In recent years, copper redox mediators have attracted growing interest in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). However, experiments revealed that ubiquitously used Lewis-base additives in the electrolytes coordinate to the CuII species, which restricts further enhancement of device performance and stability. We report the application of copper complexes endowed with diamine-tripyridine pentadentate ligands, [Cu(tpe)]2+/+ (tpe=N-benzyl-N,N',N'-tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine) and [Cu(tme)]2+/+ (tme=N-benzyl-N,N',N'-tris(6-methylpyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine), as redox mediators in DSCs. Experimental measurements demonstrate that the coordination environment of Cu(II) complexes with pentadentate ligands remains unchanged in the presence of TBP, which is in stark contrast to the state-of-the-art bipyridyl counterpart. DSCs based on [Cu(tme)]2+/+ complexes exhibit an excellent long-term stability and maintain more than 90 % of the initial efficiency after 400 h under continuous illumination, which outperform the reference devices incorporating the bipyridyl counterpart (less than 80 %) under identical conditions.
Chronic renal failure (CRF) referred to chronic progressive renal parenchymal damage caused by various causes, with metabolite retention and imbalance of water, electrolyte, and acid-base balance as the main clinical manifestations. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT) was a common complication in maintenance hemodialysis patients with CRF. Nuclear factor IB (NFIB) was a newly found tumor suppressor gene in various cancers. The present study aimed to illustrate the role of NFIB in sHPT clinical diagnosis and treatment response.

Serum NFIB was a highly accurate tool to identify sHPT from healthy controls and CRF patients. Due to its simplicity, specificity, and sensitivity, this candidate can be proposed as a first-line examination in the diagnostic workup in sHPT.2-O-Glucosylglycerol is accumulated by various bacteria and plants in response to environmental stress. It is widely applied as a bioactive moisturising ingredient in skin care products, for which it is manufactured via enzymatic glucosylation of glycerol by the sucrose phosphorylase from Leuconostoc mesenteroides. This industrial process is operated at room temperature due to the mediocre stability of the biocatalyst, often leading to microbial contamination. The highly thermostable sucrose phosphorylase from Bifidobacterium adolescentis could be a better alternative in that regard, but this enzyme is not fit for production of 2-O-glucosylglycerol due to its low regioselectivity and poor affinity for glycerol. In this work, the thermostable phosphorylase was engineered to alleviate these problems. Several engineering approaches were explored, ranging from site-directed mutagenesis to conventional, binary, iterative or combinatorial randomisation of the active site, resulting in the screening of ∼3,900 variants. Variant P134Q displayed a 21-fold increase in catalytic efficiency for glycerol, as well as a threefold improvement in regioselectivity towards the 2-position of the substrate, while retaining its activity for several days at elevated temperatures.A growing suite of research has demonstrated that nature-based shoreline stabilization methods can increase resilience of coastal ecosystems by improving their capacity to return to predisturbance states. Previous work suggests that during hurricanes, living shorelines promote vertical accretion and experience less damage than traditional shoreline stabilization alternatives. Nevertheless, there is limited research looking at the impacts of major storm events on living shorelines and most studies have investigated a small number of sites. This study used in situ real-time kinematic (RTK)-GPS surveys to quantify the resilience (via the lateral change in shore position) of 17 living shoreline sites before and after a Category 1 hurricane event (Hurricane Florence, 2018). Most monitoring efforts and toxicological studies are, however, limited to a few chemicals like benzophenone-3 (BP-3). In the present study, we chose other major organic UV filters, such as avobenzone (AVB), homosalate (HS), octisalate (OS), and octocrylene (OC), and reviewed information on their use, environmental occurrences, and endocrine disruption effects, available to date. Organic UV filters are used in high volume in many consumer applications, not only in sunscreen products but also in cosmetics, personal care products, home products, and food packaging. Environmental monitoring worldwide reveals that recreational coastal waters are among the hot spots of their contamination. An increasing number of experimental studies indicate that organic UV filters such as octinoxate (OMC), AVB, and HS may cause disruptions in sex hormones. Avobenzene and OMC can also influence thyroid function in experimental models. Observations in human population are rarely made, but OMC and OC have been associated with decreased androgenicity and increase of polycystic ovary syndrome, respectively. Further investigations are warranted to fill the knowledge gaps identified in the present study, to help develop relevant safety screening measures for organic UV filters. In this study, polymeric