PURPOSE In this paper, we report two rare cases of sudden death due to giant left ventricular thrombus revealed at autopsy and we discuss the manner and the cause of death. RESULTS Cases presentation The two cases reported are about two men aged 55 and 53 years respectively. In the two cases, no past cardiac history was found. Prior to the onset of complications and subsequent death, both patients presented to the emergency department with progressing asthenia, faintness and shortness of breath, were treated symptomatically. At autopsy, atherosclerosis of coronary arteries was found. In the first case, death was attributed to thrombosis of the pseudoaneurysm. In the second case, it was due to thrombosis complicating a myocardial infarction. The mechanism of death in the first case was explained by the hemodynamic shock caused by a total left ventricular pseudoaneurysm thrombosis secondary to old myocardial infraction. In the second case, death was the consequence of a cardiogenic shock secondary to thrombosis of the cardiac pseudoaneurysm complicating a myocardial infraction. CONCLUSION Complications of myocardial infarction represent frequent causes of adult sudden death. Left ventricular thrombosis is a complication that is often fatal and its discovery during an autopsy remains rare. The first-line doctor must take these types of complications into consideration in order to detect them and thus ensure timely management. This review assesses the use of point-of-care testing (POCT) in establishing a cause of death in the autopsy setting. A search was performed of the PubMed, Medline, Embase, ScienceDirect and Scopus databases using the terms point-of-care, autopsy, post-mortem, cause of death and forensics. This search revealed some evidence for the efficacy of POCT for autopsy derived samples in the detection of viruses, sepsis and abnormal glucose levels. Other potential applications for forensic POCT include drug abuse screening, detection of alcoholic and diabetic acidoketosis and carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition to standard, objective and scientific evaluation of the evidence of liability for the medical malpractice claims by the experts, it is aimed to create an algorithm that will facilitate the evaluation by the judicial authorities. The aim of this research is to provide minimum common denominator which will be the standard approach model for the experts in the evaluation of medical malpractice claims. The Delphi method was used as a tool for the panelists to express their opinions freely without being under the influence of each other and to reveal different ideas. The research conducted with 11 panelists consist of forensic medicine experts, clinicians, and a lawyer between January 2017 and September 2017. This research will impact the forensic science and law community by serving the evaluations of the experts in medical malpractice claims whether evaluations are based on methodological and logical considerations and the scientific validity of the evaluations is objective or not. Plastic bag suffocation has been reported in cases of homicide, suicide, and accidental death, with an increase in numbers of suicide and accidental deaths. Though case reports are abundant, decomposition studies have not been performed. This study utilised 20 Sus scrofa domesticus to quantify the effect of a plastic bag covering the head on the rate and pattern of decomposition. A sample group of ten carcasses had plastic bags placed over the heads, with another ten carcasses acting as a control group, without a head covering. The carcasses were placed in an open field to decompose. Over the course of 52 days, data were collected bi-weekly on the rate and pattern of decomposition. The results show that a plastic bag covering the head of a carcass has an overall decreased effect on the rate of decomposition, compared to the control group. The decomposition pattern of head > trunk > limb in decreasing decomposition rate was not affected by the plastic bag; however, in comparison to the control group, the decomposition of the head and trunk regions differed significantly, while the limbs stayed unaffected. The heads of the sample group showed a decrease in decomposition rate, while the trunks showed an increase. BACKGROUND Previous studies show that reported suspects in adult rape cases often have a criminal record, and that many are rape recidivists. Annual numbers of police reported rapes have dramatically increased but the proportion of rapes being prosecuted and numbers of convictions are low. To increase knowledge about the suspects in cases of police reported rapes; whether they have committed the crime before or not may inform preventive measures. AIMS To compare suspect, victim, and assault related characteristics among different groups of police-reported rape suspects (first-time suspects, recidivist suspects and unidentified suspects). METHODS Retrospective, descriptive study of suspects in cases of rape or attempted rape reported by women ≥16 years of age in the Sør-Trøndelag police district, Norway, from 2003 to 2010. RESULTS Among the 356 suspects included, 207 (58%) were first-time suspects, 75 (21%) were recidivists and 74 (21%) were unidentified. Being a first-time suspect was significantly associated with victim being less then 18 years, recidivist suspect was significantly associated with victim being a partner, both suspect- and victim unemployment, and suspect reporting intake of other drugs than alcohol.
