Recovery results agreed with the ones achieved using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. The early diagnosis of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) requires either an accurate detection of genetic material or a sensitive detection of viral proteins. In this work, we designed an immunoassay platform for detecting trace levels of SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein. It is based on surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) of methylene blue (MB) adsorbed onto spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and coated with a 6 nm silica shell. The latter shell in the SERRS nanoprobe prevented aggregation and permitted functionalization with SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Specificity of the immunoassay was achieved by combining this functionalization with antibody immobilization on the cover slides that served as the platform support. Different concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 antigen could be distinguished and the lack of influence of interferents was confirmed by treating SERRS data with the multidimensional projection technique Sammon's mapping. With SERRS using a laser line at 633 nm, the lowest concentration of spike protein detected was 10 pg/mL, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.046 ng/mL (0.60 pM). This value is comparable to the lowest concentrations in the plasma of COVID-19 patients at the onset of symptoms, thus indicating that the SERRS immunoassay platform may be employed for early diagnosis.Edible seaweed has been widely consumed around the world through oriental cuisine and it is important to monitor the levels of some elements, especially halogens. This study proposes, for the first time, the development of an analytical method using the vortex-assisted matrix solid-phase dispersion (VA-MSPD) combined with alkaline extraction of halogens (F, Cl, Br, and I) in edible seaweed for further determination by ion chromatography. The proposed method was evaluated using edible seaweed of the Nori (Porphyra spp.) type and applied to samples of the Wakame (Undaria pinnatifida), Kombu (Laminaria ochroleuca), and Hijiki (Hizikia fusiformis) types. Important VA-MSPD parameters were investigated and using 0.1 g sample, 1 g sea sand as solid support, 50 mmol L-1 (NH4)2CO3 as extraction solution, and 5 min of maceration, higher extraction efficiencies were obtained. The method was linear within the evaluated range (R2 > 0.99) for all elements and no matrix effect was observed. The detection limits of the method were 27, 26, 19, and 28 μg g-1 for F, Cl, Br, and I, respectively. The accuracy was evaluated by a recovery test (ranging from 92 to 108%) and analysis of certified reference materials for apple leaves (NIST 1515) and peach leaves (NIST 1547), which had a good agreement (ranging from 97 to 101%) with the certified values. Comparing the results with those obtained by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry after microwave-induced combustion, no significant difference was found between the results, and the relative standard deviations were lower than 12%. The proposed method proved to be efficient for the determination of halogens in different algae species, showing advantages such as simplicity and low cost, combined to the use of a material from renewable sources (sea sand) as a solid support, contributing to the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry. In this study, we developed organelle-specific blue-emitting two-photon (TP) probes for Ca2+ (BCa-1, BCa-2mito, and BCa-3mem), with absorption maxima (λmax) at 350-358 nm, emission maxima (λfl) at 464-466 nm, and TP action cross-section (Φδmax) values of 55-70 × 10-50 cm4s/photon, in the presence of excess Ca2+ at 750 nm. Moreover, the probes had dissociation constants of 0.18, 2.7, and 100 μM, respectively, which are appropriate values for sensing Ca2+ in the cytoplasm, mitochondria, and plasma membrane, respectively. The measurements were conducted using a calcium calibration buffer (10 mM 3-[N-morpholino]propanesulfonic acid and 100 mM KCl) at pH 7.2. The TP microscopy results revealed that the probes could facilitate the real-time detection of Ca2+ in the cytoplasm, mitochondria, and plasma membranes of live cells and tissues. Additionally, we developed a green-emitting TP probe for H+ (FHEt-1lyso) with λmax = 359 nm, λfl = 571 nm, and Φδmax = 70 × 10-50 cm4s/photon at pH 4.3 in a universal buffer (0.1 M citric acid, 0.1 M KH2PO4, 0.1 M Na2B4O7, 0.1 M tris[hydroxymethyl]aminomethane, and 0.1 M KCl); this probe could detect H+ in the lysosomes. Using BCa-1 and FHEt-1lyso, it was possible to simultaneously monitor the changes in cytosolic Ca2+ and lysosomal H+ concentrations in live cells and tissues using dual-color TP microscopy in real time. When used with TP probes emitting wavelengths of green light or longer, these blue-emitting Ca2+ probes can be used to investigate the physiological role of Ca2+ in cellular organelles as well as the crosstalk between Ca2+ and other metal ions in specific organelles. The aim of this study is to describe whether Bipolar Disorder (BD) with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) comorbidity is associated with an increased cognitive impairment as compared to BD without SUD comorbidity. This is a systematic review. The literature search was conducted in three databases PubMed, PsycINFO and Embase. A total of 2032 studies were screened after removing duplicates. 29 articles were included for full text screening, and a total of 14 articles were included in the systematic review. Multiple cognitive domains were assessed, including verbal, spatial and visual memory, and psychomotor and executive functioning. Over half the articles (64.3%, n=9) identified cognitive impairments in individuals with BD+SUD comorbidity as compared to individuals with BD without SUD comorbidity. In addition, individuals with the comorbidity exhibited more severe impairments on tests of executive functioning, and greater impairments in verbal and visual memory. The studies included in this systematic review reinforce that individual with comorbidity of BD and SUD have increased cognitive impairment as compared to individuals with BD without SUD comorbidity. Executive functioning was the most impaired cognitive domain found across the studies included in this review. Intervention strategies focused on executive functioning would be beneficial for this specific population.Although varicella zoster virus (VZV) disease is a common complication after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), research into the long-term incidence of VZV disease in adults receiving cord blood transplantation (CBT) has been limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence, risk factors, and clinical impact of VZV disease after CBT with long-term follow-up in our institution. We retrospectively analyzed the data for 156 adult patients who received single-unit CBT at our institution between 2007 and 2020 and who achieved neutrophil engraftment and survived at least 100 days without recurrence of the underlying disease. VZV disease occurred in 61 patients at a median of 608 days (range, 36 to 4090 days) after CBT. The cumulative incidence of VZV disease was 14% (95% confidence interval [CI], 9% to 20%) at 1 year post-CBT and 40% (95% CI, 31% to 48%) at 5 years post-CBT. Multivariate analysis identified the cessation of antiviral prophylaxis as an independent risk factor forremained high after the cessation of antiviral prophylaxis, additional interventions, such as recombinant zoster vaccine administration, could be required to prevent VZV disease in long-term adult survivors after CBT.
Serious games are a promising means of fostering socio-emotional skills in children on the autism spectrum (AS). However, empathy and related constructs have not yet been addressed comprehensively and together with emotion recognition, and there is a lack of randomized controlled trials (RCT) to investigate skill maintenance and the transfer to functional behavior.

