,247 people with diabetes and 2,354 people with pre-diabetes, who enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey (2003-2004, 2005-2006, and 2013-2014). The acrylamide exposure was measured by the serum hemoglobin adduct of acrylamide (HbAA) and glycidamide (HbGA), and the ratio of HbAA and HbGA (HbAA/HbGA) was calculated, which were all categorized into quintiles. The National Death Index was used to identify the participants' death information until 2015. Cox proportional hazards (CPHs) regression models were performed to examine the survival relationship between these biomarkers and mortality. During the 28,652 person-year follow-up, 268 deaths due to the cardiovascular disease (CVD) were documented. After adjustment for multiple confounders, compared with participants in the lowest quintile of HbAA/HbGA, the participants in the highest quintile were more likely to die due to CVD (hazard ratio [
] = 1.61, 95%
1.09-2.39) and all-cause (
= 1.59, 95%
1.25-2.01). Moreover, subgroup analysis showed that the highest quintile of HbAA/HbGA in the people with diabetes or pre-diabetes was related to mortalities risk of CVD (

Models to study the epicardium of large animals in vitro are limited and mainly based on epicardial cell isolation/differentiation from stem cells, followed by 2D cells culture. In this method paper, we describe the procedure to obtain and culture 3D organotypic heart slices presenting an intact epicardium, as a novel model to study the epicardial physiology and activation. Epicardial slices are obtained from porcine hearts using a high-precision vibratome and retain a healthy epicardial layer embedded in its native extracellular environment and connected with other cardiac cells (cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, vascular cells etc.). Epicardial slices can be cultured for 72 h, providing an ideal model for studying the epicardium physiology or perform pharmacological interventions/gene therapy approaches. We also report on methods to assesses the viability and composition of the epicardial slices, and evaluate their architecture in 3D through tissue decoloration. Finally, we present a potential application for a nanomaterial-based gene transfer method for tracking of epicardial cells within the slice. Crucially, given the similarity in morphology and physiology of porcine heart with its human counterpart, our system provides a platform for translational research while providing a clinically relevant and ethical alternative to the use of small animals in this type of research.
The high mortality and morbidity rates in surgical aortic arch repair are a barrier to therapy for a considerable proportion of patients with aortic arch aneurysm or dissection. There is hence a demand for the development and adoption of a minimally invasive alternative to aortic arch repair, such as thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). Procedural duration is a key factor in the pathogenesis of complications in surgical aortic arch repair. Herein, we evaluate whether endovascular duration impacts neurological outcomes, target vessel patency, and reintervention rates in aortic arch TEVAR with RELAY™ Branched (Terumo Aortic, Inchinnan, UK), which is specifically developed for on-label use within the aortic arch.

Prospective data was collected between January 2019 and January 2022 on the clinical outcomes of TEVAR for aortic arch dissection and aneurysm with RELAY™ single-, double-, and triple branched endoprostheses from centers across Europe. They were then retrospectively analyzed with descriptive and distributive analysis.