mechanoradicals were formed in situ under ball-milling conditions to undergo radical-radical coupling with a prefluorescent nitroxide-based reagent in order to incorporate a luminophore into the polymer main chains via a covalent bond. This method allowed the direct and conceptually simple preparation of luminescent polymeric materials from a wide range of generic polymers such as polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, and polyethylene. These results indicate that the present mechanoradical coupling strategy may help to transform existing commodity polymers into more valuable functional materials.In DNA aptamer selection, existing methods do not discriminate aptamer sequences based on their binding affinity and function and the reproducibility of the selection is often poor, even for the selection of well-known aptamers like those that bind the commonly used model protein thrombin. In the present study, a novel single-round selection method (SR-CE selection) was developed by combining capillary electrophoresis (CE) with next generation sequencing. selleck compound Using SR-CE selection, a successful semi-quantitative and semi-comprehensive aptamer selection for thrombin was demonstrated with high reproducibility for the first time. Selection rules based on dissociation equilibria and kinetics were devised to obtain families of analogous sequences. Thus, in this proof-of-concept report, we have demonstrated the potential of a "DNA Aptaomics" approach to systematically design functional aptamers as well as to obtain high affinity aptamers.This retrospective study evaluated the outcome of the endodontic treatment/retreatment of teeth with intraoral sinus tracts. Seventy-two teeth from 70 individuals were included. One operator treated all teeth over about 20 years. Time for the sinus tract to heal was recorded. Treatment outcome was evaluated after at least 1 year and classified as healed, healing or diseased. The overall healed rate of periradicular lesions was 73.6% (74.1% for treatment and 72.2% for retreatment). In 6 (8.3%) teeth, lesions were healing. Thirteen teeth (18.1%) exhibited persistent disease. In 68/72 (94.4%) cases, the sinus tract healed in less than 1 month. No preoperative/intraoperative variable affected the outcome (P > 0.05). Missing restorations had a negative impact (P less then 0.05). Healing of both the sinus tract quickly after treatment and the periradicular lesion later were usually achieved. Closure of the sinus tract in the first month was a good predictor of lesion healing.A reinforced tubular, medicated electrospun construct was developed for deep flexor tendon repair. This construct combines mechanical strength with the release of anti-inflammatory and anti-adhesion drugs. In this study, the reinforced construct was evaluated using a rabbit model. It was compared to its components (a tubular, medicated electrospun polymer without reinforcement and a tubular braid as such) on the one hand to a modified Kessler suture as a control group. Forty New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into two groups. Surgery was performed in the second and fourth deep flexor tendons of one hind paw of the rabbits in the two groups using four repair techniques. Biomechanical tensile testing and macroscopic and histological evaluations were performed at 3 and 8 weeks postoperatively. A two-way analysis of variance with pairwise comparisons revealed that the three experimental surgical techniques (a reinforced tubular medicated electrospun construct, tubular-medicated construct, and tubular braid as such) showed similar strength as that of a modified Kessler suture repair, which was characterized by a mean load at ultimate failure of 19.85 N (standard deviation [SD] 5.29 N) at 3 weeks and 18.15 N (SD 8.01 N) at 8 weeks. Macroscopically, a significantly different adhesion pattern was observed at the suture knots, either centrally or peripherally, depending on the technique. Histologically, a qualitative assessment showed good to excellent repair at the tendon repair site, irrespective of the applied technique. This study demonstrates that mechanical and biological repair strategies for flexor tendon repair can be successfully combined.Nurse-led counseling and systematic follow-up have been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk factor levels. The study aims were to investigate if cardiovascular risk factor levels could be reduced in patients with coronary artery disease with a nurse-led intervention and to report patients' evaluations of nurse-led counseling. The study design was a real-life longitudinal follow-up counseling intervention. Data were collected from November 2017 to May 2020. The nurse-led intervention and patients' follow-up time was 1 year. Of the 78 patients recruited, 74 completed the study. The most significant findings were in the levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides at every follow-up visit compared to their baseline levels and that waist circumference decreased during the 1-year follow-up. Patients assessed the quality of nurse-led counseling to be very good, though it decreased slightly during follow-up. The results suggest the integrated care path and specialized and primary care for coronary artery disease patients need further development.