The manualized, parent-assisted serious game Zirkus Empathico (ZE) was tested against an active control group, in a six-week multicenter RCT. Eighty-two children aged 5-10 years on the AS were assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and three-month follow-up. Empathy and emotion recognition skills were defined as the primary outcomes. Thioflavine S supplier The secondary outcomes included measures of emotional awareness, emotion regulation, autism social symptomatology (Social Responsiveness Scale), and subjective therapy goals.

Training effects were observed after the intervention for empathy (d=0.71) and emotion recognition (d=0.50), but not at follow-up. Moderate effects on emotional awareness, emotion regulation, and autism social symptomatology were indicated by the short and mid-term assessments. Parents reported treatment goal attainment and positive training transfer.

While a six-week training with ZE failed to induce lasting changes in empathy and emotion recognition, it may be effective for improving emotional awareness and emotion regulation, and mitigate general autism symptomatology.

When the R wave of a PVC coincides in time with the T wave of the previous beat, this timing can lead to unidirectional block and initiation of reentry, known as the R-on-T phenomenon. Classically, the PVC triggering reentry has been viewed as arising focally from 1 region and propagating into another region whose recovery is delayed, resulting in unidirectional conduction block and reentry initiation. However, more recent evidence indicates that PVCs also can arise from the T wave itself. In the latter case, the PVC initiating reentry is not a separate event from the T wave but rather is causally generated from the repolarization gradient that manifests as the T wave. We call the former an "R-to-T" mechanism and the latter an "R-from-T" mechanism, which are initiation mechanisms distinct from each other. Both are important components of the R-on-T phenomenon and need to be taken into account when designing antiarrhythmic strategies. Strategies targeting suppression of triggers alone or vulnerable substrate alone may be appropriate in some instances but not in others. Preventing R-from-T arrhythmias requires suppressing the underlying dynamic tissue instabilities responsible for producing both triggers and substrate vulnerability simultaneously. The same principles are likely to apply to supraventricular arrhythmias.
